Chapter VI

Eric walked into the training room and took a quick glance at Jamie. They made eye contact and Jamie blushed, making Eric smirk in return. Four addressed the group, taking Jamie's attention away from him. "Your fights will start tomorrow, and they will last two weeks." Eric then spoke up.
"After your fights, you start your weapon training. Again, you will be ranked."
"Start your warm ups, practice your fighting techniques." They all broke apart and began to run laps around the room. Four turned to Eric, he saw the exchange between the two men earlier "Why was Jamie blushing?"
"We had sex, this morning." Eric lied. "He really enjoyed it, who knew that Stiff wasn't much of a Stiff after all." Four gaped at him and rolled his eyes.
"Whatever Eric, he's not that stupid. I've noticed you've been hanging around him quite a bit, as a leader I thought fucking initiates was beneath you." Four couldn't help feeling like he needed to protect his brother.
"Four, Jamie told me you were his brother, don't you think it's a little late to act like one now?" Eric raised an eyebrow at him.
"It's none of your business."
"Then don't ask what's going on between us." Eric replied, shutting down the rest of the conversation.

The initiates were into practicing when one of them tripped Jamie up. It was Derek, an Erudite transfer, him and his group made it their job to pick on Jamie when he was in the dorms, which didn't seem that often. Eric had seen what had happened and stopped to watch. Jamie got up "What the fuck?"
"Oh sorry Stiff, you were in the way. I didn't mean to trip you up." Jamie pushed Derek and Derek went to punch him, when Jamie punched him first, giving Derek a nosebleed. "You'll pay for that Stiff." They were about to get into a fight when Four interrupted.
"Leave the fights for tomorrow. Anymore fighting and you'll be at the bottom of the ranking board." Eric stood at the back watching, pleased that Jamie had stood up for himself and not cower like a Stiff would. "You did well everyone, have something to eat and we'll see you tomorrow." Four told the group. Derek barged Jamie on his way out. "Jamie, I need to speak to you." Jamie groaned and waited behind. Eric raised his eyebrows at Jamie and Four turned to him. "Haven't you got leadership stuff to do?" Eric shook his head and left.

"Jamie I'm concerned with the amount of time you are spending with Eric."
"Four that is none of your concern, nor business."
"I'm just telling you, watch out. This is just a game to him."
"I told you before Four, leave me alone."
"I'm just worried about you."
"Shame you never thought of me when you left."
"Jamie, please I am trying."
"Are we done?"
"Yes, you can go." Four sighed. Jamie marched off and made his way to the mess hall. He felt someone grab him from behind and Jamie went into fight mode.
"It's me." Eric said, Jamie relaxed. "What was that about?" Even though Eric was Dauntless, his Erudite traits still stuck.
"Four trying to be my big brother, said that this between us, is just a game to you. He tried to warn me off of you."
"Jamie, I'll be honest, I don't do dating nor relationships." Jamie looked at Eric, trying to hide the hurt. Eric had seen the flash of hurt in Jamie's eyes and sighed. "You seem to have gotten under my skin though." He pushed his hand through his hair, "I don't know what this is or if it will go anywhere."
"I'm willing to give whatever this is a go." Jamie said hopeful.
Eric smiled, "Good. Change of plan tonight about training, I have to catch up on some paperwork, so you have the evening off. My suggestion is to not drink too much, and try and get an early night. I'll see you in the morning with the other initiates."
"Oh, okay. Do you think I'll be okay?"
"If you need to ask that, then what do you think?" Eric replied and left.

Jamie entered the mess hall and Alex called him over. "So, are you finally gonna do something fun with us this evening or have another early night?"
Alice replied "I don't know why you ask Jamie every time, you know the answer."
"Actually, I'm up for fun." Jamie needed something to distract himself from Eric and what he had admitted. Alex beamed and cheered. "I'm not getting drunk though, I want a clear head for the fights tomorrow."
"You bore." Cameron teased.
"Actually we were going to get tattoos tonight." Lewis beamed, his lip ring catching the light.
"Jamie you gonna get one?" Alex asked inbetween bites of his burger.
"Don't talk with your mouth full." Lewis shoved him. Alex shoved Lewis back, knocking Alice.
"Boys quit it." She replied, glaring at them both.
"Sorry." They both muttered back.
"So, Jamie you getting a tattoo?" Cameron asked.
"I've never really thought about it."
"That's a yes then." Alex grinned.

They had all finished eating and made their way to Tori's tattoo shop. "Whatcha gonna get?" Alex asked Jamie, all excited.
"I still don't know."
Alice grinned, "I know the perfect thing."
"Ugh oh." Cameron replied. Alice hit him on the arm, "Shut up Cam."
Jamie smiled at them both. "Seriously though I know the perfect one. Trust me."
"Last time she said trust me, I had to streak through our dorms." Lewis replied.
"We were playing Dauntless and Candor." Alex replied. "Gotta say you've got nice abs." He winked. Lewis shoved him.
"Stop being such a perv, you're not even gay." Alex laughed.
"You can still admire someone's body. I'm still waiting for Alice to give me a chance, she keeps breaking my heart."
Alice rolled her eyes. "You are totally not my type."
"Yeah you've got a penis for starters." Lewis replied. They all started laughing.
"Jamie, do you trust me to pick out the perfect first tattoo?" Alex was shaking his head at Jamie.
"What the hell, why not? I came to Dauntless to live life." Alice cheered and they walked into the tattoo shop.

