''I really don't think this is necessary,'' Lu argued as she followed Andy into her house.
''You're still recovering,'' Andy said as she put the baby carrier down and helped Lu out of her coat. It hadn't been a suggestion but a statement of fact that Lu was going to stay with her as long as she needed to recover.
It was unspoken between them but they knew that if left to her own devices Lu would return to her patients who needed her so much as soon as possibly could, which was simply impossible when you're also juggling a baby and recovering from a major procedure. She was healing well from the c-section but it was never easy on the body.
''How about you go take a nap,'' Andy said, giving Lu a slight push towards the stairs – the guestroom already prepared for her arrival by Andy's daughters – ''and I will prepare her bottle.''
Lu and Andy shared a look, neither of them knowing if Lu was going to challenge this suggestion. She finally gave in, having to admit that it was a struggle to keep her eyes open.
She took a few steps up the stairs, halfway up turning her around when she heard Andy talking quietly to the baby. It had been her favorite thing the past couple of days: seeing Andy with Rosa. It felt so natural.
She watched them disappear into the other room and continued her way up the stairs, for the first time in nine months feeling as if things would actually turn out okay. She didn't have to do this alone and she knew that this time that promise wouldn't be broken.
