It made no sense, none of this did... He remembered everything, every kill, every painful agonizing second he endured as the winter solider... His life before the war, his childhood... He remembered it all and yet she was just a blur to him, a vague blur his scarred psyche had latched onto for survival... He knew that he knew her, she meant something to him, at this point he was not sure what but something nonetheless... Her words didn't make sense, how did he even know an Asgardian in the 40's? Thor was the first Asgardian he had ever come into contact with...
"Odindotter? As in a daughter of Odin? So Like what? Thors sister?" Sam interjected, it made Bucky snap back to reality, he was not alone here, for a moment he had forgotten they had an audience, he had been in his own bubble, a bubble of her and her alone. She seemed to feel it too, he watched her prickle in irritation at the interruption before turning to look at Sam. "Yes? He is my older brother, him and Loki, I am the youngest." She said matter of factly.
"If you are Thors sister how come he has never mentioned you? Or that we have never heard about you? "Sam interjected again.
This time Sigrid let out an annoyed huff before answering "because, until very recently I have been indisposed... So to speak..." She grumbled her eyes darting back to Bucky. Indisposed... Because of him? Had he done something as the winter solider that caused her harm? What harm could he have possibly cause the people of Asgard? He was strong but they were much much stronger... He still couldn't find words, damn it, why was his brain malfunctioning like this!
"Ok kids, lets head back to base and get properly acquainted there... There is a cherry blossom tea with my name on it waiting for me..." Zemo added not waiting for any one else's response he turned on his heels and began making his way back to the car.
"I do not like those little cars!" Sigrid exclaimed chasing up after him throwing her hands up in the air in exasperation. Sam quickly caught up with Bucky, his eyes were following her every move as she appeared to nag Zemo for his choice of vehicle. "So, care to fill in some of the blanks here?" He asked knocking Bucky from his trance.
He sighed "I have nothing to fill the blanks in with, I know her, I remember her face... Kind of... But for some reason she's a blur... Why can't I see her fully in my memories?" Bucky said through gritted teeth, his mind had been scrubbed clean so many times that he was certain it was the reason for this damage...The one person he had fixated on this entire time was practically a stranger to him, and he hated it.
Anxiety crawled up his spine as he climbed into the snug back seat next to her, their knees were practically touching, he was all but pressing himself against the door to give her as much space as possible, he was as rigid as a board and felt as wound up as a jack in the box toy. She must have been able to feel the tension rolling off him in waves because every few minutes she gave him a confused sideways glance before sighing and turning her attention back out her window. The entire ride back to Brooklyn was silent and awkward, he lost his ability to think with her around, how were they expected to have a conversation about anything if all he could do was stare at her like an idiot.
When the car finally parked up Bucky found his voice, but his words were not directed at Sigrid. "No! My apartment is not base, my apartment is my apartment!" He said pointing a finger angrily at Zemo. "Listen, James, we need to lay low, humor me." He smirked climbing from the car and strolling into his apartment building like he owned the place.
"I really hate that guy..." Sam said more to himself than anyone else and also climbed out. Painfully aware that there was just two of them left in the car Bucky all but jumped out, Sigrid followed suit but slower, more gracefully, she was very graceful... Every movement was the personification of elegance and poise, even when she was chewing Zemo out... She did it beautifully.
She stood to the side, face still confused as she watched his every move, following him up to the apartment Sam and Zemo had already let themselves in "how the hell did you get inside, did you break my door?!"
"Of course not James, I have a key." Zemo said flashing another smile as he brandished the silver key like a trophy.
Sigrid looked around the apartment her brow furrowed "did you only move in?"
He winced, his apartment had very little in it, he needed very little, heck, if he could get rid of the bed and the couch he would...
"Uh, no, just haven't had time to... decorate..."
