Chapter Eight: Through the Mountain

As the sun broke over the horizon I mounted my bike and prepared to make my way through Mount Moon. I found a water stone near the Pokémon Center before I rode into the mountain and saw some interesting Pokémon as I traveled. I caught a female Chewtle that I named Venus after the only female Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. After that I did not expect to find another water type Pokémon in the mountain but I did end up catching a male Tympole that I named Seisma. As I traveled, I ended up fighting off a bunch of members of Team Rocket and a geek guarding a pair of fossils that I beat before taking the Dome Fossil. Before I could get out of the mountain, I was stopped by one of the Team Rocket admins named Archer.

Archer started off the battle by sending out a level 18 Impidimp who used fake out which caused Cathlulu to flinch before she could do anything. When Cathlulu was able to move she seeded the field with toxic spikes before being paralyzed by Impidimp using a thunder wave. After slowing her down Impidimp bit her making Cathlulu eat her oran berry before she sprayed acid onto the prankster Pokémon. Impidimp ate its own oran berry before biting Cathlulu again only to fall to Cathlulu's continued spray of acid. Archer did not stop with his first Pokémon down as he sent out his ace a level 21 Mightyena that wasted no time in biting Cathlulu to knock her out while suffering from the poison of the toxic spikes. I sent Max out to deal with the issue as I knew he would have little trouble. The Mightyena started to bulk up with a howl but Max took it out with a quick covet leading to Archer sending out his final Pokémon a level 19 Houndour. The Houndour let out a burst of hidden power before falling to Max's aqua tail ending the battle in my favor. With the battle finished I exited the mountain and started to make my way towards Cerulean City and the second gym.

After getting into town I parked at the Pokémon Center and got my team healed before hearing that Bill the creator of the Pokémon storage system was at his house on Route 25. I eventually decided to go check out what the researcher was doing up at his place on Route 25 after fishing up some new team members on Route 24. Before I could even get on the bridge to challenge the trainers along the path I was stopped by Gary and challenged to a Pokémon battle. Gary started off the battle with a level 18 Kirlia who used confusion after Cathlulu set up toxic spikes over the field. Cathlulu replied with an acid spray before Kirlia used another confusion. As Cathlulu was spraying out more acid to finish off Kirlia Gary decided to switch his Pokémon out and for his starter a now level 21 Ivysaur who tanked the attack. I switched Pokey in with the hope that he would have more affect with her psychic type moves but Ivysaur took her out with a barrage of bullet seeds before Pokey could react. I sent out Max who was put to sleep by Ivysaur using sleep powder before Max was able to do anything. Max then fell to another barrage of bullet seeds from Ivysaur. I sent out Rosa who took three hits from a bullet seed from Ivysaur before replying with an aura beam. Ivysaur continued to barrage Rosa with bullet seeds only to fall to a second aura beam. Gary sent out a level 19 Staravia so before it could do anything I replaced Rosa with Lanturn who tanked a quick attack. Gary wisely switched Staravia out with his Kirlia who tanked a shock wave before Lanturn used confuse ray causing Kirlia to hurt itself. Lanturn then used a bubble beam to finish off Kirlia and making Gary send Staravia back out into the battle. Staravia used a quick attack to weaken Lanturn as much as possible and even survived a shock wave. Staravia managed to use another quick attack before falling to Lanturn as he used another bubble beam. Gary raged as he sent out his last Pokémon a level 20 Rockruff that quickly fell to a bubble beam from Lanturn. After the battle Gary threw a Poke Ride system at me and ran off while insulting me.

