Chapter 17

Skywing Palace

Sandstar was bored. She and the other weird sandwing, who had introduced herself as Sunny, had been hanging in these gilded cages for days.

"I wish I was an animus right now," said Sandstar looking around the empty hall, all the dragons were at the arena.

"What would you do if you were?" asked Sunny curiously

"I would enchant these doors to open," said Sandstar simply

"But what about your soul?" asked Sunny

"I would enchant something to protect my soul for the curse," said Sandstar as if it was the simplest thing in the world.

"How would you do that?" asked Sunny curiosity and something else in her voice.

"Since neither of us is animus, I guess it doesn't matter," said Sandstar gloomily

"What if I was an animus?" asked Sunny hesitantly

"What if I could see the future?" replied Sandstar, using the same tone that Frostbite used.

"I can see the future," said Sunny, "and I am an animus."

"Can you read minds, too?" asked Sandstar excitedly

"Yes," said Sunny sadly, "I am a bit of a freak, aren't I?"

"I can read minds, too," said Sandstar comfortingly

"How?" asked Sunny, "I cannot hear your mind."

"The stone in this bracelet blocks mind-reading," said Sandstar pointing to her armband that she had been wear when she had been captures

"Oh," said Sunny peering at the armband.

"So, could you let us out of here?" Sandstar hopefully

"Maybe, but what about my soul?" said Sunny

"Here," said Sandstar taking off one of her numerous bracelets and tossing it to Sunny through the bars of her cage.

"Say 'I enchant this bracelet to protect my soul from all ill effects of animus magic' and your soul should be protected," said Sandstar confidently

"What if it doesn't work?" asked Sunny anxiety seeping into her voice.

"Well, I learned about this spell from my animus Seawing friend, and he hasn't lost his soul and is one of the sweetest and nicest dragons I have ever meet, not to mention handsome," said Sandstar slightly dreamy towards the end of her explanation.

"Okay," said Sunny not commenting on the obvious crush since that was exactly how she and Starflight had felt about each other before Glory made them talk to each other about it. So Sunny merely repeated the spell Sandstar had given her.

"Now enchant the doors," said Sandstar

"I enchant these doors to open," said Sunny, and the cage doors opened.

"Let's go find your friends," Sandstar called as she ran toward the arena

When they got there, the sight that meets them was strange. The sky was full of the prisoner who had been chain to tall rock towers and was now flying around in confusion, trying to decide whether to fly away or fight. Queen Burn was gone, and Queen Scarlet was laying on the floor writhing in pain as the side of her face melded. There was a dark cloud of dragons which Sandstar recognized as Nightwings quickly disappearing into the distance.

Oleander and the other Rainwing, and Mudwing had freed themselves, the other Rainwing seemed to have shot venom at Queen Scarlet and the Mudwing and jumped into the arena to help the Nightwing Dragonet of Destiny while Oleander was stopping Nightshade from chasing after the retreating Nightwings.

"What is happening?" cried Sunny looking around confused and a little scared, "where is Starflight."

"The Nightwings took him," cried the blue Seawing landing on the next to the strange Rainwing.
