Catra laid on her back on the top of a pile of boxes in the storage with her eyes closed. She needed some peace after all that happened within the last hour. Even the noises echoing from the corridors didn't bother her.
She was still unsure what to do once they returned to the Fright Zone. There was still the plan of using Adora as a weapon on their side, but would they be able to? Catra thought Entrapta might find a way to make it work, although that plan would take some time before it brings any results, and unfortunately, time was not something the Horde had to spare at the moment.
This is crazy, she thought. Everything seemed to fit into place, but at the same time, it felt disconnected. When she knew about the First One's Disk, Catra could picture the winning image so vivid inside her mind, a picture she now cannot even believe anymore. And it was all because of her.
Opening her eyes, Catra looked at where their prisoner was. Adora, now gagged and wrapped around ropes Catra found around, was rolling left and right with a smile, muffling laughs like this was some sort of a game. Catra couldn't believe the same Adora she once knew, the one who was always responsible, the upright one, the "I must live to expectations" and "I can't relax" Adora, would be reduced to this.
In a way, Catra wanted to laugh, but something stopped her. Normally she would, it was strange even for her to admit how boring she felt watching Adora act like this. And the more she thought about it, the more Catra thought this was empt-
"Ok, enough playing around," Catra leaped down to the ground. She wouldn't admit it, but this for some reason or another, irritated her.
When Adora came rolling to her, Catra stopped her with a well-placed foot. When Adora looked up, she saw Catra looking down at her with a glare. Catra then picked their prisoner up and made her sit on a box, proceeding to take out her gag right after.
"Hey, Catr-" Adora was going to greet her former friend, but the person in question quickly shut her once Catra grabbed her mouth.
"Look, I don't know what is wrong with you, or what you think you are now, but you still don't get the situation?" Catra angrily said, letting her emotion flow in her words "You lost! Your stupid friends are probably dead! You got captured by us! We will bring you back to the Fright Zone and use you against the things you love the most! And you are taking this all as a joke?!"
Like a valve was broken inside her, Catra was speaking her mind without a pause. She thought this would bring her some peace in mind by laying out the picture to their prisoner, but it only agitated her more. Not because of what Adora was doing, no.
It was something inside Catra, something she wanted to lock away forever but it always came back in a way. However, this Adora was not helping keep whatever this is down either. Even with her mouth blocked, Catra could feel the person she was holding was still smiling behind her hand while staring directly into her eyes.
"C'mon, Adora! You still don't get it?! I won! I won over you! Why can't you show me at least something?!" Catra took her hand away from Adora's mouth and brought both of them on the prisoner's shoulders, shaking her "Tell me! Out with it! What do you think of this?!"
Catra didn't know what would happen and it scared her. This was not the usual Adora she knew. The usual Adora would be sarcastic, brave, hopeful in this situation, saying something that would make Catra rebuke it till one of them yielded - in many situations from the past, it was Adora that yielded - but this is not the usual conversation they always had. Recomposing herself after the shaking, Adora started to look around with a thoughtful expression.
"Oh yeah… Bow, Glimmer, and Seahawk aren't here…" Adora said with a little worry in her voice.
"Yes… Yes! They aren't here, you are alone now!" Catra said smiling. Finally, Adora was starting to see the situational as it is, soon she would be begging her to-
"Bummer, they are losing the party…" Adara pouted "Oh well, sucks to be them, I guess, right, Catra?"
After hearing her former friend's words, Catra blankly stared at Adora with complicated feelings. Something inside her… was twisting.
It was not right, she thought, None of this is right...
Catra could feel herself shaking, her whole body trembled, but she didn't know why. Tears started to slowly accumulate in the corner of her eyes, but she didn't know why. She could feel her willpower leaving her as she went limp, but didn't know why. And because she didn't know why that affected her so much - that was why Adora affected her so much.
"It is… hopeless…" Catra said without any strength. The picture she had in mind is now foggy or was there even an image like that even existed in the first place. They could win the war in that instant and Catra wouldn't feel a thing. This was not how it was supposed to go. Not like this… Not with Adora like this.
Catra's mind went on a spiral of despair. Her whole world seemed empty, out of life. She felt like the ground beneath her stopped existing and she was constantly falling, with no ground to hit or something around to stop her or grab her. Even the worst punishment from Shadow Weaver would pale in comparison to what she felt at that moment. But it was also in that moment, that something… changed. Not because of her thoughts, but because of giggles. Small, true giggles Catra heard coming in front of her.
"You know, you are still the same dumb-dumb from when we were kids, right?" Adora said while giggling to herself, not minding Catra's struggle.
"… What?" Catra asked in confusion.
"I mean, if you wanna keep someone locked away, you don't set the password as your favorite number, right?" Adora laughed hard like this was the punchline of the best joke ever "Didn't you learn the password protocols in the Horde Captain Orientation or something?"
"… Nobody warned me when those things were happening, so I sorta skipp-" Catra answered their prisoner normally, but then she realized. While Adora was finding her situation funny, Catra notice something from how her former friend talked. That something... was not a cue she would let pass, "Wait, you know where you are?!" Catra exclaimed.
"Well, now that you mention… I think we are inside a storage room of some kind," Adora answered.
