When Percy returned to Sodor, he went to Brendam Docks to find Thomas looking at a strange board on the Quay.
Percy: (whistles) Hello, Thomas! What are you doing?
Thomas: Hello, Percy. I'm looking at this board that says "DANGER". We mustn't go past it. That's Orders.
Percy: Why?
Thomas: Usually if you pass a danger notice, you'll fall down something. I went past one of those a long time ago, and fell down a mine.
Edward: (puffs up, chuckling) Danger doesn't mean falling down something, Thomas. It means it's not safe and you could either get very hurt or cause someone else to get hurt.
Percy: I can't even see a mine.
Edward: The rails that move up and down over there to help load engines or trucks onto or off of ships is broken. The rails now just slope down into the sea. Don't pass the board, or you might end up sunk.
Thomas: Thank you, Edward. We'll be sure to be careful. Right, Percy?
But Percy was too busy looking at the board to listen to Edward.
Percy: (to himself) I'm sure I could pass the board without anything happening.
Thomas: Percy?
Percy: What? Oh right, of course. Don't worry, Edward. We'll be careful. (to himself) Stupid board!
Whenever Percy went to the Docks, he would try to pass the board. One time, he tried backing up past it. Another time, he tried to push some trucks far enough to fool everyone into thinking that the trucks are pulling him. He tried all sorts of tricks, but his Driver was never fooled by any of them.
Driver: Percy, do you not remember what Thomas and Edward told you about those signs?
Percy: (to himself) It's not like I'm going to sink to the bottom of the ocean.
On his way back to the harbor, the trucks caused trouble for him and made him late.
Percy: (panting) Stupid trucks! It's like you have to ask them to cause trouble for them not to. (realizes something) That gives me an idea!
One day, he went to the Top Station to collect some trucks. He puffed up to them.
Percy: (whispering) Will you all give me a bump when we get to the Docks?
The trucks were surprised. They had never been asked to bump an engine before and were very excited.
Trucks: Of course, Percy! (laughs) When you ask us to stop, we will! We'll be on our very best behavior!
Percy was coupled to the trucks, and set off for Brendam. The trucks were surprisingly quiet the whole way.
Percy: (chuckles, to himself) Driver doesn't know my plan. I'll pretend to stop at the unloading zone, but the trucks will push me past the board. Then I'll make them stop before I'm too far past it. Even if something goes wrong, I've been stuck in water before. Water's nothing to an engine with determination.
But Percy was so conceited by his adventure through the flood, that he didn't realize how silly he was being. Every wise engine knows that you can't trust trucks.
They reached the Docks, and Percy started to apply his brakes. This was the signal for the trucks.
Trucks: On! On! On! (laughing)
Percy: Now to show Driver that there's nothing to worry about.
But the day was misty, causing the rails to be slippery. Percy tried to stop as he got closer to the board, but his wheels wouldn't grip.
Percy: Oh, no! Driver! Help!
But the trucks bumped Percy so hard that they knocked his Driver and Fireman off the footplate.
Percy: That's enough, trucks!
Trucks: On! On! On! (laughing, Percy yelling, SPLASH)
Percy was sunk, his wheels were beneath the water and he was very cold. The Fat Controller who had seen everything walked up.
Percy: Help! (sighs) I'm really in trouble now.
STH: You can say that again, Percy. What made you think that passing the danger notice was a good idea?
Percy: I'm sorry, sir, but the trucks pushed me past it.
Trucks: It wasn't out fault, sir. Percy asked us to push him past it.
STH: (sternly) Percy, is this true? (Percy's Driver and Fireman walk up beside the Fat Controller)
Percy: (sighs) Yes, sir. It is.
Driver: No wonder the trucks were so quiet. Luckily, we're not hurt from being bumped off the foot plate, but if I've told you once, I've told you a hundred times "don't pass that BOARD!"
Percy: (shivering) I'm truly sorry, everyone. Please get me out though. I promise I won't do it again.
STH: I'm sorry, Percy, but we can't until high tide. I hope this will teach you to obey Orders.
Percy: (sighs) Yes, sir.
Driver: (whispering) Are you sure we can't get him out now, sir?
STH: (whispering) We can get him out now, but I think sitting in the sea for the rest of the day will teach him a lesson.
Percy was cold and miserable. His fire had gone out and some fish were playing hide-and-seek through his wheels.
It was nearly dark when the rescue operations began. Henry brought Judy and Jerome to lift Percy out of the water.
Jerome: Ready, Judy?
Judy: Whenever you are, Jerome! (they lift Percy out and onto a flatbed)
But Percy was too cold and stiff to move by himself, so he was sent to the Steamworks the next day on Henry's goods train.
Henry: (chuckles) Well! Well! Well! Did you like the water again, Percy?
Percy: No.
Henry: I guess you need more determination. After all, "water is nothing to an engine with determination" you know. Perhaps you'll get more determination before you go in the water again.
Percy: I'm quite determined that there won't be a next time. (guard blows his whistle, Henry whistles and puffs away)
When Henry arrived at the Steamworks, he pushed Percy's flatbed into one of the sidings.
Percy: Henry?
Henry: Yes?
Percy: I'm sorry I made fun of your incident with the rain and tunnel. And thank you for rescuing me.
Henry: You're welcome. Everyone seems to not want me to forget about my incident with the tunnel.
Percy: You're a very brave engine, Henry. And a really good friend.
Henry: Thank you, Percy. You are too. (whistles, puffs away)
Percy had a lot to think about.
And with that, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. I'm glad I was able to make Henry's new personality work with the story. The next chapter will be different. As you all know the original book tried to make stories about all eight engines, but Wilbert didn't make a story about Thomas and Edward(and no, Thomas appearing in Percy Takes the Plunge and him crashing in the Fat Controller's Engines don't count). Percy Takes the Plunge is about Percy and Henry. Gordon Goes Foreign is about Gordon and Duck. Double Header is about James and Toby. The Fat Controller's Engines is about all eight engines. The next chapter will be Thomas and Edward's story that they should've had. Something I forgot to mention in the Prologue is that I'm trying to make Percy, Henry, and Gordon going to the Mainland help build up to all the engines going to England at the end of the story. With all that said, I will see you all in Chapter 2.
