SAILOR MOON: A HERO FOR THE 1980S

PROLOGUE

SATURDAY, 2 AUGUST, 1986

EL CENTRO PARK, LA HABRA, CALIFORNIA

1:30 PM

As long as he could remember, Jerry Logue always enjoyed the Corn Festival that was held in La Habra every year. They held it on the first Friday and Saturday of August. He enjoyed the corn, he thought it was probably the sweetest corn he had ever tasted. Every year, he would get an ear, soak it in butter, and salt it. It was, for him, the perfect food. He also enjoyed the Corn Festival parade, it ran down La Habra Boulevard. That was one of the traditions in his mom's family. Every year, Jerry's mom would take him and his sister out for breakfast at Cleary's, and watch the parade from out in front.

After the parade, Jerry rode his Harley-Davidson SS-350 back to his mom's house, and since it was only a few blocks away, walked back to El Centro Park, where the Corn Festival was held. He met up with his mom and sister at the park, where they sold ears of corn, and he had one. After he finished, he and his sister Debra got ride tickets, and went to the midway. Of course, the first chance she got, Debra ditched him to hang out with a friend. That was okay with Jerry, he didn't really want to ride with her anyways. Only problem was, most of the rides didn't allow single riders. However, that was a problem that was about to solve itself.

"Excuse me," a girl said, as Jerry was mentally contemplating how he would most enjoy killing his younger sister.

"Yeah," Jerry said, turning toward the voice he heard. Standing there was a girl who appeared to be Jerry's age, although she was at least a couple inches shorter than he was. She had blue eyes and bluish-black hair that was cut to just about chin length. She was wearing a heather gray T-shirt with "Property of Seattle Mariners" stenciled on front in blue, blue cotton walking shorts, white ankle socks, and white leather high top sneakers with 2 velcro straps around the ankles. If he had to think of words to describe he, the first thing to pop into his head would be "cute as a button".

"I noticed that girl you were with kind of ditched you," the girl said. "And I also know festivals like this, they don't allow single riders on most of the rides. So, would you mind going on some of the rides with me?"

"Sure," Jerry said. "Anyways, I'm Jerry."

"My name is Amy Anderson," the girl said. "I'm visiting from Seattle, I'm staying with my aunt over the summer."

Jerry and Amy went on a few rides, and checked out the marketplace. Later on, they got chili from the La Habra Fire Department. Later that evening, it was time to leave. Jerry and Amy met up with Amy's aunt. "I had a good time," Amy said.

"Me too," Jerry said.

"So where's your car?" Amy asked, when they were about to leave."

"I don't have a car," Jerry said. "I have a motorcycle, but I left it at my mom's house, since she only lives behind Meltebeke Volkswagen, and parking is always a hassle, I walked."

"I'll give you a ride home," Amy's aunt said.

When they got to Jerry's mom's house, which was just the other side of Harbor Boulevard, on the street behind Meltebeke Volkswagen, Amy walked to the door with Jerry. "I really had a good time," Amy said, giving Jerry a kiss as he opened the door.

"Me too," Jerry said.

"Anyways," Amy said, writing something down on a piece of paper and giving it to Jerry, "Here's my number, where I'll be staying for the rest of the summer."

"I'll call tomorrow," Jerry said, writing his own number on a receipt from a fast food place he had in his wallet, and giving it to Amy.

CHAPTER 2: FROM THE EMERALD CITY, THE SAILOR SOLDIER OF WISDOM

MONDAY, 8 SEPTEMBER, 1986

EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL, PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA

7:15 AM

"Another year, just beginning," Usagi Campbell said, as she locked her bicycle to one of the bike racks in the bicycle parking area. As she was locking her bike, Jerry arrived on his Harley-Davidson SS-350, and parked in the motorcycle parking area. As he approached Usagi, he gave her a quick hug, and the two of them went to get their finalized schedules for the first semester.

"Well," Jerry said, as they got their schedules, "it's back to the old salt mines for another year."

"Look at the bright side," Usagi said. "After today, we only have one more first day of school left."