Alice was speaking to Tori, Cameron, Alex and Lewis were talking about what to get. "I think you should get a flower, as you're so delicate." Lewis teased Cameron.
"It was one hangover." Lewis sighed.
"You didn't even drink that much." Alex replied.
"It was whatever you put in that drink." Jamie enjoyed listening to the groups banter, and he was happy that they had accepted him into their friendship group.
"See what you're missing Jamie?" Alex replied.
"I just wanted to get ready for the fights."
"You can see you've worked hard; you look more muscular." Alex complimented. Jamie blushed and looked down.
"Aww he's shy." Lewis teased.
Tori came over to the group and smiled, "Nice to see you Jamie, I was wondering where you would've picked."
"Hey Tori, good to see you too."
"Alice has told me that you wanted her to pick a design."
"Yeah." Jamie replied, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Don't look so worried, it's amazing." Alice beamed.
"Jamie, if you followed me."

The tattoo didn't hurt as much as he thought it would. Alice had chosen a phoenix to go down his right arm. The tattooing process didn't take long, they had used pads to burn the tattoo onto his skin. Lewis had ended up with flames wrapped around his wrists, Alice chose a black rose, Cameron had a crow and Alex had a dragon along his left leg.
"Shall we get a drink?" Jamie looked at Alex and shook his head.
"Not with the fights tomorrow."
"Have one." Alex replied.
Alice studied Jamie and laughed. "Alex, he's never drunk before."
Jamie blushed and nodded.
"Oh my god, we need to get him drunk."
"Not tonight." Lewis replied. "When the fights are over, we are going to party." Cameron cheered.
"Okay let's watch some of the cage fighting and call it a night after." Alex replied smiling. "It was nice being able to hang out with you Jamie."
"I've had fun." Jamie smiled.
"Good." Alice replied.

Eric had finished his paperwork and looked at the time. Late again he thought to himself. At least he didn't have to get up too early to train with Jamie, he just hoped he didn't fuck up his fight tomorrow. Eric stretched his back in his chair and stood up. Eric decided to have a couple of drinks before heading back to his apartment. He approached a bar and saw a head of spikey blue hair.
"Eric, you're alive. I haven't seen you in sooooooo long." Ryan laughed.
"I've been busy."
"Ugh huh. Busy doing who?" Ryan winked. Eric rolled his eyes. "Whiskey?" He asked.
"Yeah." Ryan had ordered them both a drink. They walked over to an empty booth and took a seat.
"So how is life with Eric?"
"Fine, just all this damn paperwork and training the pathetic initiates."
"Now now, they are the future of Dauntless." Ryan mocked, trying to put on Max's accent.
"That is such a bad impression." Eric laughed.
"Wow you remember how to laugh." Eric rolled his eyes. "So where have you been? I haven't seen you around in ages." Ryan asked.
"Been training an initiate."
"What just one?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"Because I want to."
"Eric, I have known you since we were in diapers, you don't just do stuff like that."
"He shows protentional. On his first day I caught him training on his own after hours."
"So?"
"We need people that are dedicated."
"Ugh huh. You know you sound like Max."
"I do not. We need good soldiers; he knows he was the weakest and did something about it."
"You mean you're training the Stiff?"
"Yes."
"Do you like him?"
Eric choked on his drink. "What?"
"I'm not stupid Eric, I've seen you two around together in the early hours."
"Are you spying on me?"
"No, I was on my way home."
"I swear you never do any work."
"Hey my role as Dauntless ambassador is very important. I keep all the factions happy with us."
"You mean sitting there in meetings and not taking any notice." Ryan laughed.
"Seriously though, you like him don't you." Eric paused. "Did something happen?" Eric pushed his hand through his hair again and sighed, downing his whiskey.
"I'm getting another drink."
"Nope you're staying there, I'll get these." Ryan disappeared back to the bar and Eric went deep into thought. He had admitted to Jamie that he had gotten under his skin. He had remembered the Stiff looking at him during the aptitude tests. Those piercing blue eyes had gotten his attention, the look of hopelessness that was in them. It was a quick look but his face had stuck. He had noticed Jamie staring at him on the roof and Eric had noticed that he felt pleased that it was Jamie that was there in the training room and one of the other transfers. Fuck, I like him. Eric thought.

Ryan came back with a bottle of whiskey and two glasses. "Whatcha thinking about?"
"Nothing."
"Liar. So back to my last question, did something happen?"
"Yeah." Eric poured himself another glass and downed it.
"What happened?"
"We kissed, and you know, foreplay with clothes on." Ryan raised his eyebrows.
"Doesn't sound like you."
"He's a virgin."
"So? Usually wouldn't stop you."
"I don't know."
"You like him?"
"No."
"Liar."
"Stop saying that." Eric started to raise his voice a bit.
"Did I touch a nerve?" Ryan smirked taking a drink.
"I think I do like him."
"Wow, enough for you to want a relationship?"
"I don't know."
"See isn't it easier just talking about it? Don't you feel lighter?"
Eric gave Ryan a death stare. Ryan laughed. They began talking about other things after, Ryan giving Eric a break on his questioning, until next time.
