The un named song in here is called The Jester by Badflower, yeah I know that's a fairly recent song but dam the lyrics were too good and I've been listening to that on repeat for most of the week while writing this fanfic. Enjoy!
Luke's PoV
Today sucked, I hated my birthday in general because my parents always tried to make it a good day for me yet it would always end up in fighting. However this time I wasn't even able to say sorry, I was left on the other side wishing I could say sorry to my mother for every silly argument we had. She wanted something else for me and at the time I couldn't see that but now that I had nothing to live for, my eyes were opened to the fact that she just wanted her only child to succeed in life, instead he ended up dead and leaving her with so much regret. It hurt both of us and ate us both alive. I spent the day watching her bake a cake to celebrate my birthday with tears running down her face from time to time. I tried reaching out to hold her but she couldn't even hear me let alone see me or feel me so I sat in the kitchen, crying most of the day. My father was stoic for most of the day till it came to blowing out my candles then I watched him break down. It was bad, I spent the better half of the afternoon contemplating how I move on or whatever ghosts do, I didn't want to witness another birthday like this. But after a few hours of moping and no bright ideas, I was forced to go back to check on Julie.
Now we were currently in a taxi ride to who knows where, I couldn't understand why we couldn't just do this another day, all I wanted to do was crawl into bed and go to sleep for the next week but apparently that wasn't an option. We eventually arrived at our old stomping grounds, the beach where we used to play for tips. I thought we were going to settle by the rocks but Reggie had other plans of making us trudge in the dark down the beach to the caves and ignore the fact of how dangerous that would be on slippery sharp rocks in the dark. I reached out and held Julie's hand and helped her navigate through Reggie's very silly idea while she used a torch to show us where to walk. If he killed her I would find a way to kill him.
Somehow we managed to get to the caves without injury and Reggie started setting light to a fire that had already been set up.
"Look I know your grumpy Luke and I know your probably wanting to murder me right now but you need this more so suck it up" said Reggie when he saw me glaring at him as he began blowing on the fire. I hated it but he was right so after a moment I pushed him out of the way and took over building the fire, he had too much wood on top as always.
Once the fire was roaring I noticed a number of things, Reggie had planned this, there were a few of our acoustic guitars, several bags of marshmallows with chocolate biscuits, sleeping bags, a chilly bin with who knows what inside of it, extra blankets, water, a portable speaker and a first aid kit. Julie had already begun to take off her jacket and snow pants before getting up to explore snack options and Alex was busy settling into a couch that had been poofed in and putting a blanket on top of his lap. I had to admit, this was actually kind of epic. We used to do this a lot but with less stuff since we would have had to carry it or leave it here. Now that we were ghosts we could poof in any thing we wanted.
Once I was satisfied that the fire wasn't going to die out, I found the old pokers we used for roasting marshmallows in the back of the cave. Twenty five years really hadn't changed them much, although they were kept in a plastic wrap to protect from the elements. I sat down next to Julie and wrapped us both in a blanket after passing the pokers to Reggie.
Reggie began setting two of them up with sausages coming to a total of four each and passed one to Alex to begin cooking. I couldn't see how Julie was going to eat all four but whatever. I pulled her close and stared into the fire.
"Hey Luke, are you ready for this?" asked Reggie.
"Ready for what, we can't eat or did you forget this?"
Reggie smiled a huge goofy smile, then in front of my eyes he took a bite from the sausage and swallowed it with a very satisfactory groan.
I was up and out of the couch within seconds, grabbing a poker and getting ready to cook my own sausages. Julie was giggling softly and trying to help my fumbling hands that were too excited. "So among checking in with Julie's brother and trying fruitlessly to help the police, I decided to try eating one of their donuts and eventually I managed to swallow, just gotta concentrate just like playing guitar"
I rolled my eyes, I was born to play guitar, I was born to eat, this should be a walk in the park. Alex and Reggie had already devoured there's and I was waiting for our first two to cool down, I then pulled one off for Julie and the other for me. I concentrated very hard on imagining the taste and tried a small bite, within seconds the rest was gone into my mouth, food had never tasted so good. I couldn't hold back the groan that left my lips which stirred up a giggle in Julie.
