Hello, everyone! Here is chapter 2. I hope you like it!
SIENNA'S POV
I stared down at the scared teen and had never felt more confused in my entire life. I turned slowly and started walking away, my mind flooded with rapidly changing images from previous dreams. I knew him, Thomas. He was in my dreams, and in my nightmares, most of the time. I thought for a long time I'd made him up, that he was just a face I'd planted in my mind.
As I trudged along back to my post at the kitchen, I remembered the time I'd dreamt of Minho before he arrived in the box. Just days before Minho arrived, I had dreamt of a scared Asian boy with wild hair grasping onto Newt and I while people in lab coats were trying to tear us apart. Newt and I had known him, and for a few moments after I had woken up, I had physically felt the sadness and fear that I had in my dream. He felt real.
Six days later, the box came up. I had been so excited back then when new people would arrive. Half of us had lost our lives by then to the maze, and new people meant more safety and more family. When I saw that same scared boy with the wild hair being pulled out by Alby and Gally, I approached him and hugged him. From that day, he was glued to Newt and me. We were family. I'd been dreaming of Thomas for over two and a half years now, and he never came up in that box. Until now.
The next few hours were a complete blur. I didn't remember preparing, or cooking, dinner. Just as I finished and set out the plates for the night, Alby approached with Thomas in tow. My breath caught in my throat, and I quickly stepped away, allowing Frypan to step in and take over.
"And lastly, we have our wonderful cooks. We'd be entirely lost and probably dead without them. This is Frypan, and that over there is Sienna," Alby said.
"Not DEAD, but severely malnourished most definitely," Frypan added with a chuckle. "It's nice to meet you Greenie. Alby, I finished up the special treat for the party tonight. Sienna is going to take it over after dinner."
"Perfect, thanks Fry. You too Sienna," Alby called over Frypan's shoulder. I turned a gave him a tight-lipped smile and nod.
My eyes met Thomas's for half a second, and quickly looked back down. I waited until I heard them leave before letting out the breath I hadn't realized I was holding. I closed my eyes for a second and took a few deep breaths. I needed to concentrate; I couldn't let Thomas's appearance throw me off even more than I already was today.
My concentration was broken by the feeling of arms around my waist and my feet coming off the ground. I let out an involuntary yelp and sent my left elbow backward into the person behind me.
"OW, WATCH THE FACE, SI!" the voice shouted. I was placed back to the ground and spun around to come face to face with Minho.
I chuckled and jokingly punched his arm. "You're back early."
"New Greenie! New Greenie means party. I am always down to party. Always. Like, party hard," Minho said before grabbing plate and stuffing a large piece of bread in his mouth.
"Go away and let me work," I told him with a shake of the head.
"See you tonight though, right?"
"Of course. Save me some of Gally's special brew."
I watched Minho make his way over to the table of runners and start shoveling food into his mouth. I loved the boy, he was like a brother to me, but the lack of table manners he had was astounding at times.
Gally arrived last to dinner and a large grin formed on his face as he grabbed his plate. "My special brew is ready. I went all out for the Greenie coming this month, but of course the time I get it absolutely perfect and make my biggest batch yet, the new guy is a dumb Shank."
I cocked an eyebrow and smirked. "You already don't like him? He just got here, Gally."
"He's a dumb shank."
I laughed and walked around the counter, clapping him on the shoulder as I passed. "Give the poor kid a break Gally. It was hard on all of us when we first got here."
I glanced over at Thomas, who was in conversation with Newt, and he was looking right back at me.
GENERAL POV
Once nightfall came, Alby called for the bonfire to begin. Sienna and Frypan handed out slices of chocolate cake with strawberries, their special surprise for their new arrival, while Gally handed out jars of his special brew. Once everyone was content, Sienna looked around for her brother.
