Chapter 1
The years seemed to go by really fast for the gummies as the new baby grew. Astrid fit in great with the glen, In the few years that went by the family wondered what she would become of her. Because gummi bears don't age like human babies, but Astrid almost was in a way. One day when Astrid was about six years old, gummies along with Calla were harvesting gummi berries. Astrid was just playing with her dolls next to Sammi because she was too young to pick berries
"Hurry everyone Pick, Pick, Pick! We have to pick as many berries before this storm comes in!" Grammi shouted. "Gruffi why are you standing around doing nothing while we got work to do!"
"Well for your information, I'm just observing the perimeter, you remember last time a storm went through and collapsed a hill into our living room. I do not want that happening again, especially with a young cub living here" Gruffi shot back.
"Aww Gruffi, the storm shouldn't be as bad as that time," Calla said gently.
"Calm down Grufimundo, we'll get everything ready before the storm." Gusto said
Suddenly a low rumbling shook the valley next to the glen. Something was approaching the glen and fast! "Everyone Hide!" shouted Gruffi. Everyone ducked under a bush and hid as they watched to see what was approaching them. It was a herd of about 15 horses.
"Its okay everybody, it's just a herd of wild horses" whispered Calla
"That's good as long as their dot nangerous: I, I mean not dangerous." Zummi stammered. As the Gummies left to continue to pick berries, Astrid was the only one that stayed watching the horses. "What are those, Mommy?" Astrid said in a very cute little girl voice. "They're horses Astrid,'' whispered Sammy. "Be very very quiet, baby, you could spook them." Gusto said. The young cub nodded and slowly the family walked toward the horses.
"Great Gummies! What are you doing? Get away from those animals!" Gruffi shouted. The horses' heads shot up as they heard the shout. Calm down Gruffi, Astrid just wants to see the horses' ' Sammi said. "Yeah Gruffi, and for your information she is too young to pick berries' ' mocked Grammi. The family carefully moves toward the herd of horses when one horse catches Astrid's eye. It was a golden yellow colt with a dark brown mane and tail, skipping around what looked like his mother, a cream colored horse. He looked like he was only a few days old and already running around. When the young colt saw the gummi bear he walked right up to the little cub
"It's okay sweetie." Gusto whispered.
The young colt walked up and nuzzled the bear cub lovingly, "Awww~ that's so cute!" Gusto and Sammi said in usion.
"He's so sweet!" the cub gushed. "I'm going to name you...Spirit."
Little did the gummi bears know that this was the start of a very beautiful friendship.
The next few years Astrid and Spirit would play and ride every day. She studied horses and realized that the Great Gummies used them for travel and carrying supplies. The older Astrid grew the better bareback rider she became. During winter they would ride down the many hills in the valley, sometimes spraying snow on the gummies. Or when she would shake snow off the berry bushes just as the snow would begin to melt and she would have to help Spirit get an icicle off his tongue after he would lick the frozen water trying to get a drink. However, the gummies were a little wary of the friendship she had with the horse; especially Gruffi, as he tells her every day 'there is nothing wrong with a pet, that if that horse gets in the way of the gummi way. That horse and the herd must pack up and find a new home.' However her parents loved her horse. Gusto was actually working on a painting of her and Spirit when she got older. despite with the constant worrying of the family, Spirit and Astrid's friendship grew every single day.
