AN: Time for Chapter 2 of this one-shot collection, with a slightly longer and slightly less fluffy than before. Just a note, all of these stories are co-written by Silver The Archer. Very good author I must say.
Also, if you haven't read my previous story, The Bat, The Crane, and The Crow, this won't make sense. My advice is read that before this to get the full picture.
All good? Then let's go.
"I'm telling you, babe. You don't need to come."
Babs felt like it was the hundredth time she had told Kara that. She had told her it when she mentioned she was going there a few days ago. She said it again during their date at the fair. She even said it when they were at the latest Pit Roach concert. And yet, Kara was still walking with her and clutching onto her arms as if she let go, Babs would die.
"Yeah, but I want to come," Kara replied as they continued walking down the street.
Babs groaned as she looked at Kara. "You're worried about me, aren't you?"
Kara just raised an eyebrow. "And I shouldn't be?" She held her tighter. "You're my girlfriend. And the guy you want to talk to is a psycho. He hurt you the last time you met."
Babs rolled her eyes. "That's kinda the reason I want to go alone," she said. "I don't want you trying to break the window separating us and him and his nose."
Kara just scoffed. "I'll be fine. I just don't want him making you sad again. Or worse…"
Babs just smiled as she wrestled out of Kara's grip. "Okay, first of all, I doubt Jonathan could make fear toxin in prison. Second of all, I'm strong. I'm emotionally sound. Two qualities of a great hero. I'll be fine with Jonathan." She folded her arms. "Sides, you can do something you want to do. Y'know, like going to the Lazarus Pit, getting some headphones, or…"
She trailed off as soon as she saw Kara staring at her. "You're not going to be swayed, are you?"
"Nope."
Babs groaned. "Fine." She continued walking as Kara trailed her. "Just… don't lose your temper."
Kara smirked. "Babs, relax. Have I ever lost my temper when I'm with you?"
Babs just stared at her.
"... Good point."
Soon, they were outside the building. Metropolis Juvenile Detention. Babs sighed. Here we go. No chickening out now. With that thought, Babs and Kara walked into the building and walked up to the desk. The lady at the front placed down her magazine.
"Can I help you?" She asked.
"Oh, uh, yeah," Babs said. "I'm… Barbara Gordon. I'm here to see Jonathan Crane."
The lady muttered 'Scarecrow, huh?' under her breath as she picked back up her magazine. "Alright then. We'll alert him." She grabbed a phone, dialled a number and held it up to her ear. "Yo, Crane. Visitor's here."
Babs held up her hand. "Oh, and I've brought a friend."
The woman turned to them. "That girl? OK, but I'm gonna need her name."
"Kara Danvers."
The woman mouthed a 'thank you' as she held the phone up to her ear. "She's got a friend. Name's Kara Danvers." A brief pause passed. "OK. They'll be seeing you soon." She placed the phone down. "You can go now."
Babs smiled. "Thanks." With that, she and Kara made their way to the door and down the hallway. They passed by a few cells, which contained some inmates. Some were picking at their fingernails, and a few others were working out. Babs just decided not to look at them. She wasn't there for any of them. She was there to finally talk with her former friend.
Soon enough, they reached the place they were supposed to be at. Babs took the seat in front of one stall, placing her hand on the phone. She looked back at Kara, who was leaning against the wall.
"Last chance, Kara," Babs said.
"Nope. I'm not leaving."
Babs rolled her eyes. "Come on, Kara. Surely there's something else you wanna do? I'm sure there's one cinema where Summer of Danger VIII: Return of the Swamp Slicer isn't sold ou-"
"Ahem."
Babs froze when she heard the voice. Seeing that Kara's eyes had widened, she knew it was the guy they were here for. Turning around, she came face to face with him. Jonathan Crane.
Needless to say, he looked… better than she was expecting. Even since he went to jail, Babs wondered how well he'd do. Seemingly, he was doing pretty well. His hair was a little messier, and his uniform was a little scuffed up, but he looked practically no worse for wear.
Babs slowly raised the phone up to her ear, smiling awkwardly. "Oh. Um… Hi, Jonathan."