Gally noticed Sienna standing on her tiptoes to look around the boys and chuckled. He nudged her arm and pointed forward. Sienna's gaze followed where he pointed and spotted Newt sitting with Thomas. She gave Gally a grateful smile and squeezed his arm as a thank you before setting off in that direction. He watched her go and shook his head disapprovingly. Something about the new Greenie rubbed him the wrong way.
Sienna wrung her hands together nervously as she slowly made her way toward her brother and Thomas. She'd been avoiding him all day, but her brother had seemed to take a liking to him. She couldn't stay away from her brother forever. She could hear her heart beating in her ears as she got closer to the pair, but Minho called to her first.
"SI! SI! SIENNNAAAAA!" he called out.
She laughed and shook her head at her already tipsy friend and waved him off. Minho laughed and raised his mug up toward her, then downed the remaining contents. Sienna looked back toward Newt and Thomas and saw Thomas looking over his shoulder at her. She let out a deep sigh and closed the distance between herself and the two boys.
"Si! I was wondering where you were hiding," Newt said, a large smile plastered on his face. "Thomas, this is my sister, Sienna. She works in the kitchens, and she made this remarkable cake for us all tonight."
"Well, I wouldn't say remarkable, but we did the best we could with what we had. It's rare to get chocolate in the box," Sienna said, locking eyes with Newt to avoid looking to Thomas.
"It's really good. Thank you, Sienna," Thomas said. Hearing her name made Sienna's stomach turn in a way she couldn't really describe.
"T-Thank you," she responded quietly.
Newt looked between his sister and the Greenie and cleared his throat. "I'm going to go get more to drink." He stood and left the two in awkward silence.
Thomas was the first to break the silence. "Do you want to sit down?"
Sienna hesitated, but nodded and sat down next to him. She took a swig from her own jar and grimaced at the taste. No matter how many times she drank Gally's special drink, she always flinched until she was drunk and no longer cared what it tasted like.
"Is it hard?" Thomas asked.
Her brow furrowed and she turned her gaze to him. "Is what hard? Being here?"
"Well, yes. But I meant being the only girl."
Sienna thought for a moment before responding. She'd be lying if she said she hadn't hoped for another girl to arrive in the box each time it came up. It was lonely sometimes. She knew she had her brother, and her best friends Minho and Gally, but she couldn't help but feel like she didn't belong sometimes. Especially after the incident last year.
She forced herself out of her thoughts and nodded. "Yes. Sometimes. But I have Newt. And Minho, and Gally. I consider most of us that are left to be my family. I mean, it's not like we know anything else right?"
"Do you know why that is? Why no one remembers anything?"
"None of us know."
"How did you know that Newt was your brother?"
"We were sent up together," Sienna said, a small smile forming on her lips as she remembered that day. "We were the first, and to this day the only, pair sent up in the box. We wouldn't let go of each other; Alby had to pry us apart." She chuckled, and Thomas did as well. "We just knew. In the box when we woke up, before we go to the Glade, I felt… I felt like gravity was pulling me to him. Like I had to protect him."
"You guys do have the same accent," Thomas pointed out.
"Well, yes. There is that. But even without that we just knew."
Silence filled the air between them again. Sienna looked around at her fellow Gladers dancing around the fire to the beating drums and to Gally beating every person who dared to face him in the circle. The conversation with Thomas wasn't entirely uncomfortable, but she didn't know what to say to him. She was still confused as to why she had been dreaming about him since she got to the Glade and why he was showing up now. Were those dreams real?
"Do you want more cake? Or drink?" Sienna looked up to see Thomas standing and offering her a hand.
"Oh, um… sure," she said, taking his hand and pulling herself up.
SIENNA'S POV
We made our way through the crowd toward the cake, but Thomas was halted when Gally bumped into him. I watched the interaction with the two and knew it wasn't going to end well. Newt approached us and listened in as well. Gally was challenging Thomas in the ring.
"Oh shit," I whispered when I saw Thomas being pushed into the circle with Gally.
"This isn't going to end well," Newt said, taking a sip of his drink. "Gally is going to wipe the floor with him, that poor lad."
