Steve's POV
"Sounds like a hell of a fight, sorry I missed it." Sam said as we were walking up the stairs.
"If I had known it was going to be a firefight I absolutely would have called you." I smiled over at him.
"No, I'm not actually sorry. I'm just trying to sound tough. I'm very happy chasing cold leads on our missing persons case. Avenging is your world. Your world is crazy."
"Be it ever so humble."
"You find a place in Brooklyn yet?" Sam changed the subject as we made our way to the railing over looking the room.
"I don't think I can afford a place in Brooklyn."
"Well, home is home, you know?"
"Yeah... speaking of our missing person... we picked up an enhanced woman who's a part of HYDRA." I told him. He was taking a drink from his beer, then swallowed it, raising his eyebrows.
"Didn't know they were doing human experiments, though to be honest, it doesn't really surprise me. What they did to Barnes? I mean... it's not as if they know how to draw a line."
"Yeah, the other two volunteered for the experiments apparently. But this woman, Celeste, was born like this. She said the word mutant. Never heard of it before."
"Well I guess stranger things have happened... if you can inject a serum, why can't someone be born naturally like that?"
"You're not wrong. I wonder though, we couldn't find too much information on her. Maybe..." I sighed.
"You wonder if she knows Barnes?"
"I do."
"You haven't asked?"
"I just... I don't know..."
"You don't want to give up hope. Or get more upsetting information about his past with HYDRA."
"Am I that obvious?"
"Yes" he laughed, "but you're also a kind person, Steve. You really struggled coming to terms with what happened to him, any other information could do the same. Although, if it were me, I'd ask her. You're just going to keep coming up with more bizarre possibilities if you don't."
"Thanks, man. I think I will do just that. I guess the worst thing that could happen is she doesn't know anything. Who knows, she might be able to give us some good intel on where he could be now."
"Didn't think of that, but possibly. Let me know how it goes?"
"I will, thanks."
"No problems, it's what I do." he smiled "Alright, I've been eyeing that pool table, let's go for another round. This time I'm gonna whoop your ass"
"Oh really?" I laughed.
"Really"
Celeste's POV
I'd been locked in this glass cell for two days. Natasha Romanoff, Black Widow, I soon found out was her alias, had been trying to interrogate me. Barton has also had a go. Like the Captain said, they wanted any information on HYDRA. But I couldn't say anything against them. They've done nothing but be loyal to me. Protect me and teach me. I can't imagine where'd I'd be without them. Without Fischer.
It was evening, and Natasha has mentioned that they were having a party. "Don't get jealous" she smirked as she walked out.
I received 3 meals a day. Water. There was a privacy cubicle for taking care of... business. I was constantly looking at ways to escape. But with this collar, my abilities remained only sparks. Those aren't going to get me far.
About 4 hours pass before I hear footsteps coming down the stairwell. I look up to see the Captain, Steve, walking up to the glass.
"You giving it a go? Come to try your hand at questioning me? Because I gotta tell you, Cap. Your reputation doesn't give me much indication that you'll do any better than your assassin friends. I'm must say, Natasha and Clint are quite intimidating."
"Not intimidating enough it would seem."
"So it would seem." I laugh. I look into his eyes as he tries to hide his smile. Damn this man... "Okay. Hit me with your best shot. Fire away" I giggle once I realise what I said. He gives me a questioning look "Oh sorry, I just realised I quoted a song. Pat Benatar. No, please proceed" I prompt with my hand out to him.
"You're right, I don't think I'd be able to get anything out of you. Not related to this at least."
"Oh? What exactly do you think you'll get out of me?" I ask, crossing my arms after I walk to the glass coming face to face with him.
"Sargent James Buchanan Barnes. Do you know him?"
"I know of him. Not much. Just he was your best friend from childhood. Why would I know more?"
"How about, The Winter Soldier?"
I feel my face drop. My chest got heavy.
"What about him?" I ask.
"What do you know about him?"
"He was one of HYDRA's top trainers."
"You ever meet him?"
"... yeah... I... he was my trainer for a few years... shit... at least 15 years ago? Did a few missions with him. He was 'Soldat' to me though." I whispered the last bit... "I haven't heard anything about him since that whole debacle in DC. I was never told his involvement, but I know they sent him out for that mission. Turns out, he never came back."
"So, no idea as to where he could have gone?"
"I don't know, Cap. Honestly. I actually... many didn't like him, found him too intimidating. Hell, if looks could kill, I can see why. But... he was always so gentle with me. Kind. I considered him a friend."
"You know... he is James Barnes... he was - is, my best friend. HYDRA brainwashed him. Turned him into what he was"
"See, I knew you would do this! I knew you'd try to sell me some bullshit to get me to talk. Soldat isn't your friend. Your friend died, I'm sorry, but it's true."
"Then why did he recognise me? Why would he have saved me if I was his enemy?"
"I can't answer that, maybe he switched to the dark side. Do you guys have cookies?"
"I don't understand why cookies would be relevant in this situation..."
"Sorry, I forgot you're actually 90..." I quipped.
We were silent for a moment, both not looking at each other.
"Okay, I think that's enough for today. Do you need anything?" He gently asked.
"No. Thank you"
"I'll talk to you later..."
I just turned away. Why would he say that...? Why am I sad? I waited until I heard his footsteps on the stairs before I let a tear fall. What kind of mess am I in... is Fischer going to come for me? I looked out to the window. At least I have a view. I could see rain drops on the glass, falling in time with my tears.
About an hour later, I start to hear crashing from above. Damn, they haven't soundproofed too well. When the gunshots start, that's when I start to get worried. What looks to be Tony's suit crashed into the room, and looks at me. Then it begins to advance in my direction. Shit, I'm a sitting duck in here, with no fucking powers.
Then it stops... tilting its head to the side. The doors unlock and the collar around my neck unlocks. I throw it off, and set my hand ablaze, ready to attack if need be.
"I'm setting you free, the twins await your arrival." The robotic voice says to me, telling me where to go.
I walk carefully out of the glass cell, keeping my back to the wall. I look to the window and back to the robot. He was walking back to the entrance, when Steve breaks him in half with his shield. We make eye contact, but I turn and blast through the windows, soaring through the sky to the meeting point.
