SAILOR MOON: A HERO FOR THE 1980S
CHAPTER 9: QUEST FOR THE RAINBOW CRYSTALS #3: THE GIRL WHO SAW THE FUTURE
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1986
EL DORADO HIGH SCHOOL, PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA
3:15 PM
Jerry Logue just wanted to get home. After school got out, he had a short chat with one of his teachers, he just needed some clarification on an upcoming assignment. He then went to his locker, to get the books he needed for his homework. Fortunately for him, what little homework he had would take him an hour at the most. As usual, the pep squad was working on a routine in front of the office, as they did a couple days a week after school. As he passed by the office, one of the cheerleaders came up to him, and gave him a kiss. What the fuck was that all about? Jerry thought to himself. I know she's seen that I already have a girlfriend. He put it out of his mind as he went to the boy's locker room and got his helmet out of his gym locker, and went to his motorcycle in the parking lot.
As Jerry put his helmet on and got on the back of his motorcycle, he wondered to himself what had just happened, and why. He put the kickstand up, kick-started his bike, revved the engine, and put it into gear. He rode off to the exit to the student parking lot. Just as he pulled up to the exit and stopped at the stop sign, a black Chevrolet pickup truck sped by at close to 70 MPH, nearly 3 times the legal speed limit for that particular stretch of Valencia Avenue(as that particular stretch was directly in front of a school, and students would be present as school had just gotten out 20 minutes earlier, the legal speed limit in California would be 25MPH), followed by several police cars, divided between the Anaheim, Placentia, Brea, Buena Park, La Habra, and Fullerton police, as well as the Los Angeles and Orange County Sheriff's Department, as well as several California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers, all with lights and sirens going. Fuck a duck, Jerry thought to himself. If that girl hadn't kissed me, at the speed that Chevy truck was going, I wouldn't have stood a chance.
When Jerry got home 15 minutes later, his stepmother Bonnie was watching the news, they were talking about a breaking story, a black Chevrolet pickup had been involved in a hit-and-run accident with a pedestrian near Knott's Berry Farm. The car had led law enforcement on a chase that ran through the cities of Anaheim, Buena Park, Brea, Fullerton, Placentia, La Mirada, and La Habra, finally coming to an end a few blocks from El Dorado High. "Holy shit," Jerry said," watching live footage of the pickup crossing the railroad tracks, and being hit by a freight train, which killed the driver instantly.
"Is there anything wrong?" Bonnie asked.
"I saw the chase on my way home from school," Jerry said. "It passed right by El Dorado just as I was leaving the parking lot. I really don't want to think of what would have happened if I had pulled out of the parking lot 2 seconds earlier."
Jerry went up to his room, and did his homework, finishing up about 45 minutes later. "Bonnie tells me you had a close call today," Jerry Lee, Jerry's dad, said, coming into Jerry's room.
"You heard about that police chase today?" Jerry asked.
"You mean, that guy who hit a pedestrian over by where your aunt Carolyn's parents live?" Jerry Lee replied.
"Yeah, that one," Jerry said. "I had to talk to Mrs. Landis, nothing major, I just needed her to clarify a couple things. Anyways, as I was about to pull out of the parking lot, this guy in a black Chevy truck comes speeding down Valencia Avenue like a bat out of Hell, followed by several black and whites, as well as a couple Chippie bikes, all with lights and sirens going. Let's just say I really don't want to think about what would have happened if that girl hadn't kissed me, and leave it at that."
"I'm just glad you're okay," Jerry Lee said. "I'd rather not think about what could have happened myself. I just want to know why that girl kissed you."
10 minutes later, Jerry was reading the latest issue of Watchmen, when Bonnie knocked on his bedroom door. "There's a girl here to see you," Bonnie said.
"I'll be right down," Jerry said, getting up from his bed and putting on his white Chuck Taylor high tops. He went downstairs, and in the front room, sitting on the couch, was the girl who kissed him. "Hello Jerry," the girl said. "My name is Staci Abbot, and if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm the girl who kissed you after school."
"How did you know my name?" Jerry asked. "And, for that matter, how do you know where I live?"
