Chapter 4
Tokoyami spent the rest of the day on patrol. He felt rejuvenated, a smile occasionally forming on his face. The events from last night were still fresh in his mind. It all happened so quickly and unexpectedly, yet he wouldn't have had it gone any other way. It felt a little immature perhaps. And there were still issues on his mind. He waited for Momo to reach out to him, checking his phone throughout the rest of the day.
Finally, at lunch time, he got a text while sitting atop a building. He checked the screen.
Unknown: Hey. It's Momo.
Fumikage's heart beated faster. He added her as a contact and texted back,
Tokoyami: You said we had a lot more to talk about.
Momo: I did. How are you feeling?
Tokoyami: Better than I have in a while.
Momo: Same here. I'm glad we're talking. Do you want to go to the park tomorrow? Maybe a coffee shop?
Tokoyami: Both of those sound delightful. Whichever you prefer.
Yaoyorozu worked on her next text for a while
Momo: What did you make of last night?
Tokoyami took his time to respond.
Tokoyami: I will be honest with you. I very much enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind trying again.
Momo: Wouldn't mind, or really want to?
He chuckled at that.
Tokoyami: That's a good question.
Momo: I'm not trying to push you. It's all very sudden. I just want to know.
Tokoyami sighed as he sorted out his feelings. He could hear Dark Shadow encouraging him.
Tokoyami: No, it is alright. I really want to. What about you?
Another delayed response.
Momo: Yes, I do too.
Fumikage didn't know what else to say. He expected that, but it was a strange situation to approach. He replied,
Tokoyami: The truth is, I'm not sure if this is a coping mechanism or not. If I'm just trying to get over my previous breakup. One way or the other, I don't wanna turn you into a crutch. That is my only fear going forward.
It was the most honest thing he could express. She responded,
Momo: I know what you mean. The same thing has bothered me. I guess it isn't so bad if we're both aware of that, right? If we know what we're getting ourselves into and why, then it can't be that dangerous.
Tokoyami: Just because you know a dark abyss is full of monsters doesn't mean you should transverse it.
Momo: That's true. But what if there's something in there you want? Is the risk worth it?
Tokoyami took a deep breath.
Tokoyami: Yes, I think it is. It may be a mistake, but I want this.
Momo: I do too. Let's keep it a secret for now. I'm tired of seeing myself in the tabloids.
Tokoyami: Understandable. When do you want to try again?
Momo: Next week. I'm busy the rest of this week. And I want to do it at my place. There's something I wanna show you. Something I think you'll like.
Tokoyami felt his excitement build.
Tokoyami: Oh? What might that be?
Momo: We'll talk about it more when the day is close. And in person. I don't think it's good to talk about it over text.
Fumikage hummed and nodded. He checked his clock and saw the time.
Tokoyami: Alright, if that's what you think. Sorry to cut this short, but I have to get back to patrol.
Momo: I do too. Coffee shop tomorrow?
Tokoyami: Absolutely. Send me a time.
Momo: I will. Talk to you later, Tsukuyomi.
She sent a winky emoji. Tokoyami blushed as he put his phone away and went back to his patrol. A couple hours later, he gave Shouji a call, asking if he wanted to go to the gym together in the morning. His old friend gladly agreed.
"I'm so happy you called me Fumikage," Shouji said as Tokoyami watched the city below, "I was starting to get worried."
"I know. I'm sorry I avoided your calls," Fumikage answered in a guilty tone, "I shouldn't have put you through that."
"I was actually about to call again today. I read about the attack. The Rock Master?"
"Indeed," Tokoyami chuckled, "Quite the original name, huh?"
"Villains aren't as creative as they used to be. I saw Yaoyorozu was there too."
Tokoyami swallowed hard.
"Yeah, we worked together to take the fiend down," he answered casually, "The others were hurt, but they'll recover."
"That must've been exciting, working with a Class-A member. Especially one so talented."
"It was a...rewarding experience."
There was an awkward pause between them. Shouji finally asked,
"You're feeling better?"
"I think so," Fumikage sighed, "for now at least. I've been in a dark place."
"I can imagine. You and Asui were close."
Fumikage let out a short grunt, remembering what Momo told him.
Talk to others. I know it helped me, if only a little.
"It feels like I've been navigating a hurricane in the night," Fumikage said, "It's hard. It's...really hard. I didn't see it coming one bit. I was blind and foolish."
"Hey, don't be too hard on yourself. You've got enough struggle as it is."
"I guess I've just always done that," he sighed, "It helped me pull through difficulties in the past. Overcome great mountains. Work my way to success. But this is just something I can't fix. I think that might be why it feels so unbearable."
"I can understand that. Maybe it'd help if you started seeing a counselor."
Fumikage hummed at that. He hadn't really considered that option, though it wasn't a bad idea.
"I'll think about it."
"Please do," Shouji pleaded, "Despite your words, you sound more cheerful than when I last saw you. What lifted your spirits?"
Tokoyami grabbed his choker and twisted it around.
"We'll talk more about it tomorrow," he cleared his throat.
"If you say so. Listen, I have to cut this early. If there's anything you need, I'm a call away."
