SAILOR MOON: A HERO FOR THE 1980S
PROLOGUE
SATURDAY, 19 JULY, 1986
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA
12:25 PM
Lisa Kino finished packing her clothes, and packed her suitcase, as well as all her other personal belongings, in her uncle's van. "I think you're really going to like Placentia," Daniel Barnes said. "It's close to the beach, and both Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. And maybe this winter, I'll take you skiing, the mountains are only a couple hours out of town."
"Sounds like a great place to live," Lisa said. "I just wish I was moving there under better circumstances."
"I know what you mean," Daniel said. "It's rough losing your mom. Especially since your dad died just after you were born."
"I'm just glad you and aunt Vanessa are taking me in," Lisa said. "Even if it means leaving the town where I grew up."
MONDAY, 8 SEPTEMBER, 1986
EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL, PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA
7:45 AM
Lisa Kino had gotten her final schedule for the fall semester, and had just put her books in her locker, except for the ones she'd need for her first and second period classes. That summer had been a lot for her, first losing her parents, than moving from Stockton, California, where she was born, to Placentia. She got support from her uncle Daniel and aunt Vanessa, as well as her cousin Jimmy, but losing her mother was pretty hard, as it would be for anyone.
CHAPTER 4: SHE RIDES THE LIGHTNING
SATURDAY, 13 SEPTEMBER, 1986
FASHION SQUARE, LA HABRA, CALIFORNIA
5:00 PM
Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, and Golden Hawk had just defeated the latest creature sent by Queen Metallia to attack the people of Orange County, in order to collect energy. After defeating the creature, they transformed back into their civilian identities, respectively, Usagi Campbell, Amy Anderson, Rae Hinkley, and Jerry Logue. As they transformed, Luna, Usagi's cat and the team's mentor, teleported back to Usagi's bedroom, which she used as her base of operations. "I don't know about any of y'all," Jerry said, "but I could really go for Tommy's right about now."
"Where is that?" Amy asked.
"Straight up Idaho," Rae said. "If anyone needs a ride, I have room in my car."
"I have my motorcycle," Jerry said.
"I'll go with Jerry," Amy said. "He and I are kind of on a date right now."
"I'll need a ride," Usagi said.
A few minutes later, they all found themselves at Tommy's Burgers. They all got chili burgers, fries(Jerry got chili cheese fries), and sodas. "So where exactly do your powers come from, anyways?" Usagi asked Jerry.
"I don't know how," Jerry said, "But I can tap into an alien dimension. My powers showed up about 18 months ago, and I'm still learning what I can do."
"So what exactly can you do?" Rae asked.
"Flight, enhanced strength, speed, and agility," Jerry said. "I can also fire blast of energy from my hands, and I can teleport."
"How do you teleport?" Rae asked.
"Anyone read X-Men?" Jerry asked.
"My brother does," Usagi said.
"Well, how I teleport is similar to how Nightcrawler teleports," Jerry said. "I enter the dimension from where I am, and exit it at my intended destination. Only difference, there isn't necessarily smoke whenever I teleport."
"I've seen you use smoke," Usagi said.
"Smoke pellets," Jerry said. "I prefer to make a dramatic entrance or exit. But, if I need the element of surprise, I forgo the smoke pellets."
"So how did you get your powers, anyways?" Rae asked.
"I really don't know," Jerry said. "One morning, I just woke up, and poof, there they were. I've spent most of the last 18 months training myself."
"And does anyone know about your powers?" Usagi asked.
"Just you three," Jerry said. "I mean, what's the point of having a secret identity if everyone knows about it."
SATURDAY, 20 SEPTEMBER, 1986
FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA
8:00 AM
Lisa Kino's hunger overrode her urge to sleep until noon. Of course, there was the smell of bacon being fried coming from the kitchen. She got up, took a quick shower, and got dressed. She went downstairs, where her aunt Vanessa was mixing batter in a bowl, while frying up some bacon. "Good morning," Vanessa said.
