Remember who? chapter 31

Loren tries to breathe, she walks out of the room, she runs to the patio area and sits. What's wrong with him? Nora sits by her side.

"The injury he sustained is causing this confusion."

"Why wouldn't he know who I am?"

Katy walks in. "The Dr. is with him, Max's in the room, I'm sure he'll be fine, he just woke up from a long coma."

"I don't know what I'll do if he doesn't remember anything!"

"Stop!" Nora looks at her. "You're going to continue to stay strong, he'll need time to heal, he'll be fine, you have to stay positive."

"I'm trying; I'm pregnant with his baby, what if he never remembers?"

Katy interrupts. "First of all you're not alone, you have us and Eddie, neither one of you is alone, let's go to his room."

Katy holds her hand and they return to his room, Eddie's lying in his bed, he's awake but not saying much. The Dr. approaches Loren.

"Mrs. Duran, after a serious brain injury, things like amnesia may occur, don't say too much to him yet, give him time to remember on his own, don't want to shock him with too much too soon."

Loren looks towards the bed; he's sleeping again. "I'll be here Dr."

She knows she has to be strong. She touches her tummy, a new life is inside is beginning, she knows she has to be there for Eddie and the baby.

A week later, Eddie stays awake longer; he has no idea who Loren is. He notices she's there every day, always sitting by his side.

"Why are you always here?"

She sighs, the thought of Eddie not knowing who she is scares her. She doesn't know how to answer, she had a childhood friend whom she lost while they were in grade school, his name was Charlie. "You're my husband's best friend, he can't be here right now, I promised him I'd stay with you."

His smile is weak. "Thanks, that means a lot! Where's your husband?"

Loren feels the tears; she avoids making eye contact with him, she stays busy while she writes in her notebook.

"He's on tour, he's very busy, he'll be home soon."

"I'm sorry I don't remember you or him, I'm trying hard."

"No…" She finally looks at him; she places her hand on his arm. "It's ok, Dr.'s said you have to be patient, everything will come back to you, you'll see."

"I feel like I live in Neverland, no memories, no feelings."

"You're an amazing friend, you're loved very much Eddie."

"That's very sweet of you to say."

Katy walks into the room. "I can stay with Eddie, Kelly needs you to stop by and look through some information."

"Are you sure it can't wait?"

"She said your husband needs those papers faxed."

"Ok." She turns to look at Eddie. "I'll be back later."

"Sure, take your time."

She leaves, he looks at Katy. "Mom?"

"You don't seem too convinced I'm your mom?"

"I hate not remembering anything at all, I believe you."

Katy smiles and hands him a cup. "I'm glad, here, you love these, enjoy!"

He takes the cup. "What is it?"

"Strawberry banana shake, trust me you love them."

He takes a sip. "Listen, can you help me?"

"Sure, what do you need?"

"Who's Loren? I have this gut feeling I know her, she said she's married to Charlie my best friend, and he's on tour?"

Katy takes a deep breath; she has to follow Loren's story. "Yes of course."

"Where is Charlie?"

She said the first thing that came to her mind.

"He manages a music group."

"She's beautiful, I don't think I could leave my wife alone like he does, I'm going to tell him when I see him."

"I think you should, he's very sweet."

"Once you see him, you'll remember."

Eddie leans on the bed. "I hate this, why did this happen?"

"Please don't stress about it, the Dr.'s say you'll be fine, things will start flowing back."

"Can you imagine how I feel? I don't remember anything mom, who I know, who I love!"

Katy sits by his side, it hurts to see her son this way, he's restless, he knows he's missing so much.

Loren arrives at the Madsen's office. "I'm here Kelly, aside from signing these papers, anything new?"

"Eddie's Album and yours are on the top 5 on the Billboard, it's amazing."

"Our fans are amazing." She says.

"How do you feel?" Kelly asks.

"I'm fine; Dr. says baby is doing great."

"How far along are you?"

"Going on 12 weeks."

"What are you going to do when you start showing?"

Loren looks at her. "What do you mean?"

"Eddie will see you're pregnant, he's going to ask."

"He knows my husband is out on business, I sit with him because I promised my husband, his best friend, I'd do it."

"If he goes online, he might see things that will definitely confuse him."

"Dr. told him he's not to look or read anything, he knows he has to be careful, he understands."

Kelly hugs Loren. "Please be patient, I know he'll recover."

"And if he doesn't? Will he remember? How am I going to go on without him in my life?"

"He's young, he going to be ok."

"I've researched patients with amnesia, some never recover Kelly, is that my future? Alone raising Eddie's baby?"

"Stop! Don't do this! He's a fighter."

She leans on Kelly; tiny tears roll down her cheeks. "I love him, miss him Kel, I have to fight the urge to tell him who I am, how much I love him."

"You will, I know it will happen."

Two weeks later, Eddie's discharged, he's going home with his parents, a nurse will check on him once a day for a month. Loren feels helpless, she goes home without him; he still doesn't remember anything.

Loren stops by with any excuse to see him. "How is he Katy?"

"He sits and looks at the pictures on the wall. I had to hide your wedding pictures, Dr. said that could shock and set him back."

"How are you?"

"Aside from feeling very tired and sleepy, I'm ok, trying to stay busy, I miss him so much."

"I know, a therapist will be stopping by to talk to him, he'll check if he has any memories resurfacing." Katy tells her.