Her eyes narrowed, she looked at him now with new intention... "I have had enough of this weird nonsense." She marched over to Bucky and grabbing him by the wrist she all but dragged him to the bathroom. When her skin touched his it felt like electricity, his skin tingled, his heart jumped... What the hell was this... He let her drag him along willingly until they were situated inside the bathroom with the door shut firmly behind them.
She turned on her heels to look at him, she didn't look confused now, she looked angry... Furious even...
"I am somewhat offended that you have managed to remember every facet of your life except me, you even remembered to move back to Brooklyn but me? OH no, not me that would be too much damned trouble!" She exclaimed. He was at a loss, what could he say? Sorry? Something told him that would only make her angrier again.
"If you can't remember me on your own I will make you remember." She said with conviction. In an instant her hands were on either side of his head, in an instant he saw nothing but darkness, then a burst of brilliant light, his mind played like a movie reel of his life, stopping on his days as a soldier, when he first enlisted, when he was simply Bucky, Steve's friend... But there she was too... In a woman's army uniform standing next to him.
"I'm worried about Steve, he isn't cut out for this... What if he gets hurt?" He was saying to her. She smiled wistfully "trust me, you do not need to worry about Steve..."
Another flashback appeared, this time they were arguing... shouting and screaming at each other.
"Don't be so stupid Siggy! You could have gotten yourself killed what were you thinking!"
"You do not control what I do Jimmy I am trying to keep you safe, I am trying to keep you all safe you have no idea the sacrifices I have made to try and keep you out of harms way!"
Then they weren't shouting, they were kissing, kissing like they were the last life line for each other, like nothing else mattered... Then it all came flooding back...
He had met her his first day, there weren't many women enlisted but she stood out, he had been somewhat of a womanizer at that time, he had a string of girls he could call on at any time, but the moment he laid eyes on her he forgot the other girls. She showed him little interest at first, she humored him, they talked a lot, he had never met someone from Norway before, or at least, that's where she told him she was from at the time. When she put herself in any kind of danger in the field he saw red, he never had such strong feelings towards another person, he confided in Steve and told him as much...
"Bucky Barnes, could this be love?" He had teased him.
When he was first... Apprehended and later reunited with her she knew something was wrong, that is when she told him, told him everything.
"You are going to think I am insane but it's true I swear to you. I am from a place called Asgard, I am a child of the god Odin, I just prefer this world, we call it Midgard where I am from, there is so much more I need to tell you but Jimmy, we need to get you out of here, away from this place and away from these people, please... Come with me, I will take you to my home, my real home, we can fix everything there!"
But he wouldn't go, the serum had already been injected into his veins, he was already becoming the winter soldier... But her insistence soon turned into something else, acceptance, like she knew a chain of events were starting she could not change.
Before they could argue once more about his safety they were surrounded, surrounded by some of the largest men Bucky had ever seen, he didn't even need to ask her, surely these were the people she was talking about, her people, they looked human but inhuman all at once, they were giants compared to the men on the field... They looked like Gods, he had no choice but to believe her then...
Her eyes narrowed at them as they approached her, they looked weary to have to lay a hand upon her but they knew they had to.
"He cannot even come down here and get me himself? He sends his lackeys to send his child to a lifetime of suffering, the cowardice." She said nonchalantly.
She looked back to Bucky one more time, hands placed on either side of his head she kissed him for what she thought would be last time she would ever kiss him again.
"Stay strong Sergeant Barnes, and don't you dare forget me. I'll be coming back for you."
She whispered softly against his lips. Before he could respond, before he could even attack, a man had taken each arm and they had disappeared in a flash of Technicolor, and then she was gone, gone before Bucky had a chance to even ask her why, before he even had a chance to stop them, the super soldier serum was already working its way through his blood stream, dulling his senses, turning him into the killing machine he would become for the next 90 years. All that remained was some runic writing burned into the ground where they once stood, that was the first time Bucky had felt it, he remembered now, that emptiness, that hollow feeling... It crept inside him that day and burrowed into his very core where it had remained ever since.