I healed my Pokémon up before making my way north along the challenger bridge quickly taking them all out even the Team Rocket recruiter at the end to earn a nugget before I went fishing on Route 24 and trained my team up to level 27 before I continued to deal with the trainers on Route 25 as it started to rain which my team seemed to enjoy greatly as I made my way to Bill's place. Once there I met a Clefairy that spoke English and claimed to be Bill. I followed the instructions of the Pokémon and turned him back into a human before talking with him and receiving a ticket to the S.S. Ann so that I could take a tour of the ship before it left port. After leaving Bill's place I went out as the rain continued to come down, I spoke with the purple haired boy as he waxed on about the beauty of public displays of affection even though there was a quarantine. Once he noticed me, he introduced himself as Bugsy a colleague of Falkner before asking if I wanted to battle him and claimed to be strong even though he used bug types. He started off the battle with a level 25 Ariados that used poison fang after Cathlulu spread toxic spikes over the field. Cathlulu used a bubble beam to weaken Ariados before falling to a critical hit from another poison fang. I sent out Nigel who took a shadow sneak from the spider Pokémon before knocking it out with an air cutter. Bugsy then sent out a level 25 Scizor who tanked an air cutter before escaping with a u-turn. The u-turn brought out a level 25 Ledian that got off an ice punch before another air cutter from Nigel took out the lady bug Pokémon. Bugsy brought Scizor back out to receive another air cutter before eating a sitrus berry and using a u-turn to replace himself with a level 25 Scyther. Scyther used sword dance to strengthen himself as Nigel used air cutter to weaken the mantis Pokémon. Scyther's strengthening paid off as he used an ariel ace that took Nigel out of the fight. I sent out Venus to keep myself in the fight but it was almost pointless as Scyther used brick break to nearly knock out Venus but the turtle survived to use a rock tomb to knock out the mantis Pokémon. Since she was so weak, I had Venus use aqua jet to get in a hit before Bugsy's final Pokémon the persistent Scizor took her out. I sent out Pony who was lower level as he was still being trained up to try and finish the fight. Scizor used a bullet punch to weaken her but she prevailed and used a bubble beam to end the fight. Bugsy claimed to be a bit disappointed with himself and lonely causing him to feel down. After listening to him fuss he gave me TM 89 u-turn. Followed by five nest balls. With that done I went back to town and changed out my team before heading to the gym.

The first thing I noticed upon entering the gym was that it was a giant pool. I went straight ahead following the path laid out before me and was challenged by the first understudy a male swimmer named Luis who had two Pokémon. The first was a level 19 Shellder that Cathlulu surrounded with Toxic spikes before the clam Pokémon hit her with two icicle spears. Cathlulu retaliated with a sludge knocking the Shellder out who was replaced by a level 20 Tirtouga. A bubble beam weakened the rock turtle before it bit Cathlulu. Cathlulu then ended the battle with another bubble beam. The next understudy that I came across was a picnicker named Diana who only had a level 22 Drednaw. Cathlulu used a bubble beam that had very little affect and was greatly hurt by a rock throw so I switched her out for Rosa who took a rock throw much better. Rosa ended the fight with a simple mega drain restoring her health to full. Leaving me with only the gym leader left to face.

Misty the gym leader explained that she had a policy of all-out offensive with water type Pokémon before our battle started. I noticed that she held four Pokémon and led off with a level 26 Frogadier. Frogadier used flip turn to replace himself with a level 27 Lanturn as Cathulu spread toxic spikes around the field. I replaced Cathlulu with Seisma predicting an electric type attack which Lanturn did not disappoint attempting a parabolic charge. Seisma set up an Aqua ring to try and protect herself only to take a scald to the face and receive a burn. Seisma started an uproar only to be felled after two more scalds. I sent out Venus who used Rock tomb to weaken and slow Lanturn down before she took a parabolic charge greatly damaging her health before a repeat of the interaction finished Venus off. I sent Rosa out to try and turn the battle around which Lanturn was not having as they traded mega drains and parabolic charges each hurting the other while healing themselves. This exchange went on for six turns before the Lanturn fell and leaving Rosa only a little below full health. Frogadier then came out and was poisoned by the spikes that were still on the ground only to flip turn out to a level 26 Floatzel that was poisoned and hurt by Rosa's mega drain. Floatzel used hidden power before falling to a bullet seed that hit twice and was replaced by Misty's ace a level 27 Starmie. Misty switched Starmie out for Frogadier who took Rosa's mega drain and was hurt by the poison before he could do anything. Frogadier used ice punch to hurt Rosa before falling to a bullet seed storm of four hits. Misty was left with only Starmie who was poisoned by the toxic spikes after reentering the battlefield. Starmie took Rosa out with a psyshock and tried to do the same with Lanturn that I sent out only to receive a shock wave in return. Starmie finished off my Pokémon with a scald and forced me to send in Max. Starmie use recover to heal as Max missed with a play rough. After tanking a psyshock Max hit Starmie with a play rough nearly knocking the Starmie out. After tanking another psyshock Max ended the fight with an aqua tail. Misty was gracious in her defeat giving me the Cascade Badge along with her favorite TM, 03 which contained flip turn.

With the badge in hand, I made my way to the Pokémon Center and got my team healed up before I went to sleep for the night. In the morning I collected my motorcycle and left Cerulean City heading south towards Route 5 and my future adventures and see what was going on in the S.S. Ann as well as collect my third and possibly one of the hardest badges as it was for the electric Pokémon gym, Vermillion City here I come.