"Here at El Dorado, that is," Jerry said. "Don't forget, there's still college. That is, if I actually do go to college."

"You're not going to college?" Usagi asked.

"I haven't decided yet," Jerry said. "It's either college or the Marines."

"You realize the Marines won't let you keep your mane," Usagi said, mussing Jerry's long hair. "And don't forget that in the Marines, getting shot at is an occupational hazard."

"Even if I do enlist," Jerry said, "there's no guarantee the United States will get involved in a war somewhere."

"There's no guarantee the United States won't get involved in a war somewhere," Usagi said.

"True," Jerry said. "Anyways, see you in history."

That morning, when Usagi got to her first period class(English), she ended up sitting in front of the new girl in class. She was about an inch shorter than Usagi, with bluish-black hair that was cut to chin length and dark blue eyes. She was wearing a short sleeved pink top, black knee length skirt, black nylons, and black flats, and she also wore glasses with round wire rims and lenses.

After school, Usagi only had a little homework, and she managed to finish it in about half an hour. After she finished her homework, she changed Luna's litterbox(a few days after becoming Sailor Moon, Luna hypnotized Usagi's parents into adopting her), and went down the street to Gilman Park, where she and Jerry threw a Frisbee around for a few minutes. After about 15 minutes, Luna, who was leaping from one branch to another, misjudged the distance between two branches, and fell, landing in the lap of Ami Anderson, who was sitting on a blanket in the park, reading a book. Fortunately, she didn't fall that far, just a few feet. "Why hello there, kitty," Amy said, when she saw Luna. "You might be pretending to be a lioness, stalking her prey on the Serengeti, but unfortunately, I'm not a gazelle."

"You okay?" Usagi said, when she saw that Luna had fell into Amy's lap. "My cat didn't hurt you, did she?"

"Not really," Amy said. "She startled me more than anything."

"Well, sorry about that anyways," Usagi said. "By the way, I'm Usagi Campbell, I think you're in a couple of my classes. And since you already met my cat, her name is Luna."

"I thought you looked familiar," Amy said. "I'm Amy Anderson. Usagi sounds like Japanese, but you don't look Japanese."

"I was named after my mom's college roommate," Usagi said. "Her name was Usagi, which is the Japanese word for rabbit."

"Which explains why she's about as big into rabbits as my mom is into pigs," Jerry said. "Anyways, Usagi, remember I told you I met a girl during the Corn Festival last month?"

"You don't mean?" Usagi asked.

"Guilty," Amy said, sheepishly.

"Too bad I didn't know you lived here," Jerry said. "Where exactly do you live, anyways?"

"At the end of Hartford," Amy said. "We moved in back in late May, but we actually only really moved in about a week ago."

"I don't get it," Jerry said.

"Well, it's like this," Amy said. "My mom came out back in May to move everything in, I was going to join her once school got out. Unfortunately, my mom had to go back to Seattle to take care of business, so I stayed with my aunt for most of the summer."

"Wanna hear something funny?" Jerry asked, as he and Amy walked up to Amy's house.

"What?" Amy replied.

"This is where Mike used to live," Jerry said.

"Doesn't look like my mom's home just yet," Usagi said, as she opened the door and went into the house, where she stashed her blanket and book.

"Wanna come meet my dad and stepmother?" Jerry asked.

"Maybe later," Amy said. "I was going back down to the park for a bit."

"I'll meet you and Usagi there," Jerry said. "I have to run home for a minute."

"Okay," Amy said, giving Jerry a little kiss.

When Amy returned to the park, she and Usagi tossed the Frisbee around for a few minutes. After a a few minutes, Amy threw one that went over Usagi's head. Usagi went to retrieve it, and when she did, a demon appeared in the park, and grabbed Amy by the throat. Usagi and Luna heard Amy scream. "I think it's time for you to become Sailor Moon," Luna said.

"You're right," Usagi said, raising her hand in the air. "Pretty Soldier of the Moon, Make-Up!"

"What do you want?" Amy asked the demon, as it held her up by her throat.

"I want your energy," the demon said. "I want it to help my master Queen Metallia to take over this pathetic planet."