"These are so much better than those hot dogs we had" Alex said.
"Hot dogs?" asked Julie.
"Oh um yeah, we used to be a band and well that's how we died, we ate some bad hot dogs just before we played a gig that would have changed our lives" Alex said sadly.
"Don't forget Luke, there's marshmallows over there" said Reggie with a smug look. I was out of my chair before he could finish that sentence to dig out those biscuits and bring them with the marshmallows to the couch.
"Sorry Julie, Luke's a bit of a monster when it comes to food" said Alex
"Shut up" I halfheartedly said, he was right and I knew it but it had been forever since we ate.
Alex made a sensible choice of grabbing his own marshmallows and biscuits to share with Reggie as he already knew I wasn't sharing except with Julie.
"Um, so what are the biscuits for? I've never actually done this before" asked Julie as she was nibbling on a biscuit on its own.
"You know if we do find your dad, can we torment him for a few years for not taking the time to teach you these very important life skills such as making smore's?" I asked as I started roasting some marshmallows.
"I dunno, guess it depends on how good these will taste?" she replied.
I showed her how to pull the marshmallow off using the biscuit with the chocolate end on the inside and handed it over completely forgetting about my own and wanting to just take in her reaction. Her face melted like a smore does into one of bliss and all she could manage was a thumbs up. We all joined her in soft laughter and I handed her a second.
"Another thing you can do Julie, is just eat the roasted marshmallow how it is, yeah there's no chocolate but then it all just melts in your mouth in a gooey mess" said Alex as he passed her one that had cooled down a bit.
"Oh man, this is so good, we gotta come do this at least once a month!" she moaned.
"That actually was one of our traditions, we all had pretty crap parents so we used to come here after school once a month and sleep out here. We would tell our parents we were staying at each other's houses and since our parents were terrible at talking to us let alone other parents, we got away with it. Guess that no girls rule is out the window, welcome to our club Julie" said Reggie with a big smile.
Content with marshmallows and sausages I had pulled Julie back to wrap my arm around her as I watched her enjoy a few more. Then Alex passed me my guitar and gave me the look which got Julie clapping her hands in excitement. Alex bowed for her then got up to find his Cajon that he also kept here for such reasons and Reggie picked up his guitar. After tuning our guitars, Reggie led us off with a pretty epic song. It was a campfire one that we never released but used to love singing when we felt like shit. It was a song that Bobby never could relate to which is why he never came to many of our camp fires. His parents were pretty nice which is why we were always at his house jamming in his garage.
I came in singing and couldn't help but blush as I saw Julie soak up every word I sang. She hadn't heard us sing together and we could all see how in love she was. We were a little rusty but this song we could sing in our sleep and we each had a verse and a chorus to sing. This song meant too much to us for just one of us to sing.
(Luke) Like a Jester at the ball
Rubbed my shoulders with the kings
And I was draped in gold and velvet
Bathing in applause while I was jumping through the rings
And then the cooks would sound a bell
And all the kings would lick their lips
But I couldn't find a place mat
The dinner table's full and there's no room for me to sit
Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
Just say you want me, just say you need me
Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
Does anybody need me?
Is every last soul just fucking me over?
With tears on their shoes and ice on their shoulders
Is there anybody out there looking out for me
(Alex) Lord, I live to entertain
All my pride is in my praise
I hum along with this vibration
And hope to God I make it
(Reggie) If any chord that I could strum
Made me feel less like a man
I'd slam my fingers in the doorway
And shatter all the bones so I could never strum again
(Alex) Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
Oh just say you want me, just say you need me
Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
For me?
(Luke) Is every last soul just fucking me over?
With tears on their shoes and ice on their shoulders
Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
(Reggie) Whoa, is there anybody out there looking out for me?
