SAILOR MOON: A HERO FOR THE 1980S

PROLOGUE

MONDAY, 8 SEPTEMBER, 1986

EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL, PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA

7:45 AM

Even though Rae Hinkley was a junior in high school, this was her first day as a student at El Dorado High School, home of the Golden Hawks. She had spent the her freshman and sophomore years at Rosary High School, a private school for girls, that was run by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. About halfway through her sophomore year, Rae began having a crisis of faith, and over the summer, had decided to leave the Catholic Church. In fact, up until that day, Rae had attended Catholic schools exclusively, having gone to Our Lady of Guadalupe School in nearby La Habra from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Rae knew that if she had left the Catholic Church, she would have to attend public school, but Rae didn't mind. There were things about the Catholic Church that didn't sit well with her. Susan Hinkley, Rae's mother, was actually relieved when Rae decided to leave the Catholic Church. Susan wasn't exactly a devout Catholic, but she had "gone through the motions" for her daughter's sake, and was glad to not have to anymore.

Since Rae and her mother moved into the attendance area for El Dorado High during Rae's crisis in faith, Rae went to school there. She didn't really know anyone, seeing as most of her friends attended Catholic schools., She did know one person at El Dorado. Mina Aino. Mina and Rae had known each other since meeting in first grade, when Mina emigrated to the United States from Canada, more precisely, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Rae and Mina weren't best friends, but they were friendly towards each other. However, it was the circumstances surrounding Mina and her family leaving the Catholic Church that sparked Rae's crisis of faith. Mina had gone to public school since about halfway through their sophomore year, and had gone to El Dorado.

"Hey Mina," Rae said, when she saw Mina. "Nice to see a familiar face."

"Morning, eh?" Mina said. "I heard rumors about(which Mina pronounced "aboot") you leaving the Church."

"They're true," Rae said, noting that in the 10 years she had lived in the United States, she managed to not lose one bit of her Canadian accent.

"And don't worry," Mina said. "You'll make plenty of friends here. In fact, I'll introduce you to some of the friends I've made here since I transferred from Rosary."

"That would be great," Rae said. "But you know, there's one thing that seems to amaze me."

"What's that?" Mina asked.

"You've been in this country a whole decade," Rae said, "but you still sound like you just walked off the set of You Can't Do That on Television."

"You know they film that in Ottawa," Mina said. "And I'm from Saskatoon."

CHAPTER 3: THE GIRL WHO PLAYS WITH FIRE

SATURDAY, 13 SEPTEMBER, 1986

FASHION SQUARE 4 THEATER, LA HABRA, CALIFORNIA

4:30 PM

Amy Anderson and Jerry Logue had just gotten out of the movies. They went to see The Boy Who Could Fly, a movie Amy had wanted to see. Jerry hadn't particularly wanted to see it himself, he thought it was more his mom's type of movie. "You know what?" Jerry asked. "I actually liked it, even though I'd rather have seen Aliens."

"That isn't exactly my cup of tea," Amy said.

"Mine neither," Jerry said. "But according to my dad, it's one of the few sequels that's better than the original movie. I saw Alien on TV a few years ago, but to be honest, the only scene I remember is when the alien pops out of that guy's stomach."

"Maybe we will go see it tomorrow," Amy said. "After all, I did drag you to a movie you weren't all that interested in. It's only fair you drag me to see one you want to see."

"But one I did end up liking," Jerry said.

"So you're saying I don't have to go if I don't want to?" Amy asked. "I caught Alien on TV back when I was 10, and it gave me nightmares for a month."

"Let me put it to you this way," Jerry said. "We're not Siamese twins. If you don't want to see Aliens, because you think it's too scary, I'll understand."

"Thanks for understanding," Amy said, hugging Jerry.

"I'll be right back," Jerry said, when they got to the lobby.

"Anything the matter?" Amy asked.

"Nothing much," Jerry said. "Just the combination of a large soda and the fact I sat through every frame of the movie."

"I see," Amy said, understanding what Jerry meant. "I'll meet you right outside.

As Jerry went downstairs, Amy heard screams coming from Fashion Square. At the same time, her communicator went off(Luna had fashioned communicators for her and Usagi). "We got trouble in La Habra," Luna said.

"It wouldn't be at Fashion Square?" Amy asked, as she ducked around the building, to a hidden corner.

"How did you know?" Luna asked.

"I just got out of a movie at the theater there," Amy said. "I can hear the screams."

"Transform and meet Sailor Moon and me there," Luna said.

Amy took out her transformation pen, and held it up. "Pretty Soldier of Mercury, Make-Up!" she said, and transformed into Sailor Mercury. She went to the center of the shopping center, arriving just as Sailor Moon and Luna did. When they arrived, they saw something that would easily blend in at the Mos Eisley Cantina in Star Wars. The creature was attacking the patrons of the shopping center.

"I can't let you do that," Sailor Moon said.

"And who's going to stop me?" the creature asked.

"I'm going to stop you," Sailor Moon said.

"And who the hell are you?" the creature asked.

"I am the Sailor Suited Soldier who fights for Love and Justice!" Sailor Moon said, making several battle poses as she spoke. "I am Sailor Moon, and in the name of the Moon, I'll punish you!"

