Here's the next part!
Ben Warren was on cloud 9. His idea to combine surgery and firefighting had been in operation for all of six hours, and he had already saved a life with it. And not just any life, but the life of one of their own.
Rigo Vasquez was alive and fighting for his life in surgery, which was not great, but the fact that he was alive at all was 100% because of the PRT. Sure, his excitement was slightly dampened by the fact that someone from 19 had been injured, but he was still feeling pretty good.
As he walked to the waiting room to wait for an update of Rigo, he walked past Andrew and Carina Deluca who were clearly fighting about something, though they were doing it all in Italian so he had no idea what was going on. As he walked past, Andrew stormed away, Carina sighing and shaking her head.
Ben didn't know the OB that well considering she started at Grey Sloan right around the time he was leaving it, but he had been at various functions with her, and he was friends with Andrew so that made them friends by proxy sort of.
"Hey Carina, everything ok?" he asked, walking over to her because he was concerned.
"Si," Carina sighed, "Andrea is just…going through some things right now and he will not let me help him."
"Anything I can help with?" Ben offered, knowing from experience that sometimes things were better coming from friends than siblings.
"No," Carina said, shaking her head, "No. I just need him to understand what I am trying to get him to see. What are you doing here?"
"I am waiting to see how a member of my team is," Ben said, "Did you hear about the rocket near the tech schools?"
"Si," Carina nodded, that incident having been the talk of the hospital, "Did someone from your team get injured?"
"Yeah," Ben nodded, "It was so stupid. Two people who are not really on speaking terms because one of them did something really horrible to the other one ended up working together, and someone got hurt."
"Who got hurt?" Carina asked, feeling a sense of dread filling her stomach, knowing that Maya was currently not on speaking terms with Andy.
She wasn't really sure what she and the fire captain were doing, but the thought of something happening to the blonde made her feel a little sick.
"This guy who just transferred to our shift," Ben said, looking at Carina weird, "Why?"
"Oh, um…" Carina said, trying to figure out what to say, "I just…Andrea and Maggie did that ride along with your team that one day and Andrea is still friends with some of them, and he would want to know if they were hurt."
"Oh," Ben said, nodding, "Yeah, no. He would not know this guy. He's actually kind of a jackass, and no one on our team is particularly fond of him, but it's still hard when someone gets hurt."
"Is your whole team here?" Carina asked, hoping she could go steal a few minutes with Maya, maybe check in with her, "I know sometimes you all wait when someone is injured."
"No," Ben said, shaking his head, "It's just me and the battalion chief. The captain took everyone else back to the station. Everyone is pissed at her."
"Your captain is a woman?" Carina said, playing coy just to see what Ben thought about Maya, having listened to the blonde talk about how much everyone had disliked her as captain, "I thought Andrea said it was a man."
"We just got a new captain," Ben said, "She's the youngest captain in the department and the first woman captain at 19, and it has not gone so well. Her best friend was supposed to get the job, but Bishop got the job instead."
"Has it been different having a woman as a captain?" Carina asked.
"It has been different having a former Olympian as captain," Ben said, "That's what she did before firefighting. She was an Olympic gold medal runner. She's intense. I don't mind it so much and she's been supportive of the PRT, but there is a lot of tension in the station because she got the job. I personally think Herrera probably would have done a better job, but it's whatever. But she decided to let two people who were fighting be paired up today and that resulted in one of them being in the OR so…"
"Do you blame your captain?" Carina asked.
"Kinda," Ben said, "I think she should have made a different choice, but I don't have enough experience to say really. I'm sure the rest of the team is pissed at her though because this just adds to the rest."
"Well, I'm sure Maya made the best call she could," Carina said as her pager started going off, "I have to go. I hope your friend pulls through."
"Thanks," Ben called as Carina left.
As he walked back to the waiting area, he thought about what Carina had just said, trying to remember if he had told Carina their captain's name was Maya. He shook his head, deciding that he probably had or maybe Andrew had talked about Maya Bishop.
He went back to wait to find out about Rigo, relieved when his wife came a few hours later and told them that he had pulled through.
Ben decided to head back to the station, knowing the PRT would not look great if it spent most of its entire first day at the hospital. When he pulled back into the barn, he noticed it was empty, the entire team out at another call. He walked back into the station, seeing Barnes sitting at the desk.
"Hey, when did they get called out?" Ben asked.
"About three minutes before you got back," Barnes said, "How is Rigo?"
"They were extubating him when I left," Ben said, "He's doing well. Miranda said they are pretty confident he will pull through."
"Good. I don't have to murder Gibson and Bishop…I mean," Barnes said, looking to the stairs. Ben turned around to see who was there, shocked when he saw none other than Carina Deluca herself.
"Carina?" Ben said, confused, "What are you doing here?"
"I was just…brining something," Carina said, not sure what she should say because Maya told her she wasn't looking for a girlfriend and even though they had gotten past her outburst, she still wasn't sure exactly where they stood.
"Yeah, she was bringing some amazing smelling lasagna to the captain," Barnes said, "Hey, Warren, I need to, uh, use the facilities. Can you watch the phones?"
"Yeah," Ben nodded as Barnes headed upstairs, "Carina, why were you brining Maya food?"
"You said today had been a hard day," Carina shrugged, biting her lip.
"How do you even know Maya?" Ben said before his eyes got wide, "Wait, are you, like, dating my captain?"
"Dating is a strong work," Carina said, making a face.
"Wait, really, you and Bishop?" Ben said, trying not to let his jaw hit the floor, "Seriously?"
"We have just been…talking," Carina said, "And getting to know each other. I don't know if it will even go anywhere. She seems pretty… closed off?"
"Yeah," Ben nodded, "That's one word for her. I can't believe it."
"Don't tell anyone," Carina begged, "Please? I don't know what we are doing and I don't want to cause any problems for Maya."
"My lips are sealed," Ben said, "But didn't everyone see you earlier?"
"No," Carina said, shaking her head, "No. Maya and I just stayed in her office and then they all got called out and I went up to put the rest of the lasagna in the fridge for her for later."
"Ok," Ben said, "Well, I won't tell. I just can't believe that you and Bishop are even, like, doing whatever it is you are doing. She never dates, except for Jack and that lasted all of five minutes until she decided she wanted to be captain."
"We are not dating," Carina insisted, "I don't know what we are doing, but we are not dating."
"Fine," Ben said, putting his hands up, "Whatever you say."
Just then, the alarm sounded, calling Ben to the scene with the others.
"I've gotta go," Ben said, "See you later Carina."
"Ciao Ben," Carina called, turning to walk out of the station.
"Hey Carina," Ben said, stopping her, "I just want you to know, if you do end up dating my captain, I think it would be great."
"Really?" Carina said, confused.
"Yeah," Ben said, "It would be nice to not be the only one with a medical degree around her."
Carina chuckled, shaking her head as Ben headed to the PRT and she headed home, genuinely wondering what it would be like to date the mysterious fire captain.
What did you think? If you have anything you want to see me incorporate, let me know!
Also, how are we feeling about tonight's episode? I think we are going to see some kind of injury for our favorite former captain, and I am interested to see how Maya and Carina navigate that.
