"Sir, you really want me to get the awesome pup?"
"He's not awesome, Humdinger, Harold. Swashbuckle will be accompanying you. Now go."
"But—"
"He was the prince's favourite. I don't like that. Oh, and I've been spying on him, Chase is extremely especially close to Rocky, Marshall, and Ryder. Rocky seems to have feelings for him, I hate those gay pups. Tail that Rocky, maybe because he really likes Chase you can put a trap on for him."
"Okay, sir. Okay, Axton Scott, sir. We shall do everything for you."
The pups of the team gaped at Chase.
"You're in danger...and you didn't bother to tell us you almost died?" Marshall asked.
"I was trying to block it out," Chase returned. "So yeah, that Terrier tried to kill me. And now..he's back..." He paused. "I had visions in the past. If I could just have another good vision, telling me where Ax's coming back...I do wish..."
"Is it possible?" asked Rocky, sounding worried.
"It—I don't really know."
"But it's got to be it, shouldn't it?"
"Rocky, I really don't know." Chase's voice sounded tired and faint. "I need to go to sleep, and when I wake up, this is all going to be a nightmare. Okay, myself? Do I know me? I am not hyperventilating. I am normal." He was talking rather to himself, and he seemed to not notice it, as he walked all the way to his pup house muttering to himself.
When he was gone, Rocky whispered, "I hope this is a dream."
"Is it?" Marshall asked fearfully to Ryder.
"Yeah, is it?" Zuma whimpered.
"Even if it isn't, we're not letting Chase die," Ryder said. "Right?"
"Yeah!" all the pups chorused, their spirits lifting up a little.
As the pups all rushed outside to play, careful not to disturb the napping Chase, Rocky stayed behind.
"Ryder, Chase is in danger, isn't he?"
Ryder sighed. "Axton tried to kill him; I found a newspaper at Mr. Porter's the other day, it said Axton'd come back..."
"Ryder, are you...scared?"
"Yes, Rocky."
"I am, too."
"Rocky, why do you keep looking at Chase like...that?"
Rocky blushed. "Er...uh, what?"
"Rocky, do you like-like Chase?"
"Sure...yeah..." Rocky hung his head.
"All those days, I thought you like Zuma! But yes, I shipped you with Chase...that's great," Ryder smiled.
Rocky smiled, too, at the relief of knowing his owner was fine with him liking Chase.
"Call...forgot I had it on silent, but it's moving," Ryder muttered, taking out his Pup-pad. "It's the Earl!"
"The Earl?" Rocky asked confusedly, head tilting to the side.
Ryder accepted the call.
"Ryder, Sweetie's been kidnapped!" came the anguished voice of the Princess.
"By who?!" Ryder asked hurriedly.
"A white, a white dog! It looked like Sweetie, except his eyes were grey and his fur on the top was a bit weird, he called himself Ax! And he was with this woman who called herself Ladybird, and the Duke of Flappington! The Cheetah was there, too! And Ax kept saying, 'I have aww the viwwians the PAW Patrow knows.'"
"I think I know who he is," Ryder whispered, turning white. "I'll catch him." He hung up. "Rocky...get into the Air Patroller. We got an important mission on our hands—or paws." He paused. "PAW Patrol, to the Air Patroller!" he called, tapping on his screen. Then he ran, at full speed, to the jet. "Oh, and Rocky, get Robo-Dog too."
"Got it!" yelled the mix-breed, who was hurrying to the jet as well.
Sounds of "Ryder needs us!" were heard in the distance, reaching the Mayor's ears...
Ryder knew the correct catchphrase was, "Ryder is dying to see us".
"They've went for the bait, sir, Sweetie can go back in an hour or so."
"No way, Sweetie is helping us get that foul pup. Tail the team, Humdinger; take over their HQs, Sid, Arrby, Harold. Cheetah, help them."
"Yes, sir, I'll do anything. Let's go."
On the Air Patroller, the pups were all on their seats.
"PAW Patrol, ready fur action, Ryder, fur," Chase slurred, apparently half-awake. "I mean, PAW Patrol, ready for action, Ryder sir!"
"Pups, you see you have bulkier pup-packs. They have every single piece of your gear inside. This is beyond a Mission Paw," said Ryder determinedly. "This is...Mission Ax."
"Mission ax?" murmured the pups. Robo-Dog's screen displayed a question mark.
"Pups, all the villians we know have teamed up. Including Axton, and they've kidnapped Sweetie. We don't know if they staged the scene so they can get Sweetie to team up with them, and..."
"Wyder," Zuma interrupted, "I think this is a bait."
Ryder stared at him. "What?"
I think we'we going to Bawkingbuwg for nothing. I think they'we waiting for us thewe, Wyder. So they can twap us. And fwom what we know, they want Chase. Even if they're not there, they might set up a trap for us at HQ, maybe all of them."
