Kion discussed the plan with his parents and Kovu at Pride Rock. He then went to his Guard to ask for their help too and gave Ono an assignment. When everything was clear, Simba, Nala, Kovu and the Lion Guard all started to head towards the Termite Mounds.
Kion was extremely nervous. He really hoped nothing would get out of hand.
"Hey, are you alright?" Fuli asked, who was now walking next to him.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Just a bit nervous." Kion replied.
"Don't worry, I know you can handle this."
"I sure hope so..."
"You know we've got your back." Fuli smiled.
"Yeah, thanks Fuli."
The border towards the Outlands was now in sight. Kion stood on the border with everyone behind him and looked for a moment towards the Outlands. He then took a deep breath.
"Alright everyone, let's do this. 'Till the Pride Lands end..." Kion began.
"LION GUARD DEFEND!" everyone else finished.
Kion jogged into the Outlands with everyone following him.
As they arrived at their destination, they were immediately stopped by some lionesses.
"What do you want?!" one of them asked.
The lionesses started to spread out to make a circle around the Pride Landers. Even though they were still pretty hurt, they wanted to protect their territorium at all cost.
"We want to talk to Zira." Kion responded confidently.
"I'm right here." Zira responded, who showed herself behind the lionesses. She made her way into the circle.
Kion took a deep breath once again. "Zira, you and your clan are still a danger to the Pride Lands, even though you were exiled long ago. We need you to leave the Termite Mounds."
"Leave our home?! Taking the Pride Lands isn't enough for you?!" she snarled.
"If you keep attacking us while being exiled, then no."
"We are NOT leaving our home! Stupid cub, you think we can just find a new home like that? This is not how life works!"
"You're right. That's why I assigned Ono to find you a new home. Ono?"
Ono flew towards Kion to stand next to him, facing Zira. "I've scanned the area and after a long flight, I've found a plains with enough grass, water, preys and even dens for your clan to stay. If you keep going east, then you should find it within a couple of days." he explained.
Zira refused to listen. "I don't care! This is our home whether you like it or not! We're not leaving just because you're asking nicely."
Kion looked around and saw the lionesses agreeing with their leader. He sighed and looked at Kovu.
Kovu was making a concerned expression, but he knew it was his turn now. He took a deep breath before speaking up. "Mother, you wanted to have the Pride Lands as your home since forever, but the only thing you truly care about is taking down Simba. You can't do that. If you don't leave, then..."
Zira interrupted him. "HUSH! Don't you dare tell me what to do, traitor! YOU ruined the plan to take over the Pride Lands! YOU let all of us get hurt! YOU made us your enemies, and it's ALL - YOUR - FAULT! You're no son of mine. You're a disgrace!"
Kovu listened as his mother let all her anger out to the brown lion. He knew she wouldn't be happy, but he didn't expect her to be this mad. He looked at her with fear in his eyes and with his ears down. She's right. he thought. It is all my fault...
"That's enough!" Kion yelled. "Leave the Termite Mounds before we make you!" he growled as he got into pouncing position.
"We will NEVER leave! Everyone, ATTACK!" Zira screamed.
Zira jumped, trying to pounce on Kion. But before she reached the lion cub, Kion used the Roar of the Elders, sending her flying away. The lionesses around the Pride Landers wanted to attack them, but the wind of the Roar was too strong to reach them.
"Everyone, let's go!" Kion said when he was done roaring.
The Pride Landers were going deeper into the Termite Mounds and Kion was looking for something specific: the termite mounds where the termites live. As they were running, the lionesses chased them, trying to stop them. But since they're still weak, they were quite slow and couldn't keep up.
Soon, Kion found a cluster of termite mounds. He roared at them, destroying the mounds and killing almost every termite.
"Kion, there's one big cluster over there!" Ono said, pointing towards a different direction with his wing.
The yellow cub went to that direction too with still everyone behind him. Once he found the mounds, he roared at them as well. He then saw another cluster, went over there with the Pride Landers behind him, and destroyed every single mound he could find.
"Any more termite mounds, Ono?" Kion asked.
The egret scanned the area. "Not that I can see!"
"You..." a voice said, who was clearly out of breath. "What have you done?!"
Zira chased them all the way through out the area. Kion turned around and went over to her.
"I'm sorry I had to do this, but I hope you will go to your new home now that you don't have anymore food left in the Outlands." Kion explained.
Zira caught up her breath and growled. As much as she wanted to pounce on the cub and kill him right there and then, she knew she would get blown away again if she tried. "You think THAT'S gonna stop me? Well you thought wrong, we're NOT going anywhere!"
Nala decided to step in. "Zira, we don't want you and your clan to starve to death. We know the Outlands is a horrible place and we genuinely want to give you a better home. We simply can't trust you this close to the Pride Lands, but we hope you can find peace in the east."
"Peace?! I will NEVER find peace after what Simba did to Scar and to us! I will do whatever it takes to follow Scar's footsteps!" Zira replied.
Then, there were some whispers between the Outlanders.
"You still want to stay, even without any food?" Bosa asked.
"How dare you questioning me?! Do you just take word from those Pride Landers?"
"Look around, Zira. As much as I don't like it, we can't stay here. They're protecting their home and say they found a new home for us far away. We have to at least try it."
"NO! We will stay here until we take down Simba!"
Bosa was stunned. "You promised us to live in a better place if we stayed loyal to you! This isn't about food, you just want revenge on Simba!"
"That's what I've been trying to say. She's using you, all of you, just so she can be happy when Simba is gone." Kovu said.
"Shut up! You have no right to speak to us after what you did to us!" Zira snarled towards Kovu.