"And I'm the Sailor Suited Soldier who fights for Love and Wisdom," Sailor Mercury said. "I am Sailor Mercury, and in the name of Mercury, douse yourself with water and repent!"

"I don't know why I have to get my hands dirty fighting the likes of you," the creature said. "Face my minions."

As if in a movie, Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury were surrounded by a bunch of demonic creatures. They rushed the Sailor Soldiers, as if to defeat them by sheer numbers. "Mercury Bubble Spray!" Sailor Mercury said, temporarily disabling a few of the creatures.

Meanwhile, Luna had sensed some type of energy in the shopping center. She went off to find the source of the energy, and arrived at the entrance of Buffum's, just as Rae Hinkley exited the store. As Rae exited, Luna saw, for a split second, the symbol of Mars on her forehead. "That's where the energy came from," Luna said to herself.

Even though Luna was speaking to herself, Rae could hear her. It couldn't be, Rae thought to herself. "I swear I just heard you speak," Rae said, as she picked Luna up. "But you couldn't have spoken, you're a cat."

"I believe, miss Rae Hinkley, that you're going to learn I'm not your garden variety pussycat," Luna said. The shock of hearing Luna speak caused Rae to drop her. As she did, Luna did a backflip in midair, landed on her feet, and picked up a pen with a red coin with the symbol for Mars on it.

"I believe you want me to take this," Rae said.

"Of course," Luna said. "Hold it up, and repeat after me. Pretty Soldier of Mars, Make-up!"

"Might as well," Rae said. "I have a feeling this is the only way this crazy dream is going to make any sense. Pretty Soldier of Mars, Make-Up!" When Rae said that, she was transformed. She was wearing a costume similar to the costumes worn by Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury, but with red and purple trim, as well as purple fingernails. She was also accompanied by a small robot, which resembled a phoenix with yellow, orange, and red feathers.

"You are now Sailor Mars," Luna said. "Your companion is Phoenix One, it's a robot programmed to assist you in your fight against the forces of evil. It's also programmed to only respond to your voice, and the voices of anyone you deem an ally. Now go, your friends need you."

Meanwhile, Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury were fighting the creature's minions. They were holding their own, but only barely. Fortunately, they weren't alone. "Mind if I cut in?" Golden Hawk asked, as he appeared out of nowhere in a puff of gold smoke.

"Be our guest," Sailor Mercury said.

Golden Hawk unsheathed his staff, and transformed it into a blaster pistol. He began firing at the minions, taking them down one at a time.

Meanwhile, Sailor Mars appeared on the scene, along with Phoenix One. "The two girls dressed like me must be my allies. And my gut tells me the ninja is on our side, as well. Phoenix One, help my allies. The two girls in the sailor suits, and the ninja."

Phoenix One flew over the battle, and fired lasers from its eyes at the minions. "What the hell was that?" Sailor Moon asked.

"I don't know," Golden Hawk said. "But it appears to be on our side."

"That's because it is on your side," Sailor Mars said. "As well as I."

"And who are you?" the creature asked.

"I am the Sailor Suited Soldier who fights for Love and Passion," Sailor Mars said. "I am Sailor Mars, and in the name of Mars, I'll chastise you!"

"How many are there of you?" the creature asked.

"As far as I'm concerned," Golden Hawk said, "the more the merrier."

"Mars Fire Soul!" Sailor Mars said, shooting a fireball from the tip of her finger at one of the minions. Soon, between her Fire Soul, Golden Hawk's blaster, and Phoenix One's laser vision, the minions were all destroyed.

Next, they focused on the main creature. "I have an idea," Golden Hawk said, as Sailor Moon removed her tiara for her attack. "Why don't the three of you combine your attack."

"That sounds like a good idea," Sailor Moon said.

"I'm game," Sailor Mercury said.

"Same here," Sailor Mars said.

"Moon Tiara Boomerang!" Sailor Moon said, throwing her tiara.

"Mars Fire Soul!"

"Mercury Bubble Spray!"

The two attacks combined with Sailor Moon's tiara, and the combined attack destroyed the creature. "Looks like the three of us make a pretty good team," Sailor Mars said.

'Don't you mean the four of us?" Golden Hawk asked.

"Four?" Sailor Mars asked. "I only see three of us."

"I think Golden Hawk is implying he's a member of the team," Sailor Mercury said.

"He's got my vote," Sailor Moon said.

"Ditto," Sailor Mercury said.

"I guess that makes it unanimous," Sailor Mars said.

"I guess we know what that means," Sailor Moon said. "That is, Golden Hawk, if you want it."

"I have a gut feeling I'm going to become a member of the team sooner or later," Golden Hawk said.

"Now it's official," Sailor Moon said, transforming back to Usagi Campbell, and putting her right hand out, palm down. "I'm Usagi Campbell."

"Welcome to the team," Sailor Mercury said, transforming back to Amy Anderson, and putting her hand on top of Usagi's. "Amy Anderson."

"I guess that goes for me, as well," Sailor Mars said, transforming back to Rae Hinkley, and putting her hand on top of Amy's. "Rae Hinkley.

"I guess it's only fair to let you know my secret identity," Golden Hawk said, removing his mask. "Jerry Logue," he said, putting his hand on top of Rae's.
