NOTE FROM AUTHOR: As it kind of clashes with the nature of this story, I chose not to mention the events that cause Mina's family to leave the Catholic Church, except to mention the fact several priests were transferred out of the Diocese of Orange.
SAILOR MOON: A HERO FOR THE 1980S
PROLOGUE
TUESDAY, 29 JUNE, 1976
SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN
"But why do we have to go to America anyways?" Mina Aino asked.
"Daddy and I explained it to you," Cecily Aino asked her daughter. "America is known as the land of opportunity, and your father's been given a huge opportunity in California. Besides, we're going to get there just in time for America's birthday,"
FRIDAY, 10 JANUARY, 1986
PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA
"Your father and I had a nice long talk today, and it does affect you," Cecily Aino said, when her daughter Mina got home from school.
"What did I do?" Mina asked.
"It's nothing you did," Cecily said. "Your father and I decided to leave the Church."
"What happened?" Mina asked.
"We found out how the Diocese plans to punish Father Muldoon for what happened," Cecily said.
"Don't tell me they didn't do anything," Mina said.
"They might as well have not done anything," Cecily said. "All they did was transfer him to a church just outside of Boston. If you ask me, they're trying to sweep this under the rug."
"I'll say," Mina said, her tone of voice betraying her anger at the news. "He not only gets away with what he did, he also gets sent back to his hometown. He's lucky it wasn't up to me what happened to him."
"And what would you have done?" Jason Aino asked, as he entered the room where Mina and her mother were talking.
"Stripped him of his priesthood and had him excommunicated from the Catholic Church," Mina said.
CHAPTER 5: THE SUMMIT OF BEAUTY AND LOVE
FRIDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER, 1986
PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA
4:00 PM
"Thanks for coming over to visit," Mina Aino said to Rae Hinkley.
"Thanks for inviting me," Rae said. "So why did you want me to come over, anyways?"
"I just wanted to talk," Mina said. "I mean, I was a bit surprised to see you at El Dorado."
"Well, like you and your family, I left the Catholic Church," Rae said.
"What happened?" Mina asked.
"After Father Muldoon pretty much got away with what he did to your family," Rae said, "I had a crisis of faith. I tried to talk about it, but whenever I did, I was just told to say a bunch of Hail Mary's. It was like they didn't care, so eventually, I just said "screw it", and left the Church.,
SEPTEMBER 27, 1986
BOB'S BIG BOY, PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA
12:30 PM
Jerry Logue and Amy Anderson had just been seated, and were about to order lunch. Jerry ordered a Big Boy combo, with 1000 island on his salad, some 1000 island on the side for his burger, and a chocolate shake, while Amy ordered a Big Boy combo with ranch on her salad, and a chocolate shake. "So how are you liking Southern California so far?" Jerry asked.
"It's not too bad," Amy said. "Although I haven't been able to get Starbucks since I got here."
"If I knew what Starbucks was," Jerry said.
"A coffee house,": Amy said. "They have it in Seattle."
"It's like that when you move to a new area," Jerry said. "You'll have places in your old hometown that they don't have in your new hometown. Kind of like a couple years ago, I spent a week with my uncle Tommy up in Stockton. I liked it there, except for the fact they don't have In N Out there."
"I wish they had that in Seattle," Amy said. "When my aunt first picked me up from the airport, it was about lunchtime, so she took me to In N Out for lunch. Best burger I ever had."
After lunch, Jerry and Amy got on the back of Jerry's Harley-Davidson SS-350, and rode to Camelot & Family Fun Center, in nearby Anaheim. When they got there, they met up with Lisa Kino, who was there with her cousin Jimmy. Jimmy was carrying an aluminum baseball bat and batting helmet, as he was going to the batting cages to hit some balls. "Wanna hit a few with me?" Jimmy asked Jerry.
"No thanks," Jerry said. "I'm here to do the go-karts with my girlfriend, and afterwards, we're going to play some miniature golf. Besides, I'm kind of out of practice when it comes to hitting."
"Been a while?" Jimmy asked.
"I haven't played baseball since I was in Little League, back when I was 12," Jerry said. "I probably could have gone farther, but I kind of lost interest in baseball, at least as a player. I still enjoy going to Angels games."