Bosa noticed how Zira's own son turned against her. She knew cubs wouldn't do that unless their mother did something terrible. It made her realize Zira was indeed using her and all the other lionesses. Even her own cubs! Bosa now knew that Zira was a terrible leader, who only cared about no one but herself. Not even her cubs.
"That cub of yours is right. I've never seen it until now. Stay here if you want, but I'm out." she said.
She turned her back on Zira and started heading east. The Outlanders were whispering, considering if they should follow Bosa.
"You'll die if you're leaving me!" Zira snarled.
Bosa kept on walking, ignoring her former leader. This got Zira extremely mad. She charged towards Bosa and pounced on her. She then continued attacking her, scratching and biting her. The other lionesses immediately came to help Bosa and pushed Zira off of her. Bosa was now free, but hurt. The lionesses then proceeded to attack their leader. A total of six lionesses kept on attacking Zira, who was completely defenseless. She yelped and tried to escape, but failed miserably.
Not long after, everyone stopped attacking and took a distance from Zira, who was bleeding all over the place. She coughed up some blood as she laid in her own pool of blood that was getting larger and larger. Then, she stopped breathing. She passed away.
"No, mother!" a voice called.
Vitani hid with her brother behind a rock, watching the whole scene. She ran towards her mother with Nuka right behind her. The lionesses gave them some more space, so they could grieve. Nuka and Vitani didn't need to check if their mother was still alive. It was obvious she was gone.
Tears were running down Vitani's cheeks. Nuka held her with his left foreleg, comforting his little sister.
"Mother... Please, come back..." Vitani said.
She then bursted into tears and buried her head into Nuka's chest. Nuka also dropped some tears. "It's okay, sis. She's in a better place now." he said.
Everyone looked as the two grieved over their mother, not knowing what to do. Then, Kovu slowly walked towards his mother, wanting to grieve as well. But Nuka stopped him.
"You... You little termite! You did this!" Nuka snarled.
Kovu immediately stopped walking, looking scared at his brother. Vitani let go of Nuka, charged towards Kovu and hit him with her paw, not using her claws.
"I HATE YOU!" she screamed, before hitting him again on his head.
"I'm sorry!" is all Kovu could say.
Vitani kept on hitting him, and Kovu didn't stop her. He felt like he deserved it. It was him after all who didn't want to be a part of Zira's plan. And that escalated to her death...
It broke Kion's heart seeing his friend getting beaten up by his sister. But from the looks of it, Kovu didn't want to stop her, so he figured he shouldn't get involved.
"Should we stop her?" Besthe asked.
"No, this is something between siblings only." Kion responded.
After a few more hits, Bosa stepped in. "Enough, Vitani!" she said, getting between Vitani and Kovu. "I know you're upset, but this isn't Kovu's fault. Zira wasn't a good leader to us, and Kovu was the first one to realize that."
"She's still my mother!" Vitani replied, still sobbing. Even though she wanted to be strong, she couldn't hold her tears once she saw her mother die right in front of her.
"Listen. Zira is gone and there's nothing we can do about it. All we can do now, is head east to find a new home. If we can trust the Pride Landers..." Bosa said, glancing at the king and queen.
"I assure you, we're telling the truth. All we want is for you to find a better home, far away from the Pride Lands." Simba said.
Bosa knew Pride Landers wouldn't lie. They just weren't like that. She figured she could trust them.
"Then that's settled." she replied. She then turned to the Outlanders. "Everyone, it's time for a new era. Who's with me?"
The lionesses looked at one another and gave each other a nod. Then they all stepped forward, accepting Bosa as their new leader. Even Nuka and Vitani stepped forward. Even though they were still upset about their mother's death, the only thing they could do now is leave the past behind and move forward.
Bosa smiled, happy to lead the Outlanders to their new home. She then glanced at Kovu. "What about you, Kovu? Would you like to be a part of the new era?"
"Eh, well... I..." Kovu didn't know what to say. If he could choose, he would want to be with Kion, in the Pride Lands. But he didn't want to disappoint his family once more, especially after they forgave him.
Bosa noticed what Kovu actually wanted. "It's okay. If you belong in the Pride Lands, then that's where you should stay. You'll always be welcome with us."
The brown lion smiled. "Thank you."
"Everyone, let's head to our new home." Bosa said, heading east. The rest followed.
"Good bye." Kovu said, looking at Nuka and Vitani walking away from him. They glanced back with a neutral face, not responding, and kept on walking behind Bosa and her clan. Kovu sighed as he flattened his ears, looking at the ground.
After a few moments, the Outlanders were out of sight. The only Outlander that was still here, was Zira's corpse. Kovu could now approach her and have a good look at her. He sat down as he observed his mother. There were scratches everywhere and the pool of blood was still fresh. She had some bruises as well, but it were the deep cuts that became fatal to the lioness.
Kion watched as his friend was grieving. He then faced the Pride Landers. "You guys should go home. I'll keep an eye on Kovu." he said.
Everyone nodded and headed towards the Pride Lands.
Kion then made his way to Kovu, who began to sob. He sat next to the brown cub and placed his left paw on Kovu's right shoulder. "Do you want me to stay?" he asked with a soft and caring tone.
Kovu nodded, still looking at his mother. Kion moved closer so his pelt would touch Kovu's, and held his foreleg on the brown lion's shoulder. Kovu continued crying. Even though he knew she was a bad leader, maybe even a bad mother... She was still family. The yellow cub understood and wanted to be there for him as much as he can.
Half an hour had passed and Kovu was still devastated by Zira's death. Kion doesn't blame him. He couldn't imagine losing his own mother... But he figured Kovu wouldn't feel any better if they'd stay here longer. "Maybe it's best if we start heading home." Kion said.
Kovu nodded. "You're right." he said, still sobbing.
Kion let go of Kovu and started walking towards Pride Rock.
"Good bye, mother." he said, as he followed Kion.