"Leave her alone!" Golden Hawk said, appearing from out of nowhere, and delivering a flying kick to the demon's head, causing it to drop Amy.

As Amy fell to the ground, Luna approached her, and for a brief moment, saw the symbol for Mercury on her forehead. "It's her," Luna said, materializing a pen with a blue coin with the symbol for Mercury on the top. "Quick, take this!" Luna added.

"I must be losing my mind," Amy said. "I swear I just heard a cat speak."

"I don't have time for this right now," Luna said. "Amy, I need you to take this pen, hold it up, and repeat after me. Pretty Soldier of Mercury, Make-Up!"

"Might as well," Amy said, picking up the pen. "Pretty Soldier of Mercury, Make-Up!" She found herself transformed, wearing a costume similar to the one Sailor Moon wore, but trimmed in dark blue and aquamarine, shew wore a dark blue visor over her eyes, and her fingernails were painted aquamarine. "Cool beans,": she said, when she saw she had transformed. "I'm a superhero."

"Welcome to the club," Sailor Moon said. "I'm Sailor Moon."

"I guess that makes me Sailor Mercury," Amy said. "Seeing that my powers are based on Mercury."

"And I'm Golden Hawk," Golden Hawk said.

The demon created several copies of itself. "Do all demons have this power?" Sailor Moon asked.

"I'll take care of the carbon copies," Golden Hawk said, unsheathing his staff, and transforming it into a metal handle with a disc at one end, and studded semi-spherical pommel at the other. He pressed a button near the end with the disc, and it emitted a meter long blade of green light. He rushed the copies, and every time he cut one down, two more rose in its place.

"Shouldn't we help him?" Sailor Mercury asked.

"And ruin his fun?" Sailor Moon asked. "But if you want to help him, go ahead."

""Mercury Bubble Spray!" Sailor Mercury said, surrounding the demons with bubbles. The bubbles obscured the vision of the demons, but Golden Hawk could see them perfectly. Still, for every demon he cut down, two more emerged in its place.

"As much as I'm enjoying this," Golden Hawk said, "I think it's high time we end this. I mean, I could kill the carbon copies from now until doomsday, but the only way we're going to finish this is to take out the main demon. Sailor Moon, do that thing you do with your tiara."

"Right," Sailor Moon said, removing her tiara.

"Let me help you out with this," Sailor Mercury said. "Mercury Bubble Spray!" She surrounded the main demon with bubbles, obscuring its vision.

"Moon Tiara Boomerang!" Sailor Moon said, throwing her tiara at the demon, destroying it. When she destroyed the main demon, all the demons Golden Hawk was fighting disappeared.

"Like the Queen song goes," Golden Hawk said, "another one bites the dust."

"I don't know what we would have done without you," Sailor Moon said.

"Well," Golden Hawk said, "Whenever you need me, I'll be there," he added, disappearing in a puff of gold smoke.

"So I guess that makes us superheroes now," Amy said, as she and Usagi transformed back from Sailor Mercury and Sailor Moon, respectively.

"Yeah," Usagi said. "We're a team. Well, us and Golden Hawk."

"I wonder who he is under that mask," Amy said.

"I have a feeling we're going to find out one of these days," Usagi said.

"Anyways," Amy said, "what do you wanna do right now?"

"Wanna go to Jerry's house?" Amy asked.

"You wanna meet your new boyfriend's dad and stepmother," Usagi said.

"That, and ask him who Mike is," Amy said,

"How do you know about Mike?" Usagi asked.

"He told me that I moved into Mike's old house," Amy said.

"Mike was a friend of Jerry's," Usagi said. "I knew him, but we weren't really that close, mainly because we didn't have any common interests. But when Jerry moved in about 4 years ago, he and Mike hit it off, mainly because both of them play guitar. Mike is the one who got Jerry into both Monty Python and the Beatles."

"Jerry likes Monty Python?" Amy asked.

"Yeah," Usagi said. "Don't tell me you like them."

"I love Monty Python!" Amy said. "I've seen Monty Python's Life of Brian about 20 times, and I've seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail about 25 times."