"I hope that helps."

Eddie walks into the living room area. "Hi, good to see you."

Loren forces a smile. "Hi Eddie, how are you?"

"I'm doing great, I think."

"You look great."

"Thanks, when can I meet your husband?"

"Soon, he's very busy."

"I'm sorry I don't remember him; I can't remember anything at all."

Katy smiles. "Remember what the Dr. said, it'll happen."

Loren gets her bag. "I've got to go and see Kelly, I'll talk to you soon Katy."

"Yes stop by anytime." She kisses Katy on the cheek and smiles at Eddie.

He turns towards his mom. "Why is she always alone? What idiot leaves his beautiful wife alone for so long?"

"He's a busy man, rest assure he loves her very much."

"She's here a lot, are you good friends?"

"Yes we are, I helped launch Loren's career, we're very close."

"That's great."

"Loren is an amazing performer."

"I'd love to see her." Katy hands him a DVD. "Here, watch her in action."

Eddie sits to watch her perform her songs from her first album.

Katy walks into the room where he's sitting. "Isn't she great?"

"Yeah, she's amazing, does Charlie manage her too?"

"He manages several artists, not Loren, that's why he's away for so long."

"Loren said we're friends? Some of those songs sound familiar, did she and I perform together?"

"Yes, you did."

You can see the confusion in his face, he wants to remember everything, it's like he knows he's missing out on something important.

"Who's her husband? Loren said he's my best friend."

Katy sighs. "Yes, it's Charlie!" Katy bites her lower lip, she hates lying to him, but, it's best he doesn't know everything.

"I can't place him. I guess once I see him, I'll remember."

He gets his bottle of water and walks out to the patio. Max walks in. "Let me join you."

"Sure Pops."

"Have you remembered anything?"

Eddie sits on one of the lounge chairs. "No, I hope therapy will somehow help me."

"Do you remember your mom and I?"

"Sorry, not really, I hate not having that part of my life back, I'm kind of nervous though."

Max furrows his eye brows. "Why? What's wrong?"

"Was I in love?"

Max sighs, nervous to answer. "Yes you've always been in love with life and the ladies."

He leans back and smiles. "I'm glad there's no one in my life right now, I don't think I could cope with that."

"How so?"

"I can't remember anything, imagine if I was in love, I can't recall it, that would be bad."

"I guess you're right."

Max watches his son stare into the blue sky, he's sure he's trying hard to remember something, if only he knew, it's a slow process that will bring his past back little by little, his faded memories that seem to linger elsewhere.

A Week later, Kelly asks Loren to tour several cities in California for 3 weeks, before she gets further along into her pregnancy. Loren hasn't shared with the media about her pregnancy. She's afraid they might say something to Eddie, she doesn't want him affected by the news or what it might do to his recovery.

She leaves with her mom. The thought of traveling and performing without Eddie is very painful.

They flew to some near-by cities of California, her weekend shows sold out and even though she's hurting, she has her best performances.

After 3 weeks, she returns to her Hotel to pack and fly back home, she wants to see Eddie. She notices her baby bump.

"Look mom, I have a small baby bump."

She stands in front of the mirror to look at her small bump, she caresses it. "I wonder what it is? Maybe a boy?"

"Or a girl?" Nora adds.

Loren finally cracks a smile. "I'm excited to find out, I hate going through this pregnancy alone, I hope Eddie will remember soon."

"I'm know he will honey; his injury was very serious."

"Did you hear? Jason got life without parole?" Loren shares with Nora.

"What he did was horrible!"

"And to think it was my fault." Loren adds.

Nora looks at her daughter. "None of this is your fault, stop saying that!"

"I know mom, we better get going I want to get home and see my husband."

They fly back home, Loren stops at her place and leaves her things, she quickly drives to Katy and Max's house. She walks in, Max is sitting and reading a book.

"Hey look whose back!"

"Hi Max." He smiles. "You're showing sweetheart."

She touches her bump. "I'm going into my 20th week."

"You look very beautiful." Max tells her.

She down cast her look. "Thanks Max, I'm trying very hard, it's been 3 months and Eddie hasn't remembered anything."

"He started therapy, he seems happy."

"Really? I hate touring without him."

Katy walks in with Eddie in tow. "You're back Loren." She hugs her. She turns toward Eddie. "Hi, how are you?"

"It's great to see you Loren, I'm ok, I guess, listen did you see Charlie?"

"Charlie?"

"Your husband?"

"Oh yes, we spend time together."

He notices her bump. "You're pregnant?"

"Yes, we're very happy."

"He better come and stay with you until that baby is born."

Loren lets out a small sigh. She wants so much to tell him he's the father of her baby, she has to wait."

Later that night Eddie's in bed, he's restless and sweating, he turns in his bed from side to side. He keeps hearing Loren's voice, he sees the view of a beach, there's a woman walking towards him wearing a beautiful white beach dress; he can hear the waves crashing. He hears the vows; he can't see her face.

He suddenly sits up. "Loren!"

He holds his head; he gets up to get a drink of water from the kitchen. He's confused, he sits on a chair, he can't stop thinking of that dream.

"Why am I thinking of her?" He wonders.

Katy walks in. "Are you okay Honey?"

He's quiet, Katy notices he's sweating and seems restless.

He looks at his mom. "I was dreaming about Loren, why?"

Ugh! Please remember Eddie!