"No, no, no! I mean you know we captured you and are discussing using you as a weapon?!" Catra asked with care to not make Adora confused.
"Huh, duuuuh! You are the Horde, I am the Rebellion, this was kinda obvious," Adora said, "Although I am not sure why Scorpia wanted to play tag earlier…"
She didn't want to play tag, you dummy! Catra thought but didn't talk. Her mouth wouldn't part away from the smile she was doing. Even with Adora not having the usual state of mind, she was conscious enough to understand the basic knowledge of her surroundings. I can work with this!
"Great… this is awesome!" Catra said, looking at Adora using her usual grin "Hey, Adora, guess what? We will use you against your precious little friends and the Rebellion will fall by their precious little heroine. All that you love and care for will be destroyed by your own hands. How does that make you feel?"
"Oh, that will never happen, you know?" Adora responded with a grin of her own.
Catra was back in her usual game. This is how it was supposed to go from the start. The taunts and curses they throw at one another while aiming to get the upper hand, but in the end, Catra always won those. Catra was happy, euphoric with the flow of the conversation, but then… It happened.
"Even if I was used by the Horde, I wouldn't destroy the thing I love and care for the most in the world," Adora said while looking a bit flushed on the cheeks. This, for some reason, made Catra curious.
"Oh yeah? What is it? Your little friends?" Catra asked.
"No, I mean, I love them and all, but they aren't at that level…" Adora responded, embarrassed.
"Oh?" Catra raised an eyebrow "And what level is that? And who is it?" She tried to remember all the allies Adora had, but aside from Sparkles and Arrow, none of them seemed that close to her from what Catra remembered.
"Well, you know… It is… well… It is not like I can't tell… Actually, I can't. Stop asking!" Adora was more embarrassed than before, her face bright red similar to a fresh tomato.
This reaction was new even for Catra. Adora never did this back in the Fright Zone. She always seemed so confident, strong, and bright to whoever saw her, and now she is like… this. Someone did this to Adora. For a reason she didn't know, Catra closed her hand into a fist and clutched it hard enough that her claws almost pierced her skin.
"Oh yeah, you are not going to tell me who they are?" Catra said, seemed a bit angry.
"Well… No! I will not!" Adora strongly refused.
"But how would you know they wouldn't be destroyed?" Catra said, toying with her, "I mean, you are She-Ra."
"They know how to take a punch or two from me," Adora laughed.
Annoying, Catra thought. Adora was acting weird even with all the Disk influence. Something was off. If this person existed, who could it be? It was then that Catra realized. There was another person with Adora's group this time.
"Oh, I see…" Catra said grinning at Adora while her anger grew, "So you are after that other guy."
"Who? Seahawk?" Adora asked, still blushing.
"So it is him!" Catra exclaimed.
"What? No! He likes Mermista," Adora explained without skipping her breath.
"Wow, Adora, I'm impressed," Catra clapped her hands, "You are after a guy who is already in a relationship."
"What?! No, I-" Adora negated as fast as she could, but didn't finish her sentence. She then looked down, face still red.
And it was all Catra needed to know. She didn't know why this made her this frustrated, but it was enough that she wanted to beat that guy up and show Adora his sorry state. And that was exactly what Catra would do. Turning her back to Adora, she went to the door.
"… Do you… really want to know?" Adora softly asked, making Catra halt her steps. She looked back and saw Adora looking up at her, still blushing.
"I already know, but can you repeat his name again?" Catra answered, wanting this to be over as quickly as possible to go search the dark-skinned man not named Arrow.
"Well… they are…" Adora said, but the name was whispered in a low voice.
"C'mon, even I can't hear that," Catra said angrily after her ears only caught Adora's murmurs.
"They are…" Adora whispered once again, much to Catra's annoyance.
Swiftly, Catra close distance to Adora, bringing her face next to hers. Even if that hurt, she wanted Adora herself to admit the one she likes.
"Try it, again," Catra said, fixing her eyes on Adora, who became even redder than before.
"Well…" Adora slowly said, "… They are…" Catra watched her mouth to make sure she caught exactly the right name "Their name is…" A little bit longer and Catra would know. The seconds, not, didn't even reach one second but for Catra it felt like an eternity. Her eyes zoomed at Adora's mouth, not missing any details from her words.
And then, out of a sudden, Adora's mouth disappeared from Catra's line of sight. Instead, she was now matching Adora's closed eyes right in front of her. Before Catra could realize what happened, she felt a soft, warm sensation on her face - on her lips. It took a little while for her to understand Adora's actions, but once she did, Catra jumped backward with a yelp, crashing into a pile of metal boxes.
Did she…, Catra thought as she brought her hand over her lips, … Did Adora just… Did Adora just…!
Her face was now just as red as Adora's was before, if not worse. Catra's mind was foggy, with her not being able to concentrate and realize what just happened, happened. But her attention was caught by a giggle coming from where she was just standing some seconds ago.
"Hey, Catra," Adora's blue eyes were looking at her with a blush on her cheeks, her blond ponytail running over her shoulder as she smiled down at Catra, whose thoughts came to a stop when she saw how Adora was looking under the lights of the dusty storage, "Did you get it now, the one I love and care for the most-"
- Is you.
