Back to the show!
Mary stood at the base of the stairs anxiously waiting for the boys to come down. After taking some time to let the dust settle, what with all the news about John moving out, she finally agreed with John that the boys should finally meet Adam. She wasn't at all happy about it but they seemed excited. Well, Sam at least seemed excited.
"Okay I'm ready!" Sam sang, running down the stairs.
"Brush your hair?" Mary asked. Sam nodded happily. "And your teeth?"
"Why do I need to brush my teeth if we're going to dinner?"
"Nice try but I can smell that breath from here."
Sam ran back up the stairs heading towards the bathroom, just in time for Dean to come running down in his sweats.
"What's wrong? Why aren't you ready? Your dad will be here any minute."
"I'm not going," Dean scoffed. He rolled his eyes and plopped down on the couch, instantly grabbing the remote.
Mary sat down next to him and gently took the remote from him.
"What's going on?" she asked gently. Dean scoffed and rolled his eyes again.
"Listen Dean," Mary said, trying again, "I'm sorry that you are taking this hard, but I think it would really mean a lot to your dad if you went tonight."
Dean twiddled his thumbs and didn't answer.
"Don't you want to meet Adam?"
"Why?" Dean snapped, looking up at his mom. Mary could see the wetness forming in his eyes and chose not to acknowledge it for Dean's sake.
"He is your little brother after all."
"No he's not! Sam's my little brother! I don't need another one!"
Mary sighed and put her hand on Dean's shoulder, causing him to relax instantly. She always had the magic touch to get him to calm down.
"Okay then. How about the two of us hang out tonight? Just like old times?"
"Can I go over to Tommy's?"
"Absolutely not."
"Why?"
"Because you're supposed to be at your father's tonight."
"That's so unfair!" Dean cried while standing up.
"Great comeback." Mary retorted sarcastically.
Dean groaned over dramatically and stomped back upstairs, his shoulder running into Sam and pushing him to the side on the way back down.
"Dean's mad again," Sam announced.
"I know he is," Mary sighed, walking back over towards the stairs.
John showed up, using his key to unlock the front door.
"Daddy!" Sam said, jumping into his arms. John picked him up and spun him around. Mary smiled at the sight. At least she still had her sweet baby Sam. Happiest kid in the world, even under these circumstances.
"You just have the one tonight," Mary said.
"He okay?" John asked, nodding towards upstairs and setting Sam back on the floor. He locked eyes with Mary and they had one of their silent parenting conversations.
Remember when Dean was the easy child? Now he's a very angry teenager.
He's still pissed at us?
Oh he's pissed at a lot of things, not just us.
He'll get over it.
"Why are you two staring at each other?" Sam asked innocently.
"God, you are just observant tonight aren't you?" Mary teased, reaching forward to tickle him on his sides.
"Mommy!" Sam screamed, laughing so hard he couldn't breathe. "Stop it!"
She did and blew a raspberry in his hair, kissing his forehead and sending him out with John.
Sam buzzed up and down in the backseat the entire way to Kate and Adam's. John couldn't help but watch him in the rear view mirror.
"Hey Dad?"
"Yeah bud?"
"What's Adam like?"
"Honestly, he kind of reminds me of you. He's smart, and funny, and he loves playing with legos."
Sam gasped with excitement. "I like legos! Maybe we can build something together!"
John laughed. "Yeah, maybe."
Sam buzzed even harder. Having a little brother didn't sound so scary.
John pulled up in the driveway and the two got out of the car. Taking Sam's hand, he led him up the porch steps to the front door, letting Sam ring the doorbell. A woman answered the door, who Sam automatically assumed was Kate.
"Hi! My name's Kate! Are you Dean or Sam?"
Sam immediately felt shy and hid behind his father.
"This is Sam," John said, speaking for him. "Dean wasn't feeling well."
A little kid ran up behind Kate and wrapped his arms around her leg.
"Adam," Kate said, bending down to pick him up, "this is one of your big brothers Sam."
Adam did a little wave. Sam stared at him with wide eyes. He looked nothing like him or Dean. And he was so... small? Which at first sounded silly to Sam because he knew Adam was technically still a baby so of course he was small. Sam's the baby and he's smaller than Dean. But to meet a kid smaller than him felt like a weird shock.
"Why don't you go show Sam your room?" Kate offered, still talking. "Daddy and I can finish dinner and we'll eat in a few."
Daddy. That word punched Sam right in the gut. Only he was allowed to call him Daddy.
John pulled Sam inside the small house and gently pushed him in the direction towards Adam's room. It was a small room with lots of stuff in it. A bed, a chest filled with toys, and a shelf with books and coloring supplies on it. Adam happily walked around the room babbling and getting things out to show Sam. Sam was still hesitant at first, until Adam pulled him on the floor with him, brought him a bunch of toys, and showed him how to play with them. Then Sam started to warm up and relax and played back with him.
Mary had all her teacher stuff spread all over the kitchen table. Earlier that day she gave tests in all her classes, which meant she now had hundreds of tests to grade. She had been at this for two hours and all the answers were started to blur and blend together. She was really starting to hate the letters A, B, C and D and considered banning multiple choice from her tests forever.
Feeling a headache coming on, she rubbed her eyes and took a few deep breaths. When she reopened them, she saw Dean standing in the doorway to the kitchen and gasped.
"Jesus Dean, you scared me."
"Sorry," he said quietly, trying to hide behind the wall.
Mary watched him. She could tell he felt embarrassed by what had happened earlier that evening.
"I made a sandwich for dinner. Would you like me to make you one?" she offered.
Dean shrugged.
Mary got up from the table and started getting sandwich ingredients out. Dean came out from his hiding spot and strolled over to one of the bar stools at the kitchen counter and sat down.
"I'm sorry," Dean said quietly after a short while. So quiet, Mary was almost convinced she imagined it.
"What for baby?" she asked.
Dean sniffled and rubbed one of his eyes with his sweatshirt sleeve. It was then Mary noticed how tired he appeared.
"You're allowed to be upset Dean. You know that right?"
Dean nodded.
"And I know that you know you can always come to one of us. We're all going through this together and if you're not ready for things like meeting Adam, that's okay too."
Dean nodded again.
Mary finished making his sandwich and walked around the counter towards him. She put the plate in front of him and held his face in her hands.
"I love you."
"I love you too," Dean mumbled, hating the mushy feeling. Mary smiled and kissed his forehead. She went back to grading papers while Dean ate the sandwich.
"We're home!" Sam screamed, throwing open the front door and running into the kitchen. John followed in behind him and leaned against the doorway to the kitchen where Dean just was a few minutes ago.
"Hey! How was it?" Mary asked. Sam sat on her lap and started rambling about Adam and how much fun they had that night.
"You have to come with us next time!" Sam said when he finished, turning towards Dean.
"Yeah, sounds like I missed out," he responded, sounding truly disappointed at himself for not sucking it up and going.
"There'll be other dinners Dean," John said, attempting to reassure his son. Dean gave him a small smile and nodded. "I better get going."
"Wait," Mary said, setting Sam back on the floor, "I'll walk you out."
"Uh oh," Sam said when they left the room.
"What?" Dean asked, only playing half of his attention to his brother.
"That means they're going to talk."
"Maybe. What did you do?" Dean teased.
"I didn't do anything!" Sam screamed. "I don't think."
Dean laughed and threw his empty plate in the sink.
"Dean?"
"Yeah?"
"Are you still mad at Dad? Is that why you didn't go?"
Dean sighed and tried to think of a good answer.
