With Percy at the Steamworks, Thomas had to do Percy's work as well as his own. He was glad Percy wasn't lost at sea, but was very cross with him.
Thomas: Why did Percy have to make the same mistake that I did?
Driver: (chuckles) I can see why you're both best friends. It's because you're both just like each other.
That night, a raging storm swept through the island. Thomas and Toby were having trouble sleeping.
Toby: I don't think I've ever heard such loud thunder before.
Thomas: Me neither.
The next morning when Thomas went to the harbor, he found everything in confusion. Trucks had been derailed, causing the line to be blocked, stone had fallen everywhere, and the harbor wall was damaged. It was a terrible mess.
Thomas: Cinders and ashes! Now I'm really going to be delayed.
Thomas' Driver went to telephone the Fat Controller and he returned with good news.
Driver: The Fat Controller needs us to go to Elsbridge to pick up some metal pilings to repair the harbor wall. He also says that Edward will be bringing them along with someone to help clean up the stone and derailed trucks.
Thomas: Couldn't we just use Judy and Jerome?
Driver: We have a crane here that can help put the trucks back on the track. Now let's go quickly so we can keep time.
Thomas: Who is this someone who's coming to help?
Driver: Wait and see!
Meanwhile Trevor the Traction Engine was sitting in the Vicarage Orchard at Wellsworth. He had been enjoying his new life there. Edward would stop by to see him everyday, but sometimes Trevor didn't enough work to do and would get bored. Soon, Edward came to see him as usual.
Edward: Hello, Trevor.
Trevor: (sighs) Hello, Edward.
Edward: Another one of those days?
Trevor: Yes. I like to keep busy all the time. And I like having company. Being lonely is never fun.
Edward: Well I've got great news for you, Trevor. The Fat Controller reopened the harbor at Knapford, and he has work for you to do there. Thomas is going to pick you up and take you there, so you'll finally get to meet him.
Trevor: That sounds exciting! Where there's a harbor, there's a seaside, where there's a seaside, there's children. Maybe I can give them a ride too.
Edward: (chuckles) Maybe so.
Soon Trevor was loaded onto Edward's flatbed and he set off for Elsbridge. He arrived at the station, just as Thomas arrived.
Edward: Hello, Thomas.
Thomas: Hello, Edward. Who's this funny looking engine?
Edward: This is Trevor the Traction Engine. He's that engine I was telling you all about that I saved from being scrapped.
Thomas: (puzzled) Nice to meet you, Trevor. What kind of engine are you again?
Trevor: Nice to meet you too, Thomas. And I'm a traction engine. I run on road instead of rails. I'm needed at Knapford harbor, could you please take me there?
Thomas: Of course! That's where I'm going with those metal pilings behind your flatbed.
Soon, Trevor was coupled to Thomas' train and they were soon ready to leave.
Edward: Have fun at the harbor, you two.
Trevor: Thanks, Edward. We will.
Thomas: Bye, Edward. (whistles, puffs away as Edward whistles back)
Thomas: How do you like working by Edward's branch line, Trevor?
Trevor: I love working in the orchard, but I don't have enough to do there sometimes, you know. But because I'm a traction engine, I can work anywhere, in orchards, on farms, in scrapyards, even at harbors.
Thomas: But why are you called an engine if you don't run on rails?
Trevor: I'm not any ordinary engine, I'm a traction engine. I don't need rails to be useful. Just wait and see.
When they reached the harbor, the workmen were waiting for them.
Workmen: Before we can fix the wall, we need to clean up the mess of stone and trucks. Trevor, we need you to drag the trucks toward the crane so it can lift them upright again.
Trevor: Yes, sir! Just the sort of job I like too! Now you'll see what us traction engines are capable of, Thomas.
Trevor was as good as his word. He helped Thomas clear the line of trucks, and then they filled the trucks with broken stone and other things blocking the line. Soon, the line was clear again.
Workmen: Well done, Trevor! We're ahead of schedule too. Now we can fix the harbor wall.
Thomas: Have fun, Trevor! I'll see you later.
Trevor: Where are you going?
Thomas: I have a branch line to run, like Edward, but I'll be back later with a surprise for you. (whistles, puffs away)
Trevor was very excited. He continued to work very hard, helping the workmen repair the harbor wall. The wall was damaged, but not too severely so it could be fixed within the day.
Trevor: Who needs rails?
They finished cleaning and fixing up the harbor, just as Thomas arrived with Annie and Clarabel. Thomas was surprised. The harbor looked as if the storm never happened last night. Trevor saw Thomas and rolled up towards him.
Trevor: Hello, Thomas. What do you think?
Thomas: I think this harbor will probably need it's own traction engine to help Percy run it.
Trevor: Who's Percy? And who are these coaches?
Thomas: This is Annie and this is Clarabel. Annie, Clarabel, this is Trevor the Traction Engine. He helped me clean up and fix the harbor.
Annie & Clarabel: Nice to meet you, Trevor.
Thomas: Percy is my best friend, and he usually runs this harbor, but he's at the Steamworks for repairs.
Trevor: (remembers something) Didn't you say you'd come back with a surprise for me?
Thomas: I did, and here it is! (children get out of the coaches) I brought the Vicar of Elsbridge's Sunday School group for a day at the beach. You get to give them rides today too.
Trevor: (gasps) That is a nice surprise. Thank you, Thomas!
The children had a lovely day playing on the beach and riding on Trevor.
Annie: He seems very kind.
Clarabel: He reminds me of Thomas a little bit.
Thomas: He's very hard working too. I now understand how traction engines work and how useful they can be.
That evening, everyone was sorry when it was time for Trevor to go back to the orchard. Thomas took him to Elsbridge to wait for Edward to pick him up. As Edward arrived, Trevor couldn't help but feel sad again.
Edward: Hello, Thomas and Trevor. (looks behind him) What's the matter, Trevor? You look upset. Didn't you enjoy the harbor today?
Trevor: I enjoyed working at the harbor, Edward, and I got to give some children rides, but now I'm going back to the orchard with barely any work to do.
Edward: The Vicar has plenty of work for you now in the orchard. He'll explain everything to you when we get there.
Thomas: (whistles) I'll come visit you one day whenever I can too, and who knows? We may need you again at the harbor someday.
Trevor: (sigh) That would be wonderful. Thank you for a great day, Thomas.
Thomas: You're welcome. Goodnight, you two. (whistles, puffs away)
Edward & Trevor: Goodnight, Thomas. (Edward whistles and puffs away)
That night, Trevor thought about his new friend Thomas, the harbor, and the Vicar's Sunday School. Then he went happily to sleep, excited to be busy again tomorrow. The next day, not only was he busier than ever, but Percy returned from the Steamworks and was back to work at the harbor.
And that was Thomas and Edward's lost story. I originally wanted this story to be in Adventures of Edward, but I thought it would be better for after Percy Takes the Plunge. You could argue that Edward doesn't get too much time in this story, but Duck doesn't get much time in Gordon Goes Foreign so that doesn't really work. I guess Trevor made his way into this story too and as for if Bertie and Terrence will get stories, the answer is that the prologue's opening was kind of their story. This is a story about the "Eight Famous Engines" not the Twelve Famous Vehicles(including Harold too). I also forgot to mention this in the Prologue, but I'm starting to highlight when the engines speak, just because I think it'll be easier for me and anyone to see when a character is talking and when the narrator is talking. With that, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all in the next chapter when I tackle Gordon Goes Foreign.