"Morning, aunt Vanessa," Lisa said.
"Hope you're hungry," Vanessa Barnes said. "I'm making chocolate malted waffles and bacon for breakfast."
"Don't think I've ever had that," Lisa said.
"You're in for a real treat," Jimmy Barnes said, coming in the kitchen, and making himself a glass of Tang. "My mom's chocolate malted waffles are wicked righteous. Top them with chocolate chips and powdered sugar, pour some melted butter and boysenberry syrup on them, have some bacon on the side, it's the perfect breakfast."
"Sounds good," Lisa said. "Bet it's a lot better than how my mom made waffles."
"How did aunt Cecilia make waffles, anyways?" Jimmy asked.
"Putting butter and syrup on a couple frozen waffles and tossing them in the microwave," Lisa said. "At least, that's how she does it whenever she wants waffles. Me, I prefer to heat them in the toaster, I like them crisp myself."
"If you like them, I made plenty of batter," Vanessa said, as Lisa poured herself a glass of milk, and stirred in some Ovaltine.
Lisa ended up having 3 waffles. She thought at first the combination of chocolate and boysenberry syrup would taste weird, but she thought it was good, yet different. "Definitely better than frozen waffles,": Lisa said.
"So what are you going to do today?" Vanessa asked.
"I'm not sure," Lisa said.
"I'm going to Camelot," Jimmy said. "I've been itching to go to the batting cages. I know it's a few months until baseball season starts, but it's not too early to get in some batting practice."
"That sounds like a good idea," Vanessa said. "Lisa, wanna have a girl's day today?"
"What did you have in mind?" Lisa asked.
"I was thinking of getting our nails done,": Vanessa said. "Afterwards, we can go out for lunch, and maybe see a movie."
"What did you want to see?" Lisa asked.
"I'm not sure,": Vanessa said. "Maybe when we get to the theater, we'll see what's playing, and go from there."
"Sounds like an idea," Lisa said.
Later on, Lisa and Vanessa went to the Brea Mall, where they got manicures and pedicures at the nail salon across from the theater. Vanessa got a French manicure, along with red polish on her toenails, while Lisa got fuchsia polish on fingers and toes. After they got their nails done,
Meanwhile, on the upper floor, Usagi Campbell had just dropped Sam, her younger brother, off at the ice rink for hockey practice. After dropping Sam off at the ice rink, she went to pick up a few things. As she passed the middle of the mall on the upper floor, she glanced down at the center courtyard on the lower floor. For some reason, Usagi realized something didn't seem right. She ducked into a corridor, and activated her communicator. "This is Thumper," Usagi said, using her code name(she chose her codename after Thumper, the rabbit from Bambi, due to the fact her name was the Japanese word for rabbit). "I'm at the Brea Mall, and I have a feeling the shit is about to hit the fan."
"This is Big Bird," Jerry Logue said, over his communicator(he chose his codename after the fact Golden Hawk was a type of bird). "I'm on my way."
"Starbuck here," Amy Anderson said, over her communicator(she chose her codename after a coffee house in her native Seattle). "Coming."
"Ten-four, Thumper, this is Pyro," Rae Hinkley said, over her communicator(she chose her code name after the fact her powers were fire based). "I'll be there before you can say Jack Robinson."
"Bad Luck Charm here," Luna said, as she arrived(her code name was inspired by the superstition of black cats being bad luck). "I sense something here, and it isn't the monster you're going to be fighting."
"Pretty Soldier of the Moon, Make-Up!" Usagi said, transforming into Sailor Moon. She leaped down to the lower floor, where a demon had began attacking shoppers.
"Sorry I'm late," Golden Hawk said, when he showed up 2 seconds later. "Jackknifed big rig just outside Philadelphia had traffic backed up all the way to Poughkeepsie, and I missed my left turn at Albuquerque."
""Think you can be serious for a moment when we fight?" Luna asked, as Sailor Mars and Sailor Mercury showed up.
