"OK, let's see here…"
Babs looked in the mirror. "Spooky painted nails? Check. Fake fangs? Check." "Vampire cloak? Check. Trick or treat bag? Check. Emergency bag for Batsuit? Check!"
Yep, she was ready. Babs had been preparing for this night right when 12:00 AM on October 1st arrived. For ten nights she was preparing her new costume. A vampire would definitely be a step up from last year, namely a purple bunny. Long story, lost a bet, please do not ask.
After admiring herself, she grabbed her phone. She had gotten a few text messages; one from Harleen taking a selfie in front of an egged car, Karen wearing her new Halloween sweater, Zee dressed as a stereotypical witch and levitating on a mop in her room, Diana wielding a (possibly real) sword standing triumphantly in front of a bonfire, and Jess selling pumpkin pies to raise funds for an animal shelter. She smiled, closing her eyes and falling into her bed. She was a little bummed about not being able to spend Halloween with her besties, but hey, she had someone else to spend time with.
"Barbara!" Her dad's voice rang up the stairs. "Kara's at the door!"
Babs eyes snapped open as she sat up. "Coming!" She shouted. Quickly jumping off the bed, she rushed out the door and bounded down the stairs. He stopped by the door, placing her hand on the handle. As she pulled the door open, she pondered on what Kara had chosen. A week ago, she had jokingly suggested she could dress up as Batgirl. Kara had just blushed and covered her face, something that didn't subside when Babs followed it up with saying that she'd make her look really 'appealing'.
Now that she thought about it, she really hoped Kara had taken the idea to heart.
Once she had fully opened the door, she saw her. Kara Danvers, standing right outside. And, like Babs, she was dressed up. Her face was covered with white face paint, with black circles around her eyes and a few streaks of black paint to emulate a wider mouth. She was wearing a skeleton costume with black fabric and fake white bones all over it. She looked great.
Babs, with no hesitation, pulled her into a hug. "Kara! Good to see you!" She nuzzled her face into her neck. "Nice costume, by the way!"
Kara laughed as she stood up straight. "You think so?" She looked at the costume, frowning slightly. "My parents made it. I think it looks dumb."
Babs shook her head. "No, no, no. Kara, as a costume expert, your costume is great."
Kara blinked. "Really? Sure you're not just saying that?"
"Of course not!" Babs said. She grabbed the arm of her costume. "Ooh, nice fabric! Soft, too."
Kara smirked. "Well, I'm glad you like this lame thing." She flexed her right arm. "Still think it's dumb though, but hey, if you like it, I suppose I'll keep it on."
Babs just laughed as she closed the door behind her. "Sooooo, did I tell you what we're doing tonight?"
Kara looked down at her. "Uh… Don't think so."
Babs shook her head, smiling. "We're going to the pier! They've redecorated the place for Halloween!"
Kara smiled back. "In that case, what are we waiting for? Let's go!" With that, she quickly took off, with Babs trailing behind. She already knew this was going to be a great Halloween.
"Dude, this place is awesome!"
Babs laughed as she walked with Kara along the pier, away from most of the crowds. So far they'd checked out the Halloween store (picked up a few decorations that she could keep for next year), walked through a haunted house (which Babs hadn't been scared of at all, she'd just held onto Kara's hand because she liked doing that) and visited the various food stalls. Kara was currently stuffing herself with the candy they'd bought as Babs took pictures of everything (including a few sneaky ones of Kara).
"Yeah, isn't it?" Babs grinned. "Aren't you so glad I suggested this place?"
"Yeah, of course." Kara smiled. "How about when we're done we head back to my place and watch a horror movie? You can sleep over."
Even after months of dating, Babs' heart still fluttered at the prospect of a sleepover with Kara. "Yeah!"
"Awesome!" Kara shoved some more chips into her mouth. As she chewed, she said, "I mean, we need some real scares after that haunted house."
"Hey! What's wrong with the haunted house?"
"Come on, Babs! It's cheesy. Fun, but cheesy as hell." She rolled her eyes. "I mean, your costume is scarier than that."
Babs stopped walking. "Huh? What do you mean? You don't think my costume's scary?"
Kara also stopped. "Uh… is it meant to be?"
"Excuse me!" Babs frowned and folded her arms. "My costume is totally scary!"
Kara just stared at her. "Uh… If you want me to think it's scary, I…"
Babs stomped her foot. "How is it not scary?! I'm a vampire!" She spread her cloak. "They literally suck blood! And I think I've really captured the essence of them."
"Really?" Though Babs could tell she was trying, Kara couldn't keep a small smile off her face. "I think it makes you look…"
"Look what?"
"You know… cute?"