"I'm more of a Dodgers fan myself," Jimmy said.
"Hey Lisa, wanna ride go-karts and play some miniature golf?" Amy asked.
"Sure," Lisa said.
"Suit yourself," Jimmy said. "I'm going to hit some balls, and then I'm going to hit the arcade. Whenever you're done, meet me at the arcade at Camelot."
"Okay," Lisa said.
The girls and Jerry went to the go-kart track, where they had a couple sessions. Afterwards, they went over to Camelot, where they were going to play miniature golf. However, Jerry got a feeling in his gut that something wasn't right. "I feel it too," Lisa said.
"I think I know what's happening," Amy said. Jerry and Lisa looked in the direction she was pointing, and saw a demon holding a patron of the center by the throat.
"I'll call it in," Jerry said. Activating his communicator, he practically barked out his distress call. "This is Big Bird, there's trouble at Camelot!" he yelled.
"Pretty Soldier of Mercury, Make-Up!"
"Pretty Soldier of Jupiter, Make-Up!"
Jerry dropped a couple smoke pellets at his feet, surrounding himself with gold smoke. When the smoke cleared, he was Golden Hawk. As the three of them transformed, Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars arrived. "Hold it!" Sailor Moon said to the demon. "How dare you attack these people, who want nothing but to have some fun, to let off a little steam after a week of work and/or school?"
"These people exist only to give their energy so that Metalia, my queen, shall reign over this pitiful world forever," the demon said.
"I can't let you do that," Sailor Moon said. "For it is my duty to stop Metalia from taking over this planet."
"And who might you be?" the demon asked.
"I am the Sailor Suited Warrior of Love and Justice!" Sailor Moon said. "I am Sailor Moon, and in the name of the Moon, I shall punish you!"
"I am the Sailor Suited Warrior of Love and Intelligence!" Sailor Mercury said. "I am Sailor Mercury, and in the name of Mercury, douse yourself in water and repent!"
"I am the Sailor Suited Warrior of Love and Passion!" Sailor Mars said. "I am Sailor Mars, and in the name of Mars, I'll chastise you!"
"I an the Sailor Suited Warrior of Love and Courage!" Sailor Jupiter said. "I am Sailor Jupiter, and in the name of Jupiter, I'll fill you with so much regret, it'll leave you numb!"
"I am the Heavy Metal Suburban Warrior for the Nineteen-Eighties!" Golden Hawk said. "You can call me Golden Hawk, and in the name of all that is awesome, I'm about to kick your ass!"
"You talk a good game," the demon said. "Now let me see if you can back it up."
"Things are about to get serious," Golden Hawk said, cracking his knuckles as the demon created multiple copies of itself. Golden Hawk unsheathed his staff, and transformed it into something resembling a large flashlight. He pressed a button, which caused a beam of green light was emitted out of one end. As he activated his laser sword, he rushed the demons. As he did, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars, Sailor Mercury, and Sailor Jupiter jumped into the fray, fighting demons. It wasn't an easy task, as for every demon they killed, two more appeared. Soon, a young man appeared. He appeared to be about a year older than the team, with short black hair, and was wearing a military style uniform. He had on a dark blue jacket with gold trim and gold epaulets, light blue pants with a red stripe down each leg, the pants tucked into knee high black leather boots that were polished to a military shine, as was the black Sam Browne belt he wore. He also had a sword in a scabbard hanging from his right hip.
"So you're the ones giving my queen so much trouble," the young man said.
"This is our world," Sailor Moon said.
"Not for long," the young man said. "Not after my queen takes over this planet."
"I've never actually seen someone have delusions of grandeur before," Golden Hawk said.
"And who are you?" the young man said.
"You can think of me as the Death Star,": Golden Hawk said, "and your ass is Alderaan!"
"You actually think you can defeat me?" the young man asked.
"I don't think we can defeat you,": Golden Hawk said, "I know it."
"The more confident the enemy," the young man said. "the more satisfying when they fall."
"So who are you, anyways?" Sailor Moon asked.
"My name is Endymion," he said.
"I'm Sailor Moon," she said.
"Sailor Mars."
"Sailor Mercury."
"Sailor Jupiter."
"Golden Hawk."
