Disclaimer:l don't own Naruto

Authors Note: reviewer shieldtoad asked whether this was a Naru/Mito story. Now l'm quite open to the idea and l could go with it but nothing is decided yet. l'd like to play with the characters a bit to see what l'm gonna work with.

All things considered, Mito was having a good day. Just like she said, Naruto's friends were now her firends. He didn't seem to have a problem sharing with her.

Honestly, some of his friends were really, really weird. A good weird of course, well most of them anyway.

She had no qualms with the girls. It was pretty clear that lno was the gossip monger of the group with Sakura right behind her. Speaking of Sakura, the girl had a major thing for the Uchiha. She was sure Sasuke could see it but he paid it no mind.

If anything, she should feel sorry for Hinata. She was told the girl had a crush on Naruto since they were kids but unlike Sasuke, her cousin was oblivious, really dense too.

Tenten seemed more layed back than the rest but she a thing for sports for like fencing and archery.

Now, the boys were a species of their own. She was not even sure where to start. She felt she had Naruto and Sasuke pegged but everyone hid something.

Shino, the bug lover. She couldn't say she had an opinion of that one yet. Bugs could be...cool? The guy was pretty quiet so she couldn't really tell much about his personality. His face was covered too.

Lee, she didn't even know where to begin with him.The guy was pretty hyperactive and loud. Very loud. He was an okay guy but is appearance was quite...eh unique. She would have to help with his fashion sense sometime because spandex did not belong on him.

Chouji was easier to navigate. He was a food fanatic through and through. He just didn't like to be called fat.

Neji was cousins with Hinata but the two were completely different. Where Hinata was shy and timid, Neji was confident and bold. He had no qualms with speaking out about stuff.

Kiba, the dog lover. He was a pretty cool guy if you looked past his brash nature and proud attitude. He seemed just a tad bit flirtatious with her .

The last one the Nara. She could say he was pretty lazy if anything. She was actually with him right now in one of her classes, philosophy. Mito couldn't see why he chose the class. He barely seemed to be paying attention. She turned her head to the teacher who was non other than Sasuke's brother.

"You should never be sad about other people and their opinions," Itachi started. Mito couldn't see where his point was going.

"... because they all die," he finished. She blinked owlishly at him as he continued with "Death is normal but man is the only creature that refuses to accept the inevitable, l want you all to pair up and expand on that point," he said.

"What a drag," she heard Shikamaru muttered. His annoyance was palpable. Mito turned to face the lazy cloud watcher. So he had been paying attention after all.

"Wanna partner up?" the redhead asked. Shikamaru looked at her for a few moments before nodding. For him it would have been too troublesome to actually open his mouth.

Naruto did not like economy. He did not have anything against the class but the teacher was a pain. Kakuzu loved money. It was all he ever spoke about in class, but that was part of the job. 'Money makes the world go round' he said. Frankly, Naruto didn't like the guy.

"Naruto, pay attention," Sakura whispered. Oh, his crush was in this class. That made it slightly more bearable but the fact that Sasuke was also in this class dimmed his mood almost instantly. What did she see in him?

"Crime doesn't pay... unless you don't get caught of course. Now that's a job, no one forcibly dragging you to work, your own schedule and budget..." it appeared as though Kakuzu was ranting again. This was becoming a normal sight in his class.

The man would often use them for his therapeutic purposes. Kakuzu obviously had a screw loose somewhere in that head of his.

"He's doing it again," he heard Sakura whisper to him and Sasuke.

"It's pretty normal for him though," the Uchiha offhandedly commented as he rested his chin in his palm.

Naruto could tell that class was pretty much over so he turned to Sakura.

"So how do you like Mito," he asked, a smile gracing his lips.

"She's okay," Sakura said. Not really what he wanted but he would take it. He hadn't really expected an answer from Sasuke but he got one.

"She's an Uzumaki," it sounded vague and empty but they knew their friend. He considered the girl interesting. Naruto didn't really care, just as long as Sasuke accepted her.

Sakura didn't like his answer. She was expecting Sasuke to not say anything at all and if he did, she would have thought he would say she was annoying like he considered most girls.

"Pretty sure money doesn't always make you happy," Naruto whispered as he heard kakuzu yap about how 'money was a man's best friend'.

Unfortunately, Kakuzu heard him and he wasn't happy. "Detention," he said smugly.

"What for?!" the blonde yelled back indignantly.