"What's the point of being a superhero if you can't deliver the odd wisecrack?" Golden Hawk said.
"So what are we up against?" Sailor Mercury asked.
"A demon," Sailor Moon said.
"Who's about to go down like Marvis Frazier did against Mike Tyson," Golden Hawk said.
"I don't think so," the demon said.
Meanwhile, Luna had sensed a source of power somewhere in the mall. She walked around, looking for it. As she passed by Lisa Kino, she sensed it, so she turned around, and for a split second, saw the symbol of Jupiter on her forehead. "It's you," Luna said.
"Who said that?" Lisa asked.
"That would be me," Luna said.
"Don't be silly," Lisa said, looking down and seeing Luna. "You're a cat, and cats don't speak, they just go meow."
"As I've said before," Luna said, materializing a transformation pen with a green disc with the symbol for Jupiter on it, "I'm not your garden variety pussycat. Now take this pen, hold it up, and say Pretty Soldier of Jupiter, Make-Up!"
"What the hell," Lisa said, taking the pen from Luna. "Pretty Soldier of Jupiter, Make-Up!"
Lisa found herself wearing a uniform similar to the ones worn by the other Sailor Soldiers, but in green and pink, and with a pair of green and pink nunchucks attached to her right hip.. "Congratulations," Luna said. "You're now Sailor Jupiter."
Sailor Jupiter joined the battle."Now who are you?" the demon asked.
"They call me Sailor Jupiter," she said. "And in the name of Jupiter, I'll fill you so full of regret, it'll make you numb!"
"In the name of Mars," Sailor Mars said, "I'll chastise you!"
"In the name of Mercury," Sailor Mercury said, "Douse yourself with water and repent!"
"In the name of the Moon,:" Sailor Moon said, "I'll punish you!"
"Eat hot death and die!" Golden Hawk said.
The demon created several copies of itself, which Golden Hawk took on, after transforming his staff into a laser sword with a green blade. "Taste hot plasma!" he said.
"Jupiter Thunder Crash!" Sailor Jupiter said, firing a bolt of lightning at one of the demons as it attacked her. She then unhooked her nunchucks from her hip, and although Lisa Kino had never used nunchucks before, Sailor Jupiter used them as expertly as Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. She charged them with lightning, and used them to attack the demons.
As the other Sailor Soldiers and Golden Hawk were busy with the demon clones, Sailor Moon decided to take care of the main demon. "Moon Tiara Boomerang!" she said, throwing her boomerang at the demon, destroying it. After the battle, and everything going back to normal, the Sailor Soldiers transformed back into their civilian identities. "Hi," Lisa said. "I'm Lisa Kino, I'm kind of new around here."
"I'm Usagi Campbell,": Usagi said. "So where are you from, anyways?"
"Stockton," Lisa said. "I moved here over the summer, after my mom died."
"I'm kind of new here myself,:" Amy said. "Amy Anderson, I moved here from Seattle."
"That's kind of far away,": Lisa said.
"My mom accepted a position as an ER doctor at St. Jude's in Fullerton," Amy said.
"Rae Hinkley," Rae said. "I'm kind of new here, but not really."
"What do you mean by that?" Amy asked.
"Well, I live in Placentia, but until about 6 months ago, I lived in La Habra."
"I've lived here in Placentia most of my life," Usagi said. "I'm Usagi Campbell."
"Isn't Usagi a Japanese name?" Lisa asked.
"It's actually the Japanese word for rabbit," Usagi said. "But it's also used as a name in Japan. My mom named me after her college roommate, her name was Usagi Tsukino. Anyways, if Usagi hadn't died a couple weeks before I was born, she would have been my godmother, that's why I was named after her."
"I've only lived here in Placentia for about 4 years," Golden Hawk said, tossing a couple smoke pellets to the ground at his feet, which concealed his transformation back to Jerry Logue. "But before that, I lived in La Habra. Anyways, I'm Jerry Logue."