Silence. Jonathan only stared at her, an emotionless look on his face. Up close and personal, she saw the changes that prison had made a little more clearly. He'd always been pale, but now he looked almost unhealthy, with dark circles under his eyes. The eyes in question stayed fixed on her and she couldn't help but think about how those eyes used to light up with passion when talking about his science project (she felt her stomach turn at the thought) or how they seemed ready to catch fire when he was angry. Now they looked dead.
Babs's smile faltered a little. "Soooo… How's jail?"
Jonathan just shrugged. "It's… fine." His voice had gotten a little raspier than it was before. "I mean… it's not great, but not as horrible as I thought. I mean… I've met a new friend."
Babs's eyes widened. "You have?" She couldn't help but find that interesting. "Who is it?"
Jonathan tapped his fingers against the table, staring off into space. "His name's Waylon Jones. You might have seen him. He's the big crocodile guy. At first, I thought he'd eat me. But we actually became friends. Heck, the worst he did to me was eat my lunch the first time we talked."
Babs couldn't help but smile. In spite of everything, she was happy that Jonathan wasn't at threat of dying.
"Well, that's good," she said.
Jonathan smiled. A small smile, but at least it was there. "Yeah, it is." Then, just as quickly as he smiled, he frowned, raising an eyebrow. "Uh… quick question?"
Babs blinked. "Yeah?"
"Why's your friend here?"
Babs turned around, seeing Kara. She was currently munching on a burger that she had gotten on the way there. When Kara saw her, she waved, smiling.
Babs turned back to Jonathan. "Oh, well… she insisted that she'd come with me when I came to visit you."
Jonathan's confused face didn't change. "Her? She was the only one? The hippie girl or the Beecher kid I can get, but her? She doesn't seem like the… type. You know what I mean?"
Babs felt anger stir inside of her. Jonathan couldn't just say that stuff. He didn't know Kara. Was this about her making that Ichabod joke when they first met? If that was the case, then Jesus.
Before Babs could say anything, she felt the phone be snatched out of her hand. "Look dude, I'll have you know two things. One: you can't really judge me. Y'know, because you barely know me and you spend your spare time gassing innocent people. And two: she's my girlf-"
Babs quickly snatched the phone back as her face burned. "Kara!" She whispered through gritted teeth. "I said I could handle this!"
Kara frowned. "Sorry." She walked back over to the wall, folding her arms with a dour look on her face. Babs frowned as well. She knew that she just wanted to keep her safe, but she wished Kara would trust her more. Even then, she did understand her point of view.
Holding the phone up to her ear again, she noticed the shocked look on Jonathan's face. "Uh…" Babs said. "So, I just want to know ho-"
"Did she try to say 'girlfriend'?"
Babs's eyes widened. "Uh, yeah."
Jonathan's eyes narrowed. "Huh. Never thought of it, but I suppose that makes sense." His tone wasn't friendly. In fact, it was almost a bit aggressive.
Babs glared at him. "Do you have a problem with that?" A thought crossed her mind. "Wait, is it because we're both-"
Before she could finish, Jonathan's annoyed looking face quickly turned into one of shock. "What?! No! That's not it!"
Babs narrowed her eyes. "Then what?"
Jonathan stuttered as he struggled to find the right words. Eventually, he groaned, placing a hand to his forehead. "Look, I don't have a problem with it. Especially not because you're both girls. It's just…" He trailed off, awkwardly fiddling with his hands.
Babs continued staring at him. "I'm waiting."
After a few seconds, Jonathan sighed. "Look, it's just… do you think you deserve this?"
Now Babs was very confused. What was he on about? "Look, I'll have you know that Kara means the world to me. She's really good to me, she's nice, and she knows how to have a good time. If you're trying to imply she's not good enough for me, you're so wrong."
Jonathan sighed. "I'm not saying that Kara's a bad girlfriend. I hardly even know her. I'm just saying… well, I mean… After what you did-"
Okay, now Jonathan was making no sense. At this point, Babs was seriously considering just getting up and leaving. But, she had made the decision to give a proper visit. Plus, she genuinely wanted to know what the heck he was talking about.
"Jonathan, what do you mean?"
Jonathan groaned as he fixed his gaze on Babs. "You're really going to make me just say it, are you? Fine." His already angry expression grew angrier. "You're a bad person, Barbara."