"You don't know. Maybe he will surprise us," I said, trying to sound as optimistic as possible.
I watched as Gally immediately pushed Thomas to the ground. The crowd cheered Gally on, and I heard several comments about Thomas being weak coming from the boys around me.
"I could call you shank," I heard Gally taunt. Cheers erupted from around me.
To my left, Newt started laughing, and I elbowed him in the stomach. "Be nice."
While Gally was showing off to the crowd, Thomas managed get him on the ground. Loud gasps and choruses of "oooh's" filled the air. I saw the look on Gally's face change from amused, to enraged. I had only seen that look a few times, and it never ended well. He twisted his body to fling his legs around and trip Thomas.
Thomas tripped and his head smacked the ground. Hard.
"Gally!" I yelled, pushing my through to the front. He locked eyes with me, and I furiously shook my head.
Thomas slowly sat up and started yelling. His yelling was mixed with laughter as he came to the realization of who he was. "I'M THOMAS!" he shouted.
"THOMAAAAAS!" Alby shouted, and everyone in the Glade started cheering loudly.
Gally shook hands with Thomas, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Everyone's joy was cut short by the cries of a Griever from inside the maze. I looked to Newt behind me, and Minho found his way to us quickly. We all gave each other a concerned look, and I looked to Gally who was giving me the same look.
"Alright everyone. It's time to call it and turn in. Welcome to the Glade, Thomas," Alby said, nodding his head in Thomas's direction.
The guys who lit the bonfire approached with buckets of water and poured them on the flames to extinguish them. I listened as everyone said their goodnights, everyone had sobered up quite a bit after the Griever snapped us all back to reality. Frypan clapped his hand on my shoulder and said he would see me in the morning, Gally hugged me and thanked me for the cake, and Minho tugged on my hair and laughed before heading toward their hammocks.
I looked around and spotted Thomas, who was following Chuck toward the sleeping quarters. He stopped and locked eyes with me, giving me a soft smile and nod. I returned the gesture. Beside me, Newt cleared his throat to get my attention.
"I'll walk you to your room," he said.
"Nah, don't worry about it, Newt. Everyone is turning in now, no one went that way. Go get some sleep," I told him, reaching forward, and embracing him in a hug. "I love you, brother."
"I love you too, sister," he said giving me a tight squeeze before pulling back. I could tell there was something bothering him.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing, it's just… Thomas." A look of confusion crossed his features and he chewed on his bottom lip, something he did when he was deep in thought.
"What about him?"
"Was he… was he coming onto you at all?" he asked, genuine concern filling his voice.
I felt a blush creep up my neck and fill my cheeks, but I brushed it off with an accidental snort and giggles. "No, Newt. Not at all. He was just being nice and asking about the Glade."
"Something seemed…" he trailed off. "Nevermind. I might be a bit drunk."
"A bit?" I chuckled and pulled him into another hug. "Go sleep it off."
"G'night, Si."
"Goodnight, Newt."
I watched Newt walk toward the hammocks and stop at the edge, watching for me to make it safely to the room the Builders had built for me last year. I pulled the makeshift door open and peered around the side to wave at Newt before entering. I pulled the elastic from my hair and let the light brown loose curls cascade down my back and slipped off my boots.
Today was a long, long day.
I barricaded my door with a heavy crate, as I did every night, and then changed into a large, loose shirt that I had stolen from Gally months ago. I laid down on my cot, and stared up at the wooden ceiling, thinking about the night's events. Thomas was here, and he didn't seem to know who she was or remember anything about his past.
I played through some of the scenes from my dreams in my head and wondered if they are real, or something I managed to create all in my head. Scenes of a laboratory, fancy equipment and screens, and Thomas and I sneaking around a facility filled my head before I eventually was able to close my eyes.
Sleep came easily at first because I was so exhausted, but the dreams weren't going to make it easy for me to actually get any real rest from it.