Oh just say you want me, just say you need me
Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
For me?
(All) Whoa, is every last soul just fucking me over?
With tears on their shoes and ice on their shoulders
Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
For me?
(Luke) Is every last soul just fucking me over?
With tears on their shoes and ice on their shoulders
Is there anybody out there looking out for me?
By the time we were done, Julie was in awe, she had only heard me softly sing, she had no idea that she wasn't the only one who could sing.
"You guys are amazing!" she eventually managed to say.
"Thank you Julie, you're really good at singing also!" said Reggie beaming.
Alex chose the next song which surprised Julie as she knew this one. Apparently after we passed, the band Hanson finally made it out of the club scene. We had hung out with them a few times and knew their songs fairly well since we played gigs back to back. Reggie interrupted our first song to poof in a keyboard for Julie and a keyboard stand so she could join in. We hadn't seen her play but we knew she had to know something since the piano wasn't ours. So we started with 'Where's the love' and once we got to 'I will come to you' Julie decided to join us and boy could this girl shred on the keyboard. We ended with 'Man from Milwaukee' which got us all standing and head banging. It definitely was a feel good song. Reggie was right, I definitely needed this after the day I had had. It had been too long since we had come here and it was good to just sing for just us. Just as we had finished off 'Man from Milwaukee', Julie decided to take charge and lead us off into 'Thinking of You' which made me so happy. Not only did we get her to shred on the keyboard but to take charge and sing. Obviously we supported whatever she wanted to sing realizing she probably needed this just as much as the rest of us with her father who knows where and plotting who knows what.
Eventually the night wore on and we ended up crashing in the cave. I set up the fire so that it would last for the next few hours then I made sure Julie had her winter clothes on and extra socks. Alex and Reggie helped me move the heavy old couches back as they converted into beds, then Julie and I snuggled into our sleeping bags and cuddled together on one bed while Reggie and Alex settled into warmer clothes and their sleeping bags on the other pull out bed.
"Now guys, you're staying over there tonight. If I wake up and you're over here, I'll be stuffing melted marshmallows into your instruments!" I said in my most serious tone before saying goodnight.
I pulled Julie into my arms and she snuggled in close for warmth, pulling a mink blanket around us.
Julie's PoV
I waited till I could hear Luke peacefully snoring and then quietly tried escaping his death grasp without waking him. Once I had succeeded I sneaked over to where Reggie and Alex were already asleep. I gently shook Reggie's shoulder then Alex's. Once they sat up I whispered close to their faces "Let's move him, he said nothing about us moving him to this bed, it will be warmer anyway!"
"Oh! Julie I think I love you, let's do it! Alex are you in?" said Reggie.
Alex couldn't help shaking his head "He's going to be mad but technically you're correct, he didn't say we couldn't move him! Let's do it, I'll grab his feet, Reggie grab his torso, Julie can you keep his head stable so he doesn't wake up from the movement" directed Alex.
After we got our giggles out of the way, we worked together to move Luke into the middle of the other bed. He nearly woke up when I accidentally kicked a rock into the wall but thankfully went back to sleep and we continued moving trying our best to not giggle. Alex then grabbed the other blankets and I took off my snow gear since I wouldn't need it with this much body heat. We mostly were in the same positions, the only difference was Alex wasn't trapping me underneath him but he still kept an arm loosely over my side to rest his hand on my shoulder and his other arm under his head. "If you get cold Julie just tug my arm and i'll move over more" said Alex around a big yawn. Reggie buried us in mink blankets and we were soon fast asleep.
I woke up once in the night because I was really cold and somehow the blankets had been thrown off, I sat up to pull them over us. The movement woke Alex and Reggie and they helped me pull them up and around everyone. Without even asking Alex had resumed smothering me to the point I couldn't move and even Reggie had rested his arm over my arm. Both felt cold as well, Luke was the only one somehow still warm so we fell back asleep snuggling as close to Luke as we could. I fell asleep with a smile on my face, it was warm, safe and funny at the same time.
