He is tall, glum, and trudges up the path with desultory purpose. His spirit song is discordant, full of basso and sour notes. She hides a wince under her welcoming smile.
Her first greeting is in her own tongue. He replies in German so she switches to that. She hears the emotion behind the words, the resentment simmering beneath the surface, the discontent, loud and harsh and strong.
She warns him but does not stop him. The choice is his.
When he returns, the song is lighter, smoother, anticipatory. Yet through it runs an ancient, foul, sinister note. She shivers.