"Zuma," Ryder ventured, "you do have a point, and a good one. Tell you what, I'll get the other pups to join us, and some of them will guard HQ." He tapped around on his Pup-pad, as the Patroller began to fly. "Tuck, Ella, Rex, Everest, Tracker, Wildcat, Liberty, hi. Everest, Tracker, and Rex, come to Barkingburg. All of you, meet at the Lookout; Rex, Everest and Tracker know where the castle is. Join them, and if you get lost, call me, and I'll send you a map. When we're at Barkingburg, we'll add a feature to your vehicles that's like a map. Liberty, guard at Adventure City. Wldcat, at our Moto base. Tuck, at our main one. Ella, at the Sea one. Rex, the Dino Wilds should be fine with Taylor and Mrs. Turbot. You got that?"
"Yes!"
"Good. This is an important mission. At Barkingburg."
Ryder hung up.
All the pups' heads turned to Chase. His expression was not of fear or worry. He merely held a probing face. "Axton was my friend," he finally said.
"Friend?" Marshall asked, surprised.
"Oh, yeah." Chase started to smile slowly. "I was the only pup in the PAW Patrol then. Axton would come by every other day. Then, the prince was a baby, the princess's brother who died of sickness at 6. His dad came by every few months. And then he became a toddler, and he came with his dad a lot. He liked me a lot, and didn't really pay attention to Ax. Could that be the reason Axton is trying to kill me now?"
"Because he's jealous? Maybe," Rocky murmured.
"This is...Mission Ax!" the pups cried together, feeling a new surge of courage.
"Can you tell us more about your time with Axton?" asked Rubble.
"Sure." Chase shrugged. "He has a lisp, his ls are rs. But with Zuma's lisp, you'll understand." Then he turned to Zuma, adding, "No offence."
Flashback
In this world, there are a lot of friendships. Some break apart, others turn into couples, even marriages. And some backfire, leading into some kind of a combat. And some drive over to killings.
In the Town of Adventure Bay, there's a sweet little cottage set up beside a lighthouse, the lighthouse whom Ryder, living in the cottage, desperately wanted. A little boy, his dreams too big, he was called, but he took no notice; he knew that lighthouse was his.
He lived with a puppy named Chase, who had the same desire as his owner, and a marvellous friend named Axton.
Chase and Ryder's cottage was a clean, small one. Little bushes were lined up against the walls. A small, breaking pup-house made of wood stood next to the cottage, painted blue, hidden by small bushes with red and yellow flowers. His name stood out, the golden letters spelling Chase. It might have been wrecked by the weather, but Chase loved it, it was spectacular; inside was a mirror, a few chew toys, a bed and sheets, and Officer Bear, Chase's favourite stuffy. Officer Bear sat down on the bed, keeping watch—that was what Chase said he was doing.
"Chase!"
"Yeah, Ax?"
"The King is here, with Prince Matthew!"
"Ooh, his first visit?"
"Yeah, he's so owd now! I thought he'd come water!"
"Me too, Ax. Let's go see him!"
The two pups howled, bounding over to the front door of their old cottage. There stood the prince, short, with a pretty light blue tuxedo and a radiant smile. He looked over at Chase and hugged him.
"You in PAW Patrol!" Then he looked over at Axton. "You Chase friend?"
"Yes," answered Axton timidly. "Yes, Prince. That is correct."
Chase looked flustered. He had not expected the Prince to hug him with such an affectionate way. "Yes, hello, Prince."
The prince squealed. "You house so nice, is that you toy?" He pointed to an old chew toy.
"Yeah, but, uh, it's old. Do you want to keep it?"
"Yes! Sure!" He ran over and picked it up. "Thanks you!"
"Oh—sorry, my wife told me to be back at 5, it's 4:15 now; I just came here when the conductor lost his way. Goodbye." The king waved, and he left along with the prince.
Meanwhile, envy was boiling up in a certain pup's stomach...
Flashback End
"That's when it all started," Chase said sadly. "Of course, I don't blame His Majesties: they helped me calm down Axton when he had a tantrum. Then I didn't know why. It was jealousy."
"Jealousy can really change friendships," mumbled Skye.
"Yeah, over attention, wealth, happiness..." Chase trailed off.
"Guys, does it kind of feel like we'we saving a pup at the moment?" Zuma asked the others, and instantly all eyes were on Chase.
"Yes, we're partially going to Barkingburg because of me," Chase nodded. "Not to criticize myself or anything, it's just a fact," he added, at the look the pups were giving him.
"Axton, did you like him much?" asked Rocky. "I mean, before this whole 'I'm jealous of you, I'm gonna kill you' thing."
"He was a good friend," shrugged Chase. "He was older than me by two years, I looked up to him then. But not as much as I look up to my owner, and my real friends now."
"How did—how'd you feel when Axton merely turned his back on you?" asked Ryder, who had not spoken a word until then.
"Well—er, I was kind of baffled. I mean, I was, like, only three. Even younger than Tracker. I didn't really understand then. I was new to getting, you know, sad?" he responded.
"That's understandable," nodded Skye.
"True," added Rubble.
The other pups agreed.
But deep down, Chase was scared, more scared than he had ever been in his life. Maybe he was even more scared than the time he had to give a speech at the start of the PAW Patrol. He knew Axton was going to kill him—except if he changed. Except if he tried for some somber, became the good pup he was those years before—but now that was impossible. Axton had a "reputation". That "reputation" was to kill Chase, maybe the whole PAW Patrol. Maybe even destroy the Lookout and Adventure Bay.