Babs's eyes burst open. "What?!" Normally, Kara calling her cute would inspire a kiss or hug, but now she wasn't happy with the compliment. "How?!"
"Look, sorry Babs, but…" Kara said. "Your little cloak, the painted nails, the little pumpkin pin on the collar… it's adorable!"
Babs felt her face go red from frustration. "Well… what about these?" She opened her mouth, allowing Kara to get a good look at her fangs.
After a few seconds of awkward silence, Kara just chuckled. "I'm sorry, but you're just too cute to look really scary."
Well, this wasn't the reaction she wanted at all. She turned away as Kara laughed a bit more. At this point, she really wanted to do something to get her mind off this. Looking around her, she tried looking for something. The ferris wheel? No, Kara found them dumb. Bumper cars. Nope, the line was too long. A corn maze?
Hey, that could work.
Babs grabbed Kara by the arm. "Kara, look!" She pointed to the corn maze. "Wanna try that?"
Kara raised an eyebrow. "Seriously? Wouldn't that be like the haunted house we were just at?" She threw another handful of chips into her mouth.
Babs shook her head. "Hey, don't knock it until you try it! Might actually be scary!"
Kara seemed to mull it over as she chewed on her food. Swallowing, she shrugged. "Eh, why the hell not?"
Babs smiled. "Then let's go!"
When getting into the corn maze, Babs didn't expect anything actually terrifying. And lo and below, she was right. Most of the scares boiled down to stilted spider animatronics jumping out of the fake corn and weird goblin-looking heads randomly screaming. If anything, it was less scary than the haunted house. At least that had some weirdo with a fake chainsaw jumping out.
However, something else she wasn't expecting was Kara's behaviour. Throughout the entire five minutes they had been there, she'd been acting afraid. As in, like she was acting a role where she had to be afraid. Babs could tell when Kara was faking something, whether it be paying attention, enthusiasm for one of Jess's talks, or getting into the comics she showed her from time to time. Right now, Kara not actually being afraid was obvious. The screams she let out were unconvincing, half the time she instantly snapped back to looking totally bored, and occasionally letting a smile slip out at times. Every time there was a noise, a spider animatronic, or even just something like Lois in a demon costume, she yelped and grabbed onto Babs.
Not that Babs minded the last part.
Right now, the two were still in the maze. A skeleton decoration fell out of the 'bushes', causing Kara to once again cling to Babs.
Babs looked at Kara. "Hey, babe?"
Kara looked at her. "Uh, yeah?"
"Is there something you wanna say?"
Kara let go of her. "What? No! It's just that…" She raised her arms into the air. "This is so spooky! Woooooah!" She aimlessly swung her arms around. "Like, really scary! Aaaaaagh!"
Silence. Kara's face was one of 'clearly-faux-horror' as Babs stared at her. Eventually, Kara's hands dropped down as she frowned. "What?"
Babs walked up to her. "Do you just wanna hold onto me?"
Kara's eyes widened as she backed away. "So what if I do? I mean, you were doing the same thing in the haunted house."
Babs narrowed her eyes. "No I didn't!" She sighed. "Kara, I know when you're scared, and right now, you're not scared."
Kara groaned. "OK, you called my bluff." She wrapped an arm around Babs. "But don't act like you don't like it."
Babs smiled. "Good point." She returned the gesture, looking up at her. "But be honest, is there anything here that scares you? Even a little?"
Kara just laughed. "Heck no! I've seen way worse. I mean, it's still fun, but damn if it ain't kinda kiddie."
Babs sighed, smiling. "You're barely afraid of anything, are you?"
Kara smirked as she flexed. "Got that right. Nothing can bring me down!"
Babs giggled as Kara did a few poses. However, that's when she spotted something. Something in her hair. Funny. She had never noticed she had a cockroach hairpin before now.
Wait, why would Kara have a cockroach hairpin? And why was it moving?
Wait.
Uh-oh.
Babs's eyes widened as she pointed up at Kara's hair. Kara stopped posing and stared at her. "Dude, you okay?"
Babs continued pointing. "Uh… are you aware of what's in your hair?"
Kara raised an eyebrow, but nevertheless ran a hand through her hair. "Don't tell me Mom messed up the paint and I just didn't notice until…"
She stopped when she felt something. Her hand clasped around something and she brought her hand to her face, unclenching it. There, in her palm, was a live cockroach.
The reaction was instantaneous. Kara screamed louder than Babs had ever heard her scream before. She quickly threw the cockroach to the ground, before clinging to Babs like she was a life preserver.
"How'd that demon thing get in here?!" Kara squawked, tightening her grip on her girlfriend, her eyes still fixated on the roach that was now squirming away.