Babs's eyes widened. What? She definitely wasn't expecting that.
"H-How?" Babs asked.
Jonathan scoffed. "'How?' I'd expect you'd know after what happened at Sweet Justice. You sided with the people quite literally pushing me around."
Babs glared back. "I did not. I was telling you to not just attack people!"
Jonathan rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah, I'm sure. I also remember you assumed I didn't give a crap about Barry, when I clearly did."
"But you didn't care enough," Babs hissed. "You were more concerned about your dumb project!"
"It wasn't dumb!" Jonathan shouted. "Anyways, you also wanted to take me to the police!"
"To explain yourself!" Babs said, her voice cracking from pure frustration. "It wasn't to arrest you or-"
"Yeah right," Jonathan interrupted. "You literally said I should remain a pushover. All because I made one mistake. That's your problem. You stick by people and be their friend, but when they slip up once-"
"That's not it!" Babs whisper-shouted. She was expecting this to be difficult, but not this hard. She didn't expect Jonathan to be acting like this.
"Then what is it?! I mean, just tell me how you weren't trying to keep me down?! For God's sake, how can you be so-"
Before Jonathan could finish, Babs felt a hand on her shoulder. Turning around, she saw Kara standing over her. "Hey, sweetie? How are you doing?"
Babs cleared her throat. "Um, I'm doing okay."
Kara smiled warmly. "Cool. Say, are you thirsty?"
Now that Kara mentioned it, Babs's throat was a little dry. "Uh… kinda."
Kara quickly handed her a few dollars. "There, go buy yourself a drink."
Babs smiled. "Thanks." Placing a kiss on her cheek, she walked off, whistling.
Once she was gone, Kara took her seat, grabbing the phone and frowning at Jonathan. He hadn't moved an inch and was now staring at her, bewildered.
"...The hell was that?" Jonathan asked. "We were in the middle of a conversation. Well, I was in the middle of talking, but I assumed she'd have something to say after I was do-"
"No, no, no," Kara said, raising her hand. She knew she'd told Babs she wouldn't get involved, but seeing how her eyes filled up with hurt set something off inside her. "I wanna get one thing straight."
Jonathan titled his head. "Why would I wanna hear anything from you? You're just here to give her support, aren't you?"
Kara's frown deepened. "Yeah, well, I have a good few words to say to you, 'Jonny'."
Jonathan just raised an eyebrow. "Uh, I'm pretty sure you're not allowed-"
Kara gritted her teeth. Don't punch him, she told herself over and over again. She didn't want to get in too much trouble. "Babs is not a bad person. Just because she doesn't appreciate you gassing people, doesn't mean she's 'bad'. Far from it, I'd say."
Jonathan clicked his tongue. "How the hell did you hear th-"
"Where do you get off on saying that stuff?" Kara growled. "Look, I'll make this quick. Babs means everything to me. So, apologies if I don't like you making her cry."
Jonathan nervously fidgeted. "Well, in my defense, she wasn't cry-"
Kara held up a hand. "If you do anything to hurt her - scratch that - if you do anything to hurt anyone, I will make you regret it." She barely registered Jonathan's face going from 'confused' to 'scared'. "I will break your legs, then I'll break your arms, and then I will break your nose."
Jonathan blinked a couple of times, his eyes darting around the room. Fidgeting with his shirt, he lowered his head before saying, "I think that's a bit of an overreaction."
Kara snorted. "Says the guy who decided to use his freaky fear gas on some girl he'd never even spoken to?"
Even with his head bent, Kara could see him go red. "Well, it was really more of a way to let the people know who I was."
Kara rolled her eyes. "Well, doesn't that make you Humani-Person-Guy Of The Year." She leaned in closer. "My point still stands. You do anything to hurt anyone again… And you won't get away with it. Hell, if you try and break Babs down with your stupid scap-e-goat thing-"
"It's pronounced scapegoat."
"I will make sure you don't get away with it. I will fuck you up." She felt heat vision building up behind her eyes. Thankfully, not enough to be noticeable.
At least, not to everyone else. Jonathan's eyes widened. Kara panicked for a second - had he seen something? She caught a glimpse of her reflection in the glass between them. No, her eyes hadn't burst into flames yet, but that didn't mean they weren't bright with anger. Her jaw was clenched, her face the slightest bit flushed.
