Bella's POV
It was a long way, full of ups and downs, and lots of tears, but I was finally finishing my PhD. Now it's time to move back to the US, because my dad needs me.
The day before
The ringing of the phone woke me up. It was too early for anyone in their right mind to be calling. Checking the number, I saw it was from the US. Dad probably forgot about the time difference, again
"Hi, Charlie. Did you forget it's wee early here," I said mockingly.
"Sorry, ma'am, may I speak to Isabella Swam?", the voice on the side of the call replied.
"Oh, sorry, I thought it was my dad. This is her."
"No problem, miss. Actually, I apologize for the timing, but this is from Fork's Memorial Hospital. We are calling you for you're Mr. Charles Swam emergency contact."
"Oh my God! Is he ok?" Fear instantly flooded through me.
"He was brought in a couple hours ago, and had to be taken into surgery. He has been moved to the ICU because he is in a coma."
"What happened?", I had to ask. How could that happen? It was Forks, for goodness' sake. The most serious violations were speeding and joyriding...
"There was a robbery at the 7-Eleven. The burglars were armed, and one of them shot Mr. Swam, while trying to escape.
Miss, as his only contact, we'll need you to fill out some paperwork. I understand you don't live in the city, so we can e-mail those to you."
"No, I mean, there's no need. I'll be flying back to Forks as soon as I can get a flight. He'll need me."
"Ok, miss. We'll be expecting you then. Once again, sorry for the inconvenience of the timing."
"That's ok, thanks."
My mind was numb. Charlie in hospital in a coma? How could that be? I had to go to him, no doubt about that.
End flashback
So, here I am, all packed and awaiting for the flight that would take me back home, coming back to the town I thought I would never set foot again.
I briefly wonder if he still lives there. No, it's no time to think about him. The only man I must have in mind now is Charlie, who is in a cold hospital bed, waiting for me.
Hold on, dad, I'm coming back.