Babs tapped on Kara's shoulder twice: her way of telling her she was squeezing her too hard. Kara quickly let go, rubbing the back of her head. "S-sorry."
Babs took a second to regain her bearings before she looked back at Kara. "Kara, it's fine. So what if you're sca-"
She paused when she felt something on her feet. Looking down, she spotted a load of cockroaches crawling all around her. Her eyes darted around as she attempted to find the source of what all these things were coming from, before finally settling on a few broken jars that were spilling out cockroaches. Leslie and Doris, dressed as a zombie and Minotaur-looking creature respectively, were laughing and filming the people reacting to the cockroaches. Babs glared at them. Figures.
However, before she could yell at them for being jerks as usual, she heard another loud scream before she felt something drop into her arms. Blinking, she stared down. Kara was now lying in her arms, her eyes shut tightly as she shaked like a leaf in a hurricane. Babs's eyes widened as she frowned. She felt so bad for her.
"Kara, it's okay," she said, stroking her hair.
Kara opened her eyes just to look into Babs's. "No it isn't!" Her eyes shut once again as she held on tighter. "You know how much I hate those things!"
Babs just held Kara tightly, trying to keep a good grip on her. With how much she was shaking, she swore that she could just slip out of her hands and straight into the swarm of the very thing she hated.
"Don't worry, Kara," Babs said, kissing her on the forehead. "Just hold on, and I'll get us out of here." She held onto Kara. "Close your eyes. I'll -"
"Aw, is Danvers scared?" Leslie's voice rang out loud and clear above the din. "Scared of a few itty-bitty creepy-crawlies?" She threw back her head and laughed.
At that point, it didn't matter that Leslie was two years older than Babs, about a foot taller and accompanied by terrifying Doris Zuel: she wanted to run up and knock the two of them out. That couldn't be done though, so she settled for giving them the dirtiest and (hopefully) scariest look she could muster. The main focus was getting her girl out of here.
With that, Babs turned around and started making her way out. She couldn't exactly remember the way she was going, but she remembered a good bit of it at least.
Soon enough, she spotted the exit. She sighed in relief before running out. She stopped near a bench. Kara was still holding onto her as she sat down.
"Kara?"
Kara opened one eye. "Yeah?"
"We're out."
Kara blinked as she stared at Babs. She then quickly withdrew her hands and took the space next to her. She bowed her head and hugged her legs to her chest.
Babs frowned. "Kara? You good?"
Kara didn't say anything, instead just looking at Babs. Even with her makeup Babs could tell her face was flushed, and she looked a mixture of sad and angry.
Babs's frown deepened. "Kara, is something wrong?"
Kara sighed. "Did you see how I acted back there?"
Babs blinked. "Kara, it's-"
"Babs, I acted like a total coward. Do you know how embarrassing it felt? Especially with those two dicks laughing about it?"
"Who cares what they think?" Babs put a hand on Kara's shoulder. "They're losers."
Kara only bowed her head again. "I felt so weak."
Babs grabbed Kara's head and made her face her. "Kara, you don't have to be ashamed. Who cares that you were afraid?"
Kara sighed. "I thought you would. Y'know, since you always say how strong and cool I am…"
Babs pressed her forehead to Kara's. "Babe, it's fine, really. So what if you're scared? That doesn't change how I feel."
Kara's face softened. "You mean it?"
Babs nodded. "Yep! You're just a person. Everyone's afraid of something. I'm not gonna judge you for being scared."
A smile appeared on Kara's face. "Good to know." The two sat in silence for a bit until Babs leaned in to place a big kiss on Kara's cheek. When she pulled around, she saw Kara's smile grow wider as she covered her mouth.
Babs raised an eyebrow. "What?"
Kara didn't say anything and just stifled a chuckle. Babs pulled out her trusty Bat-Mirror (patent pending) and looked in it. Her lips were covered in white paint, smeared across her face like if a shaking arm had put lipstick on her. When she looked at Kara again, she had finally stopped trying not to laugh, throwing her head back and cackling. Babs followed suit, laughing just as loud.
After a bit of hysterics, they calmed down, sighing happily. Kara looked back at her. "Well, this was a pretty good Halloween. Y'know, except for the stupid corn maze."
Babs smirked. "Got that right." She stood up. "Say, wanna look to see if there's anything else to do?"
Kara just returned the smirk. "Who am I to say no?" She pulled out an unwrapped chocolate bar. Babs opened her mouth and let Kara slide it in. "Let's go!"
Babs let out a muffled chuckle as she took Kara's hand and skipped off. At this point, she didn't even really care what they'd be doing next. As long as she was hanging out with Kara, she was happy.