"Thank you, Shouji."
The line hung up. Fumikage considered calling Hawks next, but thought better of it. His old mentor was probably busy, and he didn't want to interrupt. Instead, he just left a text.
Tokoyami: It's Fumikage. Call me when you get the chance.
Not much else happened for the rest of the day. No major villain attacks, at least not near him. He headed back home. When he got back to the apartment, he dressed down for the evening. He made some tea and sat down on the couch, flipping on the television. While he did so, he felt his phone buzz. He fully expected it to be Hawks. Instead, it was someone else.
Momo: Hey there.
Fumikage was surprised, but pleasantly so.
Tokoyami: Good evening.
Momo: How was your day?
They talked about general things, flipping back and forth while a nightly herotalk show played in the background. Fumikage sipped his tea along the way. The casual tone of their conversation flipped immediately when Momo texted,
Momo: I miss you tonight.
Tokoyami huffed and smiled as he responded.
Tokoyami: Is that so?
Her next text was a picture. She was lying down in bed with a green t-shirt on, hair disheveled. It was taken from a vertical ninety degree angle. Her eyes were tired, but she smiled. The text read,
Momo: Bed's empty.
Tokoyami: You look pretty.
Momo: Thanks. Though I'm not really trying.
Fumikage felt bold. He hadn't felt this bold in a while. She looked gorgeous.
Tokoyami: I'm more curious about what's underneath that green fabric.
He didn't know what to expect. Her next pic was her shirtless in a black bra. She struck a seductive pose, grinning proactively. Tokoyami felt himself grow hard.
Momo: You mean like this?
Tokoyami: Exactly like that. Now what about the black fabric?
Momo: Nope, that's all you get tonight, Bird Boy. Don't be greedy.
For some reason, that just further turned him on. In fact, her withholding did way more than if she kept exposing herself. He rubbed his growing bulge through his pants as he texted back,
Tokoyami: You're really getting into my head right now.
Momo: Do you like that?
Tokoyami: It's like you've casted a dark spell on me. Your words are the poetry of the night, and I'm caught in it's seductive grasp.
Momo: You're fun to play with. I figured that out last night.
Tokoyami: What else did you figure out?
Momo: Not a lot. There's a lot left to learn.
Tokoyami found the willpower to stop touching himself. He heard Dark Shadow whine from within, urging him to keep going.
Tokoyami: Well, it's been fun, but I've got to get some sleep. Goodnight, Yaoyorozu.
Momo: See you at the coffee shop, bird boy.
She sent him the location and time, and then when silent the rest of the night. Dark Shadow krept out of his chest.
"What was that all about?" Dark Shadow asked in a distressed voice, "Tsuyu never talked like that."
"No, Momo's different," Tokoyami grinned.
He took a moment to stare at the pictures she sent. Dark Shadow cried,
"Come on, why don't we relieve it already!?"
"Patience," Tokoyami said, "this is something to be enjoyed like a fine wine. We just need to exercise a little self control."
"But you're horny…" he whined.
Fumikage put the phone away and turned off the television. He finished off his tea, which had gotten a bit cold. He turned and patted his quirk's head.
"You'll survive. Let's head to bed."
The next morning, Tokoyami got up bright and early and headed down to the gym. Fortunately, he and Shouji lived close to each other, so the flight wasn't bad. Shouji spotted his friend while he lifted a weighted bar lying down. Only a few other people were at the gym. They each wore some white practice shirts and black gym shorts. Tokoyami told him what happened while he finished his rep. Shouji looked mildly surprised.
"You're sure it wasn't the alcohol?" he asked.
"No, I made sure we weren't too drunk," Fumikage rested the bar back in place, and sat up, "Momo wants to keep it a secret for now. So don't share this with anyone.
"My lips are sealed," Shouji marked his finger across his mask, "Still though, it just doesn't seem like you to go and do something like that."
"It all happened so fast," Tokoyami grabbed a towel and wiped down his face, "I guess we both really wanted it."
"Sounds that way," Shouji nodded as they walked
to the next station, "Is this why your mood lifted?"
"Yes, and I decided to take advantage of that," they grabbed some dumbbells. Naturally, Shouji's were five times as large, "I don't know how long it will last. I'll see if I can find a therapist today."
"That's smart thinking. I'm glad you're being so rational about this. What does she have to say about it?"
Tokoyami shrugged.
"She's on board. Emotionally, I don't know how she's handling everything. We talked about not being too impulsive, and recognizing this may just be a coping mechanism. I trust her."
Shouji nodded.
"Well, she was always one of the more thoughtful students. You were too, for that matter. I think it can work out. Does this technically mean you're dating?"
Fumikage hummed as they set their weights down to rest and stretch their arms.
"I don't think so," Fumikage shook his head, "It's too early to say anything like that."
"So friends with benefits, then?"
Fumikage chuckled a little.
"Yeah. I think that's a fair way to put it."
"As long as you both know what it is," Shouji grunted as he stretched two arms upwards, and two more to the side, "I don't see why not."
Fumikage smiled at him.
"Thank you for being supportive."
