Chapter 4

Diamond Stray Delta

Crane was fighting. Which was something she did not very much like doing, but at least she was covering her sibling's backs.

"Crane, look out," shouted Reed, their substitute Big wings and group leader.

Ducking, Crane avoids the Icewing spear that her brother had been warning her about and called back,

"Thanks, Reed,"

Reed was a good Big Wings; he was doing the best he could. But they all knew that he was not their Big wings. Their real Big Wings had been sold to their Aunt Asha by their mother, Cattail. The six siblings were still angry about that. They could have been an even greater team if they only had their Big Wings.

"Crane," called her sister, Sora, breaking Crane out of her thoughts, "come on the battle can be ours."

"I am behind you, sis," called Crane diving after her sister and into the thick of the battle.

Clawing an Icewing here, breathing fire at another one there, smacking a couple with her tail.

Crane did not enjoy fighting even though she was rather good at it. Crane would much rather spend her days playing in the mud swamps with her sibs. Crane often dreamed about what life would be like if when the War was over. But right now, Crane did not have time for daydreaming, she was in a fight for her life and her sibling's lives. She had to watch Sora's tail and make sure that she lived.

"Sora!" Crane called to her sister seeing Icewing diving at her sister's claws extended.

"Thanks," called her sister duck and racking her claws a crossed the Icewings throat sending it plummeting to the ground.

"Any time," called Crane winching as the dead Icewing hit the ground.

Crane did not like death. Whether it was a Mudwing or an Icewing or any other dragons for that matter, although she did care more for Mudwings than Icewings or Seawings.

"Crane! Above you!" yelled Sora in a panicked voice

Crane looked up just in time to see a female Icewing descending on her with a wicked smile. Crane did not have time to move out of the way, breath fire, or anything.

The Icewing slashed her razor-sharp claws at Crane's throat. Crane had just enough time to pull herself back and avoid instant death. However, Crane did not avoid injury altogether, the claws racked a crossed the base of her throat and the start of her chest. The blow hurt more than Crane thought possible.

She staggered and her wings faltered. Then an Icewing tail smacked her a crossed her head and the last thing she hears was Sora yelling her name.
