SAILOR MOON: A HERO FOR THE 1980S
CHAPTER 8: QUEST FOR THE RAINBOW CRYSTALS #2: TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE
SUNDAY, 5 OCTOBER, 1986
ARTHUR'S COFFEE SHOP, LA HABRA, CALIFORNIA
9:30 AM
Jerry Logue pulled his 1974 Harley-Davidson SS-350 into a parking spot near the entrance, next to his stepmother's 1984 Ford Thunderbird. He and Amy Anderson went in, where Jerry's dad, stepmother, stepbrother, and sister were waiting to be seated. "What's she doing here?" Debbie, Jerry's sister, asked, referring to Amy.
"I invited her," Jerry Lee, Jerry's dad, said. "Like it or not, she is your brother's girlfriend."
A couple minutes later, they were seated, Jerry sitting next to Amy. When they were seated, the hostess asked if anyone wanted coffee. Jerry Lee, Bonnie, Jerry, and Amy got coffee. Jerry Lee took his black, Amy and Bonnie took theirs with cream and sugar, Jerry took his with sugar, while Debbie and Steven got hot chocolate. When they ordered, Jerry Lee got steak and eggs(scrambled), with O'Brien potatoes(breakfast potatoes with onion and bell peppers), white toast, and an Arthur's OJ(similar to an Orange Julius), Bonnie got sausage and eggs(scrambled) with plain potatoes, sourdough toast, and a fresh squeezed orange juice, Jerry got country fried steak and eggs(over easy), with plain potatoes, biscuits with a side of gravy, and a fresh squeezed orange juice, Amy got bacon and eggs(over easy) with plain potatoes, English muffin, and an Arthur's OJ, Debbie got bacon and eggs(scrambled) with plain potatoes and pancakes, and an Arthur's OJ, and Steven got bacon and eggs(over medium) with O'Brien potatoes, biscuits with a side of gravy, and a fresh squeezed orange juice.
After breakfast, Jerry and Amy went back home, and to Gilman Park, where they lay out on a blanket and talked. "I get the feeling Debbie doesn't like me," Amy said.
"It's not you, it's her," Jerry said. "Debbie can be a real bitch sometimes, just ask Mina. Anyways, I have no idea why, but Debbie has never liked any of my female friends. Not you, not Mina, not Usagi. I mean, don't get me wrong, she's my sister and I love her, but somehow I have a feeling that she and I are going to wind up estranged when we get older."
"She is your sister," Amy said.
"I know," Jerry said. "Trust me, I'm not looking forward to having to cut her out of my life, but I'm afraid one of these days, I may not have a choice."
"So how do you like it here in Southern California so far?" Jerry asked.
"I like it here," Amy said. "I find it a lot easier to make friends here than in Seattle."
"You do?" Jerry asked.
"I didn't have a lot of friends in Seattle," Amy said. "I spent most of my time studying, the other kids thought I was kind of a stuck up braniac. Of course, that also meant no boys were ever interested in me."
"I never thought of you as a stuck up braniac," Jerry said. "In fact, when I first laid eyes on you, know what my first impression was?"
"No," Amy said. "What was your first impression of me?"
"Cute as a button," Jerry said, kissing Amy on the lips.
"I never thought my first boyfriend would be a rebel like you," Amy said.
"I'm not really a rebel," Jerry said. "I mean, I have long hair, I have my ear pierced, I ride a motorcycle, I listen to heavy metal and hard rock, and I wear a leather jacket. But I'm also a B student, I have a part time job, and most people think I'm a good kid. I may have a rebellious streak, but I'm not a rebel."
"But you're still not the kind of boy I imagined my first boyfriend would be," Amy said.
"To be honest," Jerry said, "I never imagined I would ever have a girlfriend like you. Granted, first time I saw you, I did think you were cute."
"But you have had girlfriends before," Amy said.
"Not that many," Jerry said. "Actually, only two official girlfriends."
"Official girlfriends?" Amy asked.
"You know that Mina was my girlfriend for a short time just after she transferred to El Dorado from Rosary," Jerry said. "And during my freshman year, there was this girl, Cathy, she and I were boyfriend and girlfriend for a short time. Of course, there was Usagi. She and I were never officially boyfriend and girlfriend, but we did go on a few dates, and she was actually my first kiss."
"Oh?" Amy asked. "So what happened?"
"Math class, back in seventh grade," Jerry said. "The last day before Christmas vacation, we had a test, so no homework, since we didn't have a lesson. Halfway through, the lead in my pencil broke, so I went to the pencil sharpener. Anyways, Mr. Bradford had hung a sprig of mistletoe right over the pencil sharpener, and I happened to be standing directly underneath it. Usagi was at the pencil sharpener herself, she needed to sharpen her pencil as well. She noticed me standing underneath the mistletoe, so she gave me a kiss."
"That's...," Amy said.
"I feel it, too," Jerry said, as they got up and ran to the other end of the park, near the Treeview Place entrance, Jerry activating the emergency alarm on his communicator.
"Endymion," Amy said, as they arrived to where Endymion was confronting Julie and Traci Brewster.
