"I really am okay," Jack smiled. Kate stopped and recoiled. She had been walking with his arm over her shoulder although he didn't need any additional stability.
"Sorry," she whispered, embarrassed.
"It's cute." The two shared a smile that gave Kate butterflies.
The car ride home had consisted of them sharing missed glances while struggling to pay attention to Aaron's story about gym class. Jack sat back in his seat, his head turned towards Kate, inhaling the smell of her shampoo. His eyes were closed as he enjoyed the moment and the sun shining. He hadn't appreciated those moments before; he was going to cherish every moment moving forward.
"Dad! Do you want to go play basketball?" Aaron asked.
"No, no. Absolutely not," Kate interjected. "You have to go easy on your dad, he still really hurt his head. We have to be careful."
"What about a jog?" Aaron asked.
"I'm a little tired, Buddy. Can we go tomorrow?"
"Just you and I?"
"Just us men," Jack smiled. That seemed to appease the child, who ran back to his bedroom to play.
Kate felt a lump in her throat. She hadn't expected to be so taken back with the idea of Jack in her bedroom again. It felt surreal. He'd been there before and she'd fantasized about his return but in the moment she felt nervous and aroused. No matter what problems Jack and Kate had, none of them were between the sheets.
"You're quiet," Jack whispered. "And far away."
"I'm sorry," Kate shook her head, shaking the negative thoughts. "I was just…"
"Worried. I know you were worried…" unsurprisingly, Kate didn't argue it. "Come here…" he patted the bed next to him. When Kate complied he pulled her into his embrace. "You're nervous."
"No," she lied.
"Kate, I know you." He lifted her chin with two fingers, offering a warm smile to ease her conflicted mind. "It's okay if you were worried. You don't have to feel nervous about being vulnerable.
Kate stroked his cheek with a sad smile. "I just wish things could stay this way," she whispered, pulling him into an embrace. He'd always been the one to hold her; it felt nice to feel him in her arms, his head nestled on her chest.
"Why can't they?" Jack asked, pulling her into a kiss. Kate moaned as she helplessly felt her body melting for him. She'd fantasized about him so many times before the accident that it didn't feel real. He pulled her so she straddled him, her hips rocking against the bulge in his jeans. His hands roamed under her shirt, slowly to prolong the feel of her soft skin.
Kate's long and slender fingers fiddled with the button on his jeans, unable to resist another moment. She lifted her arms so he could take off her top; he captured her breast in his mouth, gently tugging at her nipple to elicit the little mewls she made.
In no time they were interwoven, their bodies connected so they were one. They moved in perfect rhythm. Kate held herself up so her body pressed into his and her mouth rested on his shoulder. As she came, she bit down into his shoulder, leaving a mark.
"I can't wait to hold you in my arms all night," Jack whispered after they'd finished.
"Jack? Do you promise this is a fresh start?" She whispered.
"Of course," Jack said with a big gulp. "Can you promise the same thing?"
Kate lifted her head from his chest. "Of course."
Jack watched her lay her head back. He scratched her scalp and ran his fingers through her curls. He hoped she meant it; he hoped she could keep the promise.
He hoped she'd still love him when she realized he'd faked short term amnesia just to get closer to Kate. He never imagined she'd do the same to him.
