IT IS FINALS AND INSTEAD OF STUDYING IM WRITING THIS!
Long Live BRUCAS- Yup. I thought that seemed appropriate for their first sessions. And in character.
Shazza19- HAHAHA I have turned you! Thanks for giving this story a chance. I hope you stay. I have several ideas for angsty Dean and teenage rebellion...
Kathy- Glad you're liking this story! I try to stay in character as much as I can so I had fun writing this last chapter.
"You sure about this?"
"Come on John. We both knew this was a long time coming."
"So that means we can't work on it?"
"We've had all this time to work on it. I'm tired of working on it."
Silence filled the room and soon the only sound heard was the ticking of the clock.
"I don't like this."
"And you think I do?"
"It's not too late!"
"You've been gone almost two months!"
"I haven't gone anywhere! I've been right here the entire time."
"For the boys! Not for me."
Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
"So what now?"
"You can keep the house."
"Are you sure?"
"Whatever the boys haven't taken over belongs to you anyway. Besides, it wouldn't feel right if Kate came over."
"She at the apartment a lot?"
"...Yeah. Yeah, she's been by a few times."
Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
"I want the boys to decide their custody. You can see them anytime you want, but I'm not going to force them into an every-other-week situation."
"I think that's fair. Of course, they're welcome to stay as long as they want, but I think the house with you should be their main base."
Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
"I don't want her parenting the boys."
"Mary-"
"I don't want the boys left alone with her."
"Mary!"
"I don't mind them going over and spending time with Adam but you have to be there. I will not let them be upset over a random woman telling them what to do."
"She's not a random woman."
"You know what I mean."
Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
"Are we ready?"
"I think we've discussed everything that wasn't already in writing."
"I agree."
"Okay then. I just need signatures."
The lawyer slid the paper and a pen over to Mary. She fought back tears as she clicked the pen and signed and initialed all over the form. When she was done, she slid it across the table to John, who did the same.
"Is that all?"
"I will pass this along to the court for them to approve."
"So that's it then?"
"We're divorced."
Time stood still and yet, the ticking sound carried out to the hallway as the two began to leave the courthouse.
"I have to see the boys," Mary said tearfully.
"I'll get Dean, you get Sam, and we'll meet back at the house?"
"No," Mary corrected. John stopped in his tracks. "I'll get Dean, you get Sam."
John nodded sympathetically realizing that that was probably the better option. He watched her get in the car and drive off before turning around and punching the wall on the side of the courthouse.
Mary leaned against the car door waiting for Dean to come out from class. She had called the office and asked that Dean be waiting outside. Word spread throughout the teaching staff about the divorce so no one was surprised when she asked to pick him up early.
"Hey," she said when Dean finally came waltzing out to the parking lot. "How was school?"
"Everyone was acting hella weird," Dean said. "Mr. Williams held me after class to check-in and Ms. Alden said I could turn in my essay whenever I wanted."
Damn her coworkers.
"Why did you pull me out?"
"Why? You wanna go back to class?"
"Is Sam okay?" Dean asked, starting to panic. "Is it Dad?"
Mary grabbed his face. "Everyone is okay. Dad and I just wanted you and Sam home today. That's all."
"Oh. Why?"
"We'll talk when we go home."
"About what?"
"Dean. Please."
Dean stopped talking and got in the car.
John tried his hardest to casually stroll into the office of the elementary school.
"I need to pick up my kid," he told the lady at the desk.
"Name?"
"Sam Winchester."
"Reason?"
"Doctor's appointment."
"Will he return?"
"No. I'm keeping him home."
She typed the information into her computer and then picked up the phone.
"Can you send Sam to the office? His parent is here to pick him up for an appointment." She hung up the phone. "You can have a seat."
John smiled to thank her and sat down on the wooden bench by the door. A couple of minutes later Sam walked in dragging his backpack.
"I have a doctor's appointment?" he asked when he saw his dad.
"Yes you do," John said, forgetting that was the excuse he gave the woman.
"But Mom didn't say anything about a doctor's appointment."
"Maybe Mom forgot."
"But I just had-"
"Samuel!" John snapped on accident. At this point, they had left the office and were on their way to the car. Feeling guilty, John bent down to look at Sam, who was now avoiding eye contact.
"Look, Mommy's getting Dean, and then when we go home, we're going to have a family meeting, okay?"
"Did I do something wrong? Are we in trouble?"
"No, no, no bud! You and Dean are not in trouble. We just need to have a conversation as a family, okay?"
Sam nodded. John put his hand on his shoulder and led him to the car. When they got to the house, Mary and Dean weren't there. John still had a house key and let the two of them into the house.
"What do we need to talk about?" Sam asked.
"How about we wait for Mom and Dean?"
"Did you two get a divorce?"
John was flabbergasted. "Where did you hear that?"
"Adam told me."
John facepalmed. Adam must have overheard when John told Kate that Mary had filed.
"Uh, yeah... yeah buddy we got a divorce."
Sam's lip started quivering and he immediately started bawling in the entryway. John scooped him up and Sam tightly wrapped his arms around his neck. John sat down on the couch and positioned Sam on his lap.
"I don't want you to go!"
"Listen to me," John whispered. "I am not going anywhere."
"Yes you are! George's parents got a divorce and he hasn't seen his dad in a year!"
"I'm not George's dad," John said, trying to calm him down. "I love you and Dean very much and I promise I am not going anywhere."
Sam continued to cry and John rocked him back and forth. Eventually, Mary and Dean walked in.
"You told him?"
"He guessed."
"MOMMY!" Sam wailed. Mary ran right over and sat next to them on the couch.
"What's going on?" Dean said, standing frozen in fear in the doorway.
"Dean-" John started.
"No," Dean said, starting to put two and two together.
"Come here," Mary said, reaching an arm out to him.
"How could you two do that!?"
John passed Sam off to Mary as Dean bolted out the front door. John was right behind him and caught him in the front yard.
"Come back inside Dean."
"Let me go!" Dean said, fighting his dad.
"We didn't bring you home so you could run away. We brought you home so we could talk."
"I don't wanna talk! Fuck talking!"
Dean continued to squirm in John's arms but John wasn't letting go. Dean resulted to hitting his dad to get him to release but was too upset to hit hard enough. Overcome with so many emotions and too tired to fight for long, he eventually surrendered. John gently pulled Dean back inside the house and closed the door.