"That's the son of a bitch who turned me into Red Tail," Jerry said, as he tossed a couple smoke pellets to the ground at his feet, turning him into Golden Hawk.
"Pretty Soldier of Mercury, Make-Up!"
As the rest of the team arrived, Endymion fired a beam of black energy from his black crystal, which drew an orange crystal from the band of flesh that joined their bodies. This time, Endymion managed to grab the crystal for himself, as Julie and Traci were transformed into a 2 headed monster. "I got what I came for," Endymion said, pocketing the crystal. "Double Heather, destroy them." he added, as he disappeared.
"Remember, this creature is just two normal people," Golden Hawk said, transforming his staff into a blaster, which he set on stun.
"Two people?" Sailor Moon asked.
"Whoever they were before Endymion transformed them are Siamese twins," Sailor Mercury said. "I saw where they're joined."
"And if you don't want us to harm that thing, why did you transform your staff into a gun?" Sailor Mars asked.
"It's a blaster," Golden Hawk said. "A laser gun, and I have it set on stun. I just want to help subdue this thing, so Sailor Moon can do whatever it is she did to turn me back to normal when I got turned into Red Tail."
"Jupiter Thunder Crash!" Sailor Jupiter said, throwing a ball of lightning at Double Heather, as Golden Hawk fired his blaster at it.
"Mars Fire Soul!" Sailor Mars said, shooting a fireball from her finger at Double Heather, as Phoenix One fired several low powered blasts of energy from its eyes.
"Mercury Hailstorm Barrage!" Sailor Mercury said, as Double Heather was assaulted by a spray of hailstones.
"Venus Love-Me Chain!" Sailor Venus said, using her chain as a lasso, snaring Double Heather.
"Let me help," Golden Hawk said, transforming his staff into a titanium rope, using it to lasso Double Heather. "Sailor Moon, now!"
"Moon Healing, Escalation!" Sailor Moon said, firing a beam of white energy from her Moon Stick, which transformed Double Heather back into Julie and Traci Brewster.
"What happened?" Julie asked. "Last thing we remember, we're lying on a blanket in the park, and this weird guy in a military uniform shoots a beam of black energy at us."
"His name is Endymion," Golden Hawk said. "He turned me into a bird yesterday."
"Why did he target us?" Traci added.
"Same reason he targeted me," Golden Hawk said. "You must have been hosts of one of the Rainbow Crystals. Unfortunately, I can't say anything more about it."
"That's okay," Julie said. "Traci and I are just glad to be back to normal."
"That is," Traci said, "what passes for normal for the two of us."
"So what's normal for the two of you?" Sailor Jupiter asked.
"Being Siamese twins," Julie and Traci said in unison.
Later on, the team met at their headquarters. Usagi Campbell's house had a 3 car garage, and since when her parents first moved in when the housing tract was built back in 1976, they only needed room for 2 cars, they converted the space for the third car into a room, which Usagi and her friends used as a hangout, calling it the clubhouse. Now that she and her friends were a team of superheroes, she decided to use the clubhouse as their headquarters. "The bad news is," Jerry Logue said, "Endymion has the Orange Rainbow Crystal."
"I have a feeling there's some good news to go along with the bad," Lisa Kino said.
"There is," Jerry said. "I have the Red Rainbow Crystal."
"Where is it?" Rae Hinkley asked.
"Jerry hid it in the dimension he taps into for his powers," Usagi Campbell said.
"Why would he hide it there?" Lisa asked.
"I think I know why," Mina Aino said. "Endymion would need all 7 crystals to form the Silver Millennium Crystal, right?"
"He would indeed," Luna said.
"Jerry, you're the only one who can access Hammerspace, right?" Mina asked.
"Pretty much," Jerry said. "And that includes Endymion."
"So even if Endymion took possession of the five remaining crystals, the ones he has are pretty much useless to him," Mina said. "So Jerry hiding the one crystal he has someplace where Endymion can't get to it is his way of making sure Metalia can never use the Silver Millennium Crystal. I also think there's another reason he hid it in Hammerspace."
"Why's that?" Rae asked.
"Put yourself in Endymion's shoes for a second," Mina said. "If I were Endymion, and I knew one of my enemies was to only in possession of the one item Metalia needed to conquer the universe, but was hiding it in the one place where he's the only person who can access it, I would think twice about killing him. So I'm thinking Jerry hid it in Hammerspace as an insurance policy."
"That's some pretty smart thinking," Artemis said.
"I have to agree with our feline friend," Jerry said. "Too bad I didn't think of that myself."
"You didn't?" Amy Anderson asked.
"Only thing I was thinking of was putting it in the one place where Endymion couldn't get it," Jerry said. "I never considered for a second that knowing I had the crystal in the one place only I could access it would be the thing that keeps him from killing me. Now there's one question I know is on all our minds. Who's the next victim?"
"It could be anyone," Lisa said.
"For all we know," Amy said, "one of us could be next."
"I don't think it's any of us," Usagi said, holding the Moon Stick.
"Why do you say that?" Amy asked.
"Look at the red jewel between the crescent moon and the handle," Luna said. "If one of the hosts were in this room ,the jewel would be glowing, and it's not."
