I'm pretty sure they go after Ultron this same night, but I'm letting our Avengers at least sleep. Creative license and all that.
Steve's POV
"Ultron took you folks out of play to buy himself time. My contacts all say he's building something. The amount of Vibranium he made off with, I don't think it's just one thing."
We were gathered in the kitchen of Clint's house. Fury speaking from the bench where he was fixing himself something to eat. I kept looking over to Celeste, who was standing quietly in the corner, watching Tony playing with the darts.
"What about Ultron himself?" I asked, leaning against the wall.
"Ah. He's easy to track, he's everywhere. Guy's multiplying faster than a Catholic rabbit. Still doesn't help us get an angle on any of his plans though."
Tony throws another dart. "He still going after launch codes?"
"Yes, he is, but he's not making any headway."
"I cracked the Pentagon's firewall in high school on a dare." Tony said turning to look at the group.
"Yeah, well, I contacted our friends at the NEXUS about that." Fury picked up his plate and turned to the dining table, sitting to the left of Nat.
"NEXUS?" I'd never heard of this.
Celeste spoke up, "It's the world internet hub in Oslo, every byte of data flows through there, fastest access on earth."
"So what'd they say?" Clint asked Fury.
"He's fixated on the missiles, but the codes are constantly being changed."
"By whom?" Tony asked.
A dart landed right in the bullseye on the board, narrowly missing Tony's face. He jumps and turns to look behind him at Clint. Clint shrugs in response, with a smirk on his face.
"Parties unknown."
"Do we have an ally?" Nat jumped in.
"Ultron's got an enemy, that's not the same thing. Still, I'd pay folding money to know who it is."
"I might need to visit Oslo, find our "unknown."" Tony suggested.
"Well," Nat sighed, "this is good times, boss, but I was kind of hoping when I saw you, you'd have more than that."
"I do, I have you and now Celeste as it appears." he gestures to the shy woman. "Back in the day, I had eyes everywhere, ears everywhere else. Here we all are, back on earth, with nothing but our wit, and our will to save the world. So stand. Outwit the platinum bastard."
Natasha looks up to me, a teasing look on her face. "Steve doesn't like that kind of talk."
I raise an eyebrow. "You know what, Romanoff?" I jokingly threat. She responds with a mischievous smile on her face.
"So what does he want?" Fury asks us all.
"To become better." Celeste answers.
"Better than us. He keeps building bodies." I add.
"Person bodies. The human form is inefficient, biologically speaking, we're outmoded. But he keeps coming back to it."
Natasha looks to Tony, then Bruce. "When you two programmed him to protect the human race, you amazingly failed."
"They don't need to be protected," Bruce said as he picked up the drawing Clint's daughter had handed to Nat, it looked like a butterfly from where I was standing, "they need to evolve. Ultron's going to evolve." He looks up to us.
Nick looks curious. "How?"
"Has anyone been in contact with Helen Cho?" Bruce asks, looking around the room.
Bruce tried to get a hold of Helen Cho, he said he couldn't speak to her. But she was last seen at her lab in Seoul. We all agreed we'd head out in the morning after getting a good nights rest.
After we all ate some dinner, we all went our own ways around the farmhouse. Celeste and I had joined Nat, Clint and Laura in the living room. Celeste was entertaining Cooper and Lila with her powers. Right now she was playing with the water from her glass, it floating between her hands.
"Oh my god, mom, dad! Look what Celeste is doing!" Cooper exclaimed excitedly.
Celeste was now shooting drops of water around her, then throwing them into her mouth as if she were catching grapes.
"Oh can I try to catch one?! Please?" Lila asked.
"Of course" Celeste giggles. "Ready?" Lila nodded and Celeste tossed a drop into the air, Lila catching it in her mouth. She then tossed one to Cooper, who just missed it, the water gently splashing on his cheek. He only laughed joyfully.
"Should we move you into a room with Celeste?" A gentle voice asked from beside me. I could hear the smile in her voice.
I turned to Laura, blushing behind my bashful smile.
"Oh, umm..." I felt slightly caught of guard.
"I can see the way you're looking at her, Steve." She smiled. "There is something, isn't there?"
I looked back at Celeste, admiring her beautiful smile, the way her stunning blue/green hazel eyes lit up as she laughed with the kids. For a moment, I felt truly happy.
"I.. uh, I guess there is something..." I smile back, glancing at Laura.
"Well, from what I've heard of you guys, you least of all could use a slice of happiness." She stood, gently squeezing my shoulder before walking over to Celeste and the kids. "Alright, it's bed time you guys. Say goodnight to everyone."
We all said our good nights to the children, before everyone started to make their way to their rooms. Nat snuck up to my side.
"Looks like I was right, maybe love is in the air after all." She smirked at me.
"You won't leave it alone, will you?"
"No, I can leave it alone. It's just I've tried so hard to get you a date and turns out, all it took was infiltrating a HYDRA base." We both chuckled together. "But I think it's best we get a good nights sleep, so no tossing rocks at Celeste and my window tonight, yeah?"
"Okay mom, I won't try to sneak her out and take her to the milk bar." I laughed, rolling my eyes dramatically.
"Okay, I'll see you in the morning." She turned and walked up the stairs, leaving Celeste and myself behind.
"So... a few people know, I guess." Celeste sighed, touching my arm softly with her hand.
"Yeah... I think mostly everyone will be pleased... I'm not one to have a beautiful lady on my arm too often."
"Likewise, Cap. I don't have women hanging off me either." She joked.
Smiling at each other, we both began to walk up the stairs. I walked her to her room, when she paused at the closed door, turning back to me.
"Well, I guess I'll see you in the morning..."
"Yes, bright and early." I smiled at her.
"Not too early, please."
"Well, I guess I can make an exception for you." I whisper, leaning in and giving her a soft kiss, which she returned.
"Goodnight, Steve." she said after we pulled away from each other.
"Goodnight, Celeste. Don't let Nat kick you too much in her sleep."
"I'll try" she laughed softly, walking through the door, softly closing it behind her.
I couldn't help by smile as I turned back to my shared room with Tony.
The next morning, the team is getting ready to head off on the next part of our mission.
"I'll take Celeste, Natasha and Clint." I tell Tony as we're walking down the hallway to the front door.
"Alright, strictly recon." Tony agrees, "I'll hit the NEXUS, I'll join you as soon as I can."
"If Ultron is really building a body..."
"He'll be more powerful than any of us. Maybe all of us. An android designed by a robot."
"You know I really miss the days when the weirdest thing science ever created was me." I said, a little bit as a joke.
Fury walks up to us. "I'll drop Banner off at the tower. Do you mind if I borrow Ms. Hill?"
"She's all yours, apparently. What are you gonna do?"
"I don't know. Something dramatic, I hope." He responds, then turns away to fly out of here. We all do the same.