They finished up their workout, showered, and got dressed in their costumes. They walked out together, just when more people were heading in. A few people stared and said hello, but nobody asked for autographs. They made it to the bus stop.
"Well, I guess this is where we part, old friend," Shouji said, reaching out a hand, "Good luck to both of you."
"Thank you for the time, Shouji." Fumikage shook it promptly.
Dark Shadow popped out and nuzzled the hero, cooing. Fumikage saw a smile under that mask as he pet the creature and wished them farewell.
Tokoyami flew off and soared above the buildings. A few hours later, he headed to the coffee shop, right around 10:00am. He changed out of costume, not wanting to be so easily recognized. Momo made the instructions very clear. Walk in after her, not together.
He stepped inside. Fortunately, the place wasn't terribly crowded. It had a main seating area, a register and kitchen on the left wall, another entrance on the right, and a large wall at the end filled with coffee bags, boxes of tea packets, to-go cups, and mugs. He immediately spotted a tall girl with a ponytail, green shirt, and skinny jeans. He walked up and stood next to her, not making eye contact.
"Just in time," she spoke silently.
"I wouldn't show up late to this," he replied under breath as he checked out one of the tea boxes, "how are you?"
"I'm fine. Order some coffee and meet me out back. Mine is coming out soon."
"Understood."
Sure enough, Momo's order number was called. She walked up to the register, thanked the server, and headed out. Fumikage went next, ordering some tea with a straw. It came out fast. He was out in a matter of minutes.
The two of them stood behind the building, backs rested up against the wall. Tokoyami sipped his beverage from a straw.
"Where is your suit?" he asked.
"Behind that dumpster," she pointed to a green double dumpster across the lot.
"What if someone spots it and tries to pinch it?"
"It has an auto defense system. Anyone trying to lift or open it besides me will get a warning, and then a broken arm."
"Ouch."
They sat in silence for a little bit. Fumikage enjoyed it nonetheless. The fact it was secret made it more exciting somehow, like a game.
"I'm gonna find a therapist today,"
Momo looked at him with a raised eyebrow
"You mean you didn't already have one?"
"Unfortunately, no. Shouji suggested it. I think it's a good idea."
Momo let out a frustrated sigh.
"Of course it is. In fact, it's a necessity."
"You're right," he stared down at his cup.
More silence. Momo scooted closer to him.
"I worry about you, Fumikage."
"Why's that?" he turned to her.
"I worry you don't take care of yourself very well."
He hummed and slid down the wall. She got down next to him.
"Maybe…becoming a hero has drawn too much attention away from myself and onto others," he wondered, "And when Asui left…that only exasperated the problem."
Momo smiled at that as she tapped her finger on her cup.
"Well, maybe you should give that more thought. I know a good therapist. I can text you their number." she glanced at him, "Perhaps you can discuss this with them."
"I think that's a good idea," he grinned back, "thank you Momo."
They readjusted themselves for a more comfortable sitting position.
"You remember our first battle against each other?" she asked.
"Never forget it," Fumikage chuckled.
She rubbed behind her head, playing with her ponytail.
"Well, I don't even think I'd call it a battle. You defeated me in less than thirty seconds. Afterwards, I had a hard time rediscovering my confidence. I pushed myself like hell. Did everything to get better and stronger."
"I never desired to break your confidence," he spoke apologetically.
"No…I think it was a good thing," she said, "It humbled me. Forced me to reevaluate my fighting style and strategy. Made me question my awareness."
She looked at him sincerely.
"You helped me grow. Thank you."
Fumikage blinked at her and finished his beverage.
"It was just a battle for me," he admitted, "but I had a similar scenario right after with Bakugou. I was fiercely reminded of my quirks weakness. I made efforts to compensate for it."
"Failure really is the best teacher,"
They finished off their drinks. Dark Shadow grabbed their empty cups, flew all the way to the dumpster, and flew right back in less than three seconds. Momo giggled.
"He never ceases to amaze me. Your quirk is incredible."
"I'm rather jealous of yours," he admitted, "The ability to create anything is a marvelous ability. You have a very special gift, Yaoyorozu."
She brushed her hair back at that. Tokoyami loved it when she did that. The two of them stood up together.
"I need to get going," she cleared her throat.
Fumikage grabbed her waist, and gently nuzzled her. She wrapped her hands around his neck and kissed his cheek. It was very soft and affectionate. They stepped back from each other.
"Park tomorrow?" Fumikage asked.
"Yes, but can we go at nighttime?"
"Of course, so long as we bring a light." he chuckled.
She winked at him.
"Seya around, Bird Boy."
With that, she walked off to the dumpster. Fumikage heard some mechanical noises, and waited to see her walk back out with her armor. He flew up into the air with Dark Shadow. She waved to him, and Dark Shadow waved back. They took off.
"Well, you're awfully quiet today," Tokoyami spoke to his quirk.
Dark Shadow didn't answer. Fumikage looked back at him.
"Come on. Say something already. Whine to me about being horny.
"I don't have too," Dark Shadow answered, "you're happy, after all."
Fumikage smiled at that. He looked forward.
"Let's go find some villains," he spoke confidently.
"Ayo!" Dark Shadow cheered.
