Natalie had released Haley and given her some pain meds for if her face hurt her. Grace was in her car seat and Jay and Platt took them to a big truck. Blacked out windows, the wheels almost taller than Haley. Climbing in the back Jay slotted Grace's car-seat into the holder. Hayley was starting to worry; Jay felt the anxiety rolling from her.

"Hey, it's OK, look at me. Take a breath, you're both going to be fine, we are not going to let anyone hurt you OK. That's it, keep breathing, OK?" Hayley was looking into his eyes, they looked like he had seen a million woes. Yet he still stood in the hospital parking lot calming her down. What had she done to deserve this? She was nobody to him. It wouldn't matter to him if she slipped out the car and ran.

"No! Hayley, don't do it," he warned as she was brought back to him. Tears fell from her face as she shook. Jay climbed in the drivers seat and pulled away, locking the doors with a button to his left. He drove around Chicago, taking random turns till he was sure they hadn't been followed, turning into an underground garage. Jumping out of the truck and into a lift, the four went up to the apartment, Hayley looked round, it seemed so big.

The kitchen was to the left, modern and clean, to the right was a large sofa on the wall a TV and fire. To the right of the TV was a hallway that led to the bedrooms and a bathroom. Jay walked up behind Hayley placing his hand on her arm, she cowered to the floor.

"Hey I'm sorry, I was just asking if you were, OK?" his hands in the air.

"Sorry, yeah I'm good. Listen I need to sort dinner for Grace is there a store near or is there food in? I have some money!"

"Dinner is sorted Randy brought some shepherds pie and veg. He knows it's your favourite, actually it's both of your favourites. Who knew!"

"Omg he's amazing how is he doing? It seems like forever since I've seen him." Hayley set about sorting Grace sitting her in the high chair that was at the table. They sat and ate, all getting along as if they had been friends forever. After dinner Hayley took Grace to a room and got her to sleep. After showering she went into the kitchen. The dishes were done and cleaned away. Jay sat on the sofa watching the re-runs of the Blackhawks game.

"You OK, you need anything?" Jay asked quietly.

"No thank you, I'm good. I'm just getting some water." Joining Jay on the sofa, she tucked her feet beneath her. Jay turned to look at her, she had all but disappeared into the corner. She looked broken and fragile. His heart skipped a beat, she was stunning, her eyes an aqua colour, it was like she was part of him that had been missing all his life. He had felt love before, the stuttering of his heart, the dry mouth, the overall feeling needing to be with the person. This is different its all of them and more, he felt a calmness wash over him.

"What is this place?" She asked him.

"It's a safe house, we use it for witnesses and people who need to disappear for a week or two." He smiled at her, their eyes connecting and holding their gaze. Trudy voice broke the spell they seemed to be under.

"Right, I am going to bed, please come knock on if you need me Haley, Jay you are on breakfast in the morning, she knows my order, good night" Trudy said as she walked into the bedroom opposite the one Hayley had put Grace in.

"It's not what you think you know. He's my step-dad, he's not Grace's Dad, he took off when I found out about her. I moved back in with my Mom and then she crashed the car. He was good to me until Grace was a month old. As soon as I said I was going back to work, so I could get our own place, he just flipped. Everyday there was too much noise or I was late with dinner or from shopping." Looking at Jay she realised that she had just randomly blurted that out. "Omg I'm so sorry I have no idea why I just told you that." Tears pooled in her eyes and Jay's heart broke for her. Jumping up Hayley went to her room and climbed into bed. She closed her eyes and cried some more. She tried to be quiet but Jay still heard her. He wanted to go into the bedroom with her and hold her. It wasn't right for him to do it though. He was a Detective and it would be wrong. He stayed on the sofa, messaged Adam Ruzek. He was going to have to go before he did something stupid and ruined any chances with her in the future.

Hayley woke to the sun in her eyes. She took a deep breath and smiled, she was free from him. Even if he didn't go to prison she wasn't going back. She turned her head to look at Grace in the crib. Empty, jumping up she ran out of the bedroom and into the kitchen. Adam stood in the kitchen, Hayley froze, fear crippling her.