Golden Hawk was about to rush Endymion, when he noticed that he and the Sailor Soldiers were encased in a force field. The girls noticed it too, but Sailor Mars was the first to notice something about the force field they were encased in. "Bad news here," she said. "The force field is shrinking."
"Of course it is," Endymion said. "And soon, it will crush the five of you to death. I'd love to stay and watch, but I have pressing matters. Namely, to prepare to invade this world for my queen once you're all dead." As he said that, Endymion and the demon both disappeared.
"Maybe I can teleport us out," Golden Hawk said, as Endymion and the demon disappeared.
"It's worth a try," Sailor Jupiter said.
"Everyone hold on to me," Golden Hawk said. Once all four Sailor Soldiers were holding on to him, Golden Hawk tried teleporting, but was blocked by the force field. "It was worth a shot," he said.
"I wonder if this field has a weak spot," Sailor Jupiter said.
"Good thinking," Golden Hawk said.
"My visor acts as a HUD," Sailor Mercury said.
"What;s a HUD?" Sailor Mars asked.
"It stands for Head's Up Display," Sailor Mercury said. "Basically, it's similar to what fighter pilots use to check their equipment without having to take their eyes off what's in front of them. I can use it to find a weak spot in the force field."
"And when you do find it," Golden Hawk said, transforming his laser sword into a hand held laser pointer. "When you find it, press the button on the left side, and mark it, so I know where to fire a blast of energy."
Sailor Mercury spent the next minute scanning the force field. "I have some good news, and some bad news," she said.
"I'm guessing the good news is you found the weak spot," Sailor Moon said.
"Yeah," Sailor Mercury said.
"Now what's the bad news?" Golden Hawk asked.
"The weak spot is only on the outside of the force field," Sailor Mercury said.
"Great," Golden Hawk said.
"I believe I can be of assistance," said a female voice with a Canadian accent. Golden Hawk and the Sailor Soldiers looked in the direction the voice was coming from, and saw a young woman, about the same age as the rest of the team. She was wearing a costume similar to the ones worn by the Sailor Soldiers, but trimmed in orange and blue, with orange polish on her fingernails. The young woman had a red ribbon tied in a bow in her long blonde hair, and she was accompained by a white cat. "My name is Sailor Venus, and my feline companion is Artemis."
"You don't happen to have energy projection powers, do you?" Golden Hawk asked.
"Will my Crescent Beam do?" Sailor Venus asked. "It's a beam of energy, in the shape of a crescent moon."
"Definitely," Golden Hawk said. "In a few seconds, you'll see a red dot projected on the force field. Aim at that red dot."
"Will do," Sailor Venus said.
"I guess this is my cue," Sailor Mercury said, activating the laser pointer, and aiming it at the weak spot.
"Here goes," Sailor Venus said, clasping her hands with both index fingers extended. "Venus Crescent Beam!"
She fired a beam of energy from the tips of her index fingers, which hit its mark, destroying the force field.
As the team were freed from the force field, Luna showed up. "Long time no see, kitty," Artemis said, when he saw Luna.
"I wondered whatever became of you,": Luna said.
"It's kind of a long story," Artemis said.
"Anyways," Sailor Moon said, transforming back to Usagi Campbell, "I think introductions are in order. My name is Usagi Campbell, otherwise known as Sailor Moon."
"Sailor Mercury," she said, transforming back to Amy Anderson "But my secret identity is Amy Anderson."
"Sailor Mars," she said, transforming back to Rae Hinkley. "But out of costume, I'm Rae Hinkley."
"Sailor Jupiter," she said, transforming back to Lisa Kino. "But in the real world, I'm Lisa Kino."
"Sailor Venus," she said, transforming back to her secret identity. "But my mom named me Mina Aino."
"You can call me Golden Hawk," he said, as he tossed a couple smoke pellets at his feet, surrounding him with gold smoke. When the smoke disappeared, Jerry Logue was standing there. "But when I'm not wearing my fancy pajamas," he said, "I go by Jerry Logue."
"Mina and I have known each other for about 10 years," Rae said.
"But I don't really know any of the rest of you," Mina said. "I mean, I know Jerry from when we both lived in La Habra, and we have a couple classes together."
"Well this is one time I am definitely glad to see you," Jerry said, hugging Mina.