Kakuzu smirked, or did he? Darn the face mask. "Talking back to your teacher, you brat,"

"Way to go dope," Sasuke whispered and on the first day too. His mother was not gonna be happy to hear her this amd even if he lied, she could just ask Mito. This was why he hated economy class.

Mito wasn't sure how to feel about what Naruto was asking her. He got detention and expected her to lie to aunt Kushina. How the hell had he gotten detention before lunch amyway.

"Only you," she wasn't really mad per say but she definitely wasn't happy either.

"Then who do you expect me to walk home with, Naruto?!"

"Sasuke and Sakura, they live close by so l'm sure they won't mind if l ask," he said easily. Mito gave him a blank look before a smile formed on her lips, one that he instantly didn't like.

"I'm willing to lie for you, of course I'll need something in exchange," she put her forefinger near her bottom lip as if she was thinking.

"Anything," Naruto stupidly agreed almost immediately. Mito's smile widened as she spoke.

"You see, l may have forgotten my lunch and l didn't bring any money, so..." she left it hanging in the air but he got the gist of it. He could already here Gama-chan crying. If there was one thing an Uzumaki was good at, it was eating. Maybe Mito was the rare exception.

She was not. Mito proved to be a glutton

Honestly, he wondered how the hell she maintained her figure with all the food she gulped down. It had to be an Uzumaki family secret. Gama-chan was nearly empty so he asked for her show mercy.

"Sorry...got a bit carried away," she smiled.

"You think," he gave her a deadpan expression. He didn't know a girl could eat that much but he kept that to himself. His mother often told him girls didn't like to hear stuff like that.

"You aren't serious about Sasuke, are you?" she finally asked. Naruto was a bit confused but a few seconds later it clicked. "The bastard can't be that bad," he laughed. Sasuke seemed to have done something in the short time he left them alone.

"He is that bad. Sakura is only slightly better, l don't even know why you like her," he had to know that she liked Sasuke right? Or maybe he was just that dense.

"Sakura-chan is pretty great, a lot better that bastard anyway," he muttered.

Mito took her leave as Naruto headed to detention.

Sasuke's Walk home had been oddly... intriguing. For starters, Naruto was absent which saved him from a possible migraine. Sakura was still there but so was Mito. That actually afforded him some nice peace and quiet as the two females conversed. It didn't last long before he was dragged in the to the mix.

"Hey Mito, where are you from," he heard Sakura ask. He was curious as well, Naruto never really mentioned relatives.

"Uzushio, far of in the coast of Water country," she offered as Sakura nodded.

"Uzushio, never been there," she turmed to Sasuke and raised an eyebrow.

"I've never been ther too," he decided to answer. Sakura looked at Mito as she asked "What's it like,"

"lt rains a lot were l grew up.You rarely ever got to see the sun," she sounded wistful. Sasuke filed that away bit of info automatically. So she missed her home, which begged the question, why was she now living with an idiot like Naruto?

He cursed his father for this. He was the reason Sasuke was always analysing things. The man wanted his sons to be police officers but neither really wanted that.

"So how do you two know Naruto?" the redhead inquired earnestly. Sakura's answer was almost automatic.

"We met when we were 10. Back then l used to be teased about my forehead. Naruto thought l had a nice forehead..." Mito assumed this was where they became friends, "...so l hit him,"

Mito and Sasuke gave her very odd expressions. She smiled sheepishly.

"He kept saying l was pretty and l could never get rid of him for long. Eventually, l just came to accept his friendship and l'm pretty grateful," she told them.

With that, Mito turned her attention to the stoic Uchiha. With a very reluctant sigh he spoke.

"I met him when we were about 5. His mother and my mother go way back," he finished. Mito just blinked at him. That was it?

"Wow, pretty boring," the way she saidnit urked him. He readied a retort but Mito was quicker.

"Looks like my stop here, enjoy your time together," she smirked as Sasuke paled at being left with just Sakura. He had to get home and fast.

Mito sauntered away with a spring in her step and a victorious grin. Sasuke 2, Mito 1.

Mito was beat when she entered the Uzumaki household. She planned on just sleeping till dinner when Kushina's voice echoed out to her.

"Mito, how was your first day of school?" she asked.

"Good, Naruto let me borrow his friends," Mito told her aunt. Kushina then noted her son's absence.

"Speaking of him, where is that boy?" Suddenly, Mito remembered what she had to do. She went with the first thing that came out of her mouth.

"He's with Sakura," she said and Kushina received a phone call.

Mito released a sigh of relief and made her way to her room only to stop as Kushina answered the phone with "WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S IN DETENTION!!!"

Oh, so close.