"If I told most people what I'm about to tell you," Staci said, "they'd probably ask me what I was smoking. Of course, the next question a few of those people would have is where they can get some for themselves, but that's beside the point. The truth is, I have the power of clairvoyance, I can see into the future. Not that far into the future, usually just a few minutes, but at the most, a couple days. Some things I can change, others are already set in stone. When you passed by the office, I saw you get killed when your motorcycle got hit by that truck. Fortunately for you, that was something I was able to change. I just needed to keep you from getting on your motorcycle for two seconds."
"That's why you kissed me?" Jerry asked.
"I had to improvise," Staci said. "Kissing you was the first thing I could think of. I do know Amy Anderson is your girlfriend. At least, for now, she is. But like I said, I had to think on my feet. It's not like I make a habit of kissing boys I don't know. But this isn't about me kissing you, although I know this isn't the last we'll talk about this. Anyways, what I do want to talk about has to do with why I kissed you."
"You kissed me to keep me from getting killed," Jerry said. "Because you have the ability to see into the future."
"But I never told you why I have that power," Staci said. "It's because I'm the host of the Yellow Rainbow Crystal. I know that sometime in the next few days, some creep named Endymion is going to use his Black Crystal to draw it out of my body. Fortunately for you, your friend Usagi Campbell is going to nab it before Endymion can take it for himself. Actually, not your friend Usagi, but her alter ego, Sailor Moon. Yeah, I know all about you guys. You're Golden Hawk, Usagi Campbell is Sailor Moon, your girlfriend Amy Anderson is Sailor Mercury, Rae Hinkley is Sailor Mars, Lisa Kino is Sailor Jupiter, and Mina Aino is Sailor Venus. Anyways, Endymion is going to draw the Yellow Rainbow Crystal from me, and transform me into a monster. After that, my vision into the future goes blank. I don't know if Sailor Moon uses her Moon Stick to transform me back to myself, or you and your friends are forced to kill me. Just do me one favor, though."
"What's that?" Jerry asked.
"If you are forced to kill me," Staci said, "please make it as quick and painless as humanly possible."
"I just hope it doesn't come to that," Jerry said.
"Me too," Staci said.
"Just stay on those pretty pedicured toes of yours," Jerry said.
"I don't paint my nails that often," Staci said, "but when I do, I only do my fingernails. But I do get what you're saying."
"Good," Jerry said. "Anyways, I think the team and I could use your powers."
"How's that?" Staci asked.
"I'll let you know in a minute," Jerry said, activating his communicator. "Big Bird calling Thumper/"
"This is Thumper," Usagi Campbell said, over Jerry's communicator.
"Come over to my house right away," Jerry said. "And bring Bad Luck Charm, while you're at it."
Five minutes later, Usagi arrived, along with Luna. "So what is this all about?" Usagi asked.
"Usagi, this is Staci Abbot," Jerry said. "Staci, this is Usagi Campbell."
"Otherwise known as Sailor Moon," Staci said.
"How did you know that?" Usagi asked.
"Staci has the power of clairvoyance," Jerry said. "She can see into the future. In fact, she saved my life earlier today."
"I kissed him as he was leaving school this afternoon," Staci said.
"And how did that save his life?" Usagi asked.
"By delaying my leaving the parking lot by a couple seconds," Jerry said. "Caused me to avoid getting hit by that guy who was chased by the cops after getting into a hit-and-run over by Knott's Berry Farm."
"I saw the footage on channel 7," Usagi said.
"I figured out how someone with her powers could be helpful to the team," Jerry said.
"How's that?" Usagi, Luna, and Staci asked in unison.
"She can see things before they happen," Jerry said. "She can let us know where and when something's about to go down, we can be there before it does."
"If she can see the future," Usagi said, "how can we be there before something goes down?"
"Simple," Jerry said. "We give her a communicator. That's why I asked you to bring Luna."
"I think it's a good idea," Luna said.
"You're taking the fact my cat speaks a lot better than I did at first," Usagi said.
"Clairvoyant, remember?" Staci asked. "I know who all of you are, I'm also aware that both you and Mina Aino have cats that are capable of human speech."