He was scared of her.
Taking a deep breath, she stood up, looking down at Jonathan, who had dropped the phone in shock. His eyes were wide, his face was pale and he sounded like he was struggling to say something. Anything. But nothing could come out.
Kara just glared at him. "Don't forget it, Jonathan."
"Damn, can you believe that they just randomly kicked us out?"
Babs didn't say anything, and instead just sipped her soda. She was staring straight ahead. She didn't look angry, just… a little annoyed.
Kara frowned. "What's the matter? Look, I know what he said was mean but-"
Babs looked up at her. "Why didn't you trust me?"
Kara blinked. "Wha…"
Babs groaned as she facepalmed. "Kara, I know you did something to get us kicked out!" She squinted. "Did you punch him?"
"What? No!" That was the truth. As much as she wanted to, she didn't. "I just told him that he couldn't keep doing crap like what he was doing to you or others."
Babs raised an eyebrow. "And?"
Kara clicked her tongue. "And I might have threatened him with bodily harm."
Baba groaned as slouched back into her seat on the bench, placing a hand to her forehead. Kara frowned.
"A… are you mad?" Kara asked, hoping the answer was 'no'.
Babs, at first, didn't say anything. Instead, she just took another sip from her soda. Eventually, after a few long seconds of silence, she turned to look at her.
"I'm not mad," she said, though her voice was rough. "I'm just a little annoyed."
Kara felt like kicking herself. "Why?" She asked, in spite of kind of sort of knowing the reason.
Babs side-eyed her.
"Okay, I know why, but… why? Why is it bothering you? I won't do it again, but… I didn't think it would upset you."
Babs sighed. "Kara, I told you I could handle this on my own," she said. "I was perfectly capable of talking to him alone. Y'know, once he stopped talking about how I'm a 'bad person'."
Kara stared at her. "But… you were clearly in some kind of distress."
"Who wouldn't if you were being screamed at?"
Kara crossed her arms. "I mean, a little."
Babs nodded. "Yeah, but I'd be able to deal with it. It's just…" She sighed again. "I just feel like you thought I was too weak to handle it."
If Kara wasn't already feeling guilty enough, that would have done it. Babs had never spoken to her like this before, with pure disappointment. It was like listening to her parents after they caught her sneaking out somewhere.
Kara took Babs's hands. "Babs, I'm sorry. Really. It's just…" She bit her tongue as she turned away.
Babs raised an eyebrow. "Kara?" She said. "You can tell me what it is. It's not like I'm gonna judge."
Kara turned back to Babs, who was now smiling. It was a small smile, but it was one. She sighed.
"Look, Babs… I just… I know you're strong enough to deal with this kind of stuff. I've known you for a while now, of course I'd know it. But…" She swallowed. "I don't want to take any chances. I don't want anyone making you sad, okay? I… I just don't want others hurting you."
Silence. Babs's face was unreadable. Kara awkwardly hugged herself, turning away. Was that good? Did she say the right thing?
Before she could think of anything else, she felt herself get pulled into a hug. Looking down, she saw Babs, wrapping her arms around her, smiling.
Kara blinked. "Um…"
Babs looked up, meeting her gaze. "Kara, I think that's one of the sweetest things I've heard from you."
Kara's eyes widened as she felt a weight be lifted off her shoulders. "R-really? I thought you were annoyed with me."
Babs just shrugged. "I was a little irritated, but… Honestly, I'm just happy you care that much about me! I mean, I never doubted that, but…" Babs nuzzled her face into her shoulder. "It's nice to know how much you care."
Kara smiled. "It's nothing," she said, trying to hide her reddening cheeks. She held Babs closer. "You mean the world to me too, by the way."
Babs looked up, her own face growing a little crimson. "Oh, uh… you heard that?"
Kara just grinned. "Super-hearing, remember?"
Babs's smile grew bigger as she planted her lips on Kara's own. Kara happily returned the gesture as the two shared a long kiss, uncaring of who was watching.
Hope you enjoyed it! Hopefully I'll have a Halloween one up before the end of the month. But before that, something with a bit more... riddles.
