Mintkit looked around nervously, it was almost sunset and that meant that her mother and siblings would be coming back soon, though it also meant that Springtail and her kits would be coming back in. She didn't mind her two toms; Aspenkit and Flamekit, they were pleasant if a bit rude. She was worried about her only daughter Emberkit, that had small ears, a twitching black nose, and an almost always lashing tail.

She didn't like how the small she-cat made her breath catch in her throat, being unable to tear her gaze from the playful spring green eyes that she inherited from her mother. She'd stand there frozen, wondering why she didn't act that way when she was talking to Springtail who had the same eyes, though somewhat less mesmerizing than Emberkit's.

She watched as her mother, Mossflight marched into the nursery with her enthusiastic sister, Thistlekit, and her whinny yet attentive brother, Lightkit. She saw the light brown fur of her mother and sister, with off-white creamy-yellow of her brother, blend as Mossflight settled down in her nest with her siblings complaining as they went. She was her mother shakes her head and repeat what she'd said before and watched the entrance, waiting for her littlest kit to come in, though little did she know that Mintkit was quietly sitting in the corner covered by the shadows behind her.

She held her breath as Springtail pranced into the den and over to her nest, clucking her tongue as she herded her kits into the nest. She felt flush under her fur when Emberkit dragged her paw over to the nest, ears flattened and mouth open and complaining. Springtail swiftly shushed her, motioning towards her now snoozing siblings and glazed-eyed mother.

She held her breath as she watched the kits curl up and fall asleep, exhaling with relief she stepped out of the shadows that had hidden her light grey coat well from the rest of the cats. Mintkit wandered back over to her nest with her snoozing siblings and mother, she curled beside her sister and closed her eyes, ignoring the slight kicking from her siblings as she drifted off to sleep.

What felt like seconds she opened her eyes again but awoke because of a voice that was talking to her. She shot her head up and whipped it around to face a pair of spring green eyes, small ears, and a tail excitedly lashing back and forth quietly. Mintkit began to panic, her ears flattened ever so slightly and her fur rose as she held her breath, not trusting herself to make the first words.

"I couldn't sleep, I'm too excited! Yesterday I found this really cool thing and I've been dying to show someone, and I obviously can't tell a tom, with their big mouths the secret will be out!" Emberkit gushed, jumping up and down not so quietly as she waited for Mintkit to process the information. She opened her mouth then closed it, Why would she want to tell me this? Why not Thistlekit?

"Um, why didn't you wake up Thistlekit instead of me? She wouldn't spill your secret either? Not to be rude or anything, just wondering..." She stammered out and looked at her white paws nervously. Of course, that's rude! She'll think that I don't want to be her friend! You should've just agreed and followed her! But, she couldn't seem to say any of her thoughts or apologies.

"Thistlekit is almost as bad as a tom, no offense. Plus, you nice!" Emberkit laughed to Mintkit's relief, bouncing over to the entrance of the nursery. Mintkit stood up and unwinded herself from her family and hurried forwards to the playful kit that kept her on her paws. Emberkit winked at her and took off out of the den, Mintkit raced after her not thinking about the guards that kept watch.

Emberkit's cream fur so much like her mother's flashed against the dark shadows, standing out while Mintkit's light grey fur matched and disappeared which was so unlike her family's brown and cream fur. Emberkit took a sharp turn to the dirt-place tunnel, Mintkit wrinkled her nose but followed anyways but almost collided into the she-cat because Emberkit had come to a stop.

"Wasn't that fun, we avoid the guards! Now where almost there, no more obstacles!" Emberkit squealed, Mintkit snorted, Sure, that was fun as is going through the dirt-place! "Not over their silly! There's only one way to go and it's up!" Emberkit cried as Mintkit started to make her way towards the dirt-place. Mintkit whirled around, surprised and just in time to see Emberkit launch herself onto the tree and begin to scramble up like a squirrel.

Mintkit raced to the base of the tree, looking up at Emberkit nervously as the cream she-cat leaped from branch to branch like she was a bird without a fear of falling, or a danger of falling, which was not true in her case. Cautiously, Mintkit placed her claws lightly in the bark before pulling them out and shrugging, she launched herself up as high as she could and unsheathed her claws, landing about one more fox-length below the closest branch to the ground.

As quickly as she could without losing balance she unsheathed one of her forepaws and threw it ahead on her, then a hindleg, another forepaw, and the other hindleg until she made it up a bit. Pleased with herself she continued the process again and again each time a little faster until she found a smooth rhythm to help her scale the tree much faster than she'd been doing. Mintkit knew that the way she was doing it was horrible and there were much better ways to do it, but she didn't know them.

She eventually reached the branch where Emberkit had perched herself on smugly, Mintkit glared at her, daring to make fun of her climb to the branch, Emberkit rolled her eyes, turned around, and began to leap from tree branch to tree branch, even though they were high enough up all the limbs of the trees tangled together so she could just walk, so that's what Mintkit did, they contained that for a while until she came across Emberkit standing at the end of the tree line, where it gave away to open meadow as far as the eye could see and Mintkit lept up to join her.

Emberkit turned her head towards her, tilting it ever so slightly, her spring green eyes dancing with mischief, black nose quivering, white tipped-tail lashing, cream fur blowing in the wind, ears pricked attentively, as she looked over the meadow with one eye and the other watched Mintkit. She continued to walk towards the edge of the branch and turned her head back to Mintkit. "What, are you scared of the dark?" She laughed, winking.