"Anyways," Luna said, doing a backflip in the air, causing a communicator to materialize, "I think it may be to our advantage to know when something's going to happen, so we can be there before it does. Staci, put that communicator on, and think of a code name."
"I already have one," Staci said. "Oracle. You're Bad Luck Charm, on account of you being a black cat, your feline counterpart Artemis is Gato Blanco, which is Spanish for white cat, Usagi is Thumper, after the rabbit in Bambi, Jerry is Big Bird, after the character from Sesame Street, Amy Anderson is Starbuck, after a coffee house in Seattle, Rae Hinkley is Pyro, on account of her powers being fire based, Lisa Kino is Sparky, on account of her powers being lightning based, and Mina Aino is Maple Leaf, on account of her being from Canada. And now, I'm Oracle, on account of the fact I can see into the future."
"That's one good thing about your powers," Jerry said. "I don't need to explain stuff like codenames or anything."
"I can't see everything, though," Staci said. "And even when I can, I can't always predict exactly when they'll happen."
"Nobody's perfect," Jerry said. "Anyways, if you see something about to go down, feel free to contact me or Usagi."
"Will do," Staci said.
About 15 minutes later, Staci arrived at home. Even without her clairvoyance, she was able to sense something wasn't right. She activated the alarm on her communicator "I know you're there, Endymion," Staci said. "And I know why you're here. You're here because I'm in possession of the Yellow Rainbow Crystal."
"I see there's no getting anything by you," Endymion said, pointing his black crystal at Staci, and firing, the beam, drawing the Yellow Rainbow Crystal from her, just as Golden Hawk and the Sailor Soldiers arrived. With a speed not even he knew he possessed, Golden Hawk grabbed the Yellow Rainbow Crystal, and hid it in Hammerspace. "No matter," Endymion said. "Since I have one of the Crystals, the two you have are just about as worthless as the one I have."
"I just may have to kill you for it," Golden Hawk said.
"Or I may have to kill you for the ones you have," Endymion said, as he disappeared.
Staci was transformed into a demonic professor, in cap and gown. "I don't need to see into the future to know I'll destroy you," the creature said.
"Not if we can help it." Sailor Moon said.
The Sailor Soldiers used their attacks on the creature, but weakened, as they didn't want to harm or kill it, but to slow it down, and weaken it, so Sailor Moon can heal it.
"Venus Love-Me Chain!" Sailor Venus said, using the chain as a lasso to hold the creature.
"Jupiter Lightning Lasso!" Sailor Jupiter said, using a lasso made of lightning to hold the creature.
"Mercury Fog Surround!" Sailor Mercury said, using her fog to obscure the creature's vision.
"Mars Fire Surround!" Sailor Mars said, using her flames to hold the creature in place.
"Set for stun!" Golden Hawk said, transforming his staff into a blaster, and firing at the creature.
"Moon Healing Escalation!" Sailor Moon said, transforming the creature back to Staci Abbot.
Later that evening, Jerry was listening to Love Gun by KISS, and playing along on a cheap copy of a Gibson Explorer. As he was working the solo in "Shock Me", he heard a knock at his bedroom door. "Come in," he said.
"We need to talk," Amy Anderson said, as she entered the room.
Jerry knew from the tone of her voice she was about to break up with him. Let's get this over with, he thought to himself. "What's up?" he asked.
"I think you know why I'm here," Amy said.
"You're breaking up with me," Jerry said.
"It's not because of what happened earlier today," Amy said. "I heard about Staci Abbot kissing you, and from what I heard, she kissed you, and you weren't expecting it. Actually, last weekend, I realized I had feelings for someone else, and today, I finally let her know how I feel."
"Don't you mean him?" Jerry asked.
"No," Amy said.
"I feel the same way about Amy as she feels about me," Lisa Kino said, as she entered Jerry's bedroom, and took Amy by the hand.
"I think you two need to leave," Jerry said.
"Please don't get upset," Amy said.
"I'm not upset," Jerry said. I just need to be alone for now, to wrap my head around this."