Another flash appeared, this time in a cave, or an underground area, he couldn't see but he could hear, hear screams of agony... It smelled of damp and decay, it looked like a place animals would go to die but those screams, they were not the screams of someone near death, he knew those screams all too well... It was the sounds of someone enduring torture...
That's when Sigrid pulled her hands away and brought him back to the now. He looked at her this time differently, he looked at her like he knew her, really knew her. He didn't know if he should laugh or cry or punch a hole in the wall. The only woman he ever wanted to be his girl, the one he used to imagine having a white picket fence and 2.5 kids with, he had imagined his entire life with her before everything fell apart and now they were back together, but they were not the same... Time had been unkind to both of them he knew that, he had been robbed of a happy life, again.
He lifted his hand to touch her face, his real hand, hesitantly, he reached out, almost concerned when he touched her she would turn into mist and disappear. When his hand finally reached her cheek he let out a breath he didn't know he was holding in. She was real.
A look of relief washed over her own face at the contact. She glanced down at his vibranium arm, her hands reached out and grabbed his hand, he never let people touch his arm, it had been used to do too much damage, too much killing. "I tried to save you from all this, all this damage, all this hurt, but you wouldn't come with me. I saw it coming... I knew what was going to happen..." She looked back at him her eyes sad once more.
"Siggy..." Saying her name, saying it now made him feel something, something in his very core. He couldn't find the words to describe everything he was feeling inside at that moment so he didn't, words would never be enough... Instead he leaned down his forehead pressed against hers, this was the most contact he had with another person that wasn't violent in decades. His eyes fell shut, his hand refusing to move from her face they stayed like that, frozen in a moment of pure silence, it was the first time his mind had been quiet in a very long time... "I should have gone with you." He finally said, opening his eyes he glanced down at her mouth. A small smile was curved on her plump rose tinted lips, a smile that said that's all she had wanted to hear from him. The small gap that was between them was quickly closing, her hands went up to rest on his chest, her long pale fingers curling around the front of his jacket to pull him in.
He was going to ask permission, that's what a gentleman should always do before kissing a lady but it seemed with her he didn't need to ask. Their lips were so close together he could feel her breath wash over him, that's when a loud bang on the bathroom door made them both jump out of their skin.
"I don't know if you are killing each other or doing the other thing in there but time is of the essence here so can you move it along!" Zemo called through the door. Bucky's jaw ticked, he wanted to put his arm through the door and drag Zemo through it but it made Sigrid laugh lightly.
"We never could get a moment alone." She said in amusement, letting go of his jacket she took a step back, he immediately felt the loss of no longer having her near him. He wanted to reach out and pull her back in. He never wanted her more than an arms length away from him again.
"I did not particularly want our reunion to be in a tiny bathroom in Brooklyn but, as long as you remember me I cannot really complain."
Bucky smiled at this, his first genuine smile in years "oh I wouldn't worry, I don't think I will be forgetting you again anytime soon, doll." He smirked.
She prickled at this "I hate it when you call me that."
"I know."
He opened the bathroom door suddenly feeling lighter, he still had those dark feelings, the anxiety, the guilt, but he also had her, his walking talking salvation.
"I don't know what Zemos rush is, the sooner we get these super soldiers under control the sooner he goes back to prison." Bucky frowned. Sigrid looked slightly anxious now, her brow was furrowed slightly as she looked up at him.
"He will be wanting to go through my files I would imagine that is the rush..."
"Your files?"
"Yes, my files SHIELD had on me, and where they found me... And why they found me in the condition I was in..."
This made him stop dead in his tracks.
"The condition you were in?"
"Please do not be upset, this wasn't your fault it was my pig headed fathers."
"Why would I be upset, what aren't you telling me?"
"SHIELD, they found me, in caves in Norway, I was being held there, that is where I have been the last 90 years... They put me there, well, they put me there for being with you... They put me there so I wouldn't go back to you."