"Who are you? Where is Jay and Trudy?" she managed to stutter.

"Hey its OK, I'm Adam I work with Jay. He's had to go work on the original case, so you have me for a while. Is that, OK? He came in to talk to you gave you coffee and brought Grace out, I thought you knew he was leaving."

"its OK, I just don't know you is all. I know Trudy and Will, Dr Halstead, so I was worried when I saw you. Is all. That's all. Sorry. Hey princess Mommy didn't hear you this morning. Did you sleep well." She continues to talk to Grace as she plays with the porridge on the tray.

"I'm sorry if I scared you, do you want a coffee? Can I get you some breakfast?" Adam asked.

"No, I'm OK thank you. I am going to bath her, and get dressed. I will be out to clean up in a minute. Thank you for watching her for me."

Adam cleaned the kitchen before Hayley came back out. A text from Kim said there would be a delivery by 10am. Hayley came from the bedroom dressed with Grace also dressed. Jay had called, Trudy had called, and Hank was on his way. Hayley had met Hank so was OK with him coming. She had sat on a comfy chair with Grace blocked in by Hayley's legs.

Hank arrived at the same time as the delivery so brought it up with him. There was a big bag of toys for Grace and bags of clothes and toiletries for them both. Hayley was in shock.

"What is this, thank you but it's too much, I have some money in my savings I'll get it too you as."

"Hayley. Its OK calm down, it's all been sorted. You and Grace are going to be here a week or two. We need to keep her busy. Look we need some photos and a statement from you. Kim is on her way over. You met yesterday. OK?"

Hayley nodded and tried to take in all the toys in front of her. Picking up a box she opened some stacking blocks. Passing them to Grace who clapped happily. Within an hour Hayley was in the bedroom with Kim. Photos had been taken of her injuries. Leaving the room Kim told her to take however long she needed. Kim sat on the sofa, deflated and sad. Grace was in front of her on the floor surrounded by all the toys she had been gifted.

Hayley sat on the floor by the window. Tears stained her face, she felt useless again. Like she had failed Grace. Instead of being at home in her own bed with her own toys she was here, hiding, being protected because Hayley was too weak to protect her. The door opened and Jay stepped in, the only light was from the lamp by the bed. It highlighted the tears that ran down her face. Jay couldn't stop himself, he was sat beside her, engulfed her in a hug. The pieces of his life slotted together, she was home. Whether it happened now or in ten years, she was what he had been searching for all his life. Hayley folded into him, tears fell, she couldn't explain how she felt the tears just consumed her.

They sat like that for an hour, Jay sat tracing his hands up and down her back. Playing with her hair, the scent of her shampoo assaulted his senses. As she calmed, she opened up, told him how she was feeling, that she knew this was the best thing to ever happen but she felt so guilty about Grace. That she was in this situation, a knock at the door stopped her from talking.

"Dinner is here Grace is asleep. She fed and changed I'll put her in her crib." Platt said as she walked in. "come on get up it's getting cold."

Jay stood up offering Hayley his hand, taking it, a spark of electricity shot through their hands, their eyes met, Platt came back in the room, and cleared her throat. Both looked away and blushed. Platt shook her head and walked away. Hayley stood by the crib and looked at Grace. Jay stood behind her. He couldn't stop himself from putting his hands on her hips, he felt the shudder run up her spine.

"Hayley, what you are doing right now, this is what is right, Grace is going to have an amazing life from now on. She won't remember any of this, she won't remember him or this room. Getting out is what you needed to do for her. You have done the right thing. The hardest part was leaving. Now you have to keep your head up and let us help, let me help you. Your one of us, your blue, we got your back every step of the way. You just have to let us help."

Tears flowed again, turning round in his arms she put her arms round him, she held him and he held her.

"Thank you!" she said as she let go, "we better go eat before Platt has kittens."

They both smiled and walked into the living room.
