Their First One Together

Jane woke up first Christmas morning with his pregnant wife cuddled up against him. For the first time in a very long time, he was happy for the holidays. He kissed her temple gently and slipped out of bed with as little disruption as possible. He heard Lisbon groan a little as her warmth and security disappeared.

He passed through the living room taking in the aroma of the pine tree in the corner. He grabbed the empty pizza box from the coffee table from the night before and took it with him to the kitchen. He put a kettle of water on the stove and started the coffee maker.

He stood looking out the window of their newly finished cabin admiring the frost on the trees while sipping his tea. A lot had changed in a year, a lot would change by the next year too he realized thinking about their child on the way. It would be his and Lisbon's only Christmas ever as an actual couple alone. He was determined to give her a Christmas that was truly theirs.

Jane smiled, lost in his thoughts, until he felt very cold hands creeping under his pajama shirt around his waist and landing on his chest. He shivered when she kissed him between his shoulders.

"Merry Christmas" she said, way more chipper than he'd come to expect this early in the morning.

He set his teacup down, turned in her arms, and leaned in to give her a gentle kiss. "Merry Christmas. Your hands are very very cold" he said grabbing them from around his waist and drawing them up to his mouth to warm them up.

She grinned at him, he kissed her again and poured her a cup of coffee.

"You left me to freeze in the bed" she pointed out.

"Only to make sure you had your coffee"

"Thank you" she took it from him and leaned against the counter next to him, her head resting on his shoulder.

Jane and Lisbon had never gotten each other anything for Christmas, they didn't start this year either. They had picked out a Christmas tree together from their own land, Jane cut it down, and they decorated it. For either of them, it was the best Christmas they'd ever had.

Even Lisbon's "perfect" one with Pike from the year prior was filled thinking of Jane spending Christmas alone.

Jane's Christmas' with his wife and daughter were pretty great, but he didn't appreciate them like he did this one. They were big, flashy, and something he just took for granted. He'd give anything to have them back so he could appreciate them, but since he couldn't he'd learned to appreciate what he had right in front of him.

Jane and Lisbon spent the day preparing breakfast together, enjoying some quality couple time, and were now sitting on the swing on the front porch envisioning their future with a child.

Eventually it got a little too chilly for Lisbon and she snuggled into Jane's side a little closer. He noticed, "want to go back inside?"

She looked at the time and her stomach started to rumble, "how about we go out for some Chinese?"

He gave her a big grin, the type that made his eyes twinkle. He kissed her head and jumped up, "I would love that."
