Chapter 3: Fun in the Sun

Alvin and his brothers immediately went with their respective Chipettes to enjoy their first day among people in nearly a week. It wasn't the same as the cruise ship, but they didn't mind. All they were expecting to have was a pleasant time on this island until Dave found them, and now was the perfect opportunity to start.

Alvin and Brittany decided to relax on the section of the island beach near the village, which they had not yet explored. Here, the two friends sat together by a grove of palm trees and warmed up in the sun.

"This is so much better than us being alone on the beach, don't you think, Alvin?" Brittany said with a smile.

"I agree. Simon and Theodore would go nuts with worrying if we didn't have company on this island," replied Alvin.

He held Brittany's hand for a moment and then said, "Britt, I know we haven't been getting along too well. But when we go home, would you like to… uh, what I mean is…"

"Yes, Alvin?"

Alvin was starting to sweat a little from anxiety, but then he screwed his courage to the sticking place and blurted, "Would you like to go out with me when we get home?"

Brittany's smile grew a mile wide. She flung herself into Alvin's arms and squeaked, "Yes! Yes, Alvin! I thought you'd never ask!"

It was more than Alvin could have hoped for. He had been too nervous to ask Brittany because he feared she would turn him down on the spot, but of all the situations in which to ask her, this one may as well have been a blessing in disguise. He hugged Brittany and said, "You won't regret this, Britt. I promise."

"But you could've chosen a better time," Brittany smirked playfully. "Not that I wouldn't mind you asking me on a tropical island like this one."

Alvin playfully stuck his tongue out between his teeth and then resumed sitting peacefully in the shade with Brittany resting her head on his shoulder. After a moment, he said to her, "Want some pineapple juice in a coconut shell?"

"You must've been reading my mind," Brittany giggled.

To Alvin's surprise, a vine extended down to him and Brittany with pineapple juice in a pair of hollowed-out coconuts on a tray. Alvin's eyes perked up and he said, "Well, what do you know? Pineapple juice!"

"But how did-" questioned Brittany. Then she looked up into the palm trees and after a moment, she tapped Alvin on the shoulder and whispered, "Don't look now, but I think we're being watched."

Alvin followed where Brittany was pointing into the tree and he soon had an idea. He took the pineapple juice for himself and Brittany and then tugged on the vine a little hard. Something fell out of the tree with a yelp of surprise and hit the sand with an "Oof!"

It turns out that Simon had been playing to Alvin and Brittany's question and had been offering them a drink while trying to be funny. He got up, brushed the sand off his kilt, and said while rubbing his throbbing rear, "No need to give me an epidermal contusion, Alvin. That tree is pretty high up."

"And what exactly were you doing up there, my smart-aleck sibling?" questioned Alvin with a raised eyebrow.

"Merely a brotherly gesture of affection, as well as trying to be funny," Simon replied. "I thought you and Brittany might like some pineapple juice from me."

Alvin grinned sheepishly and said, "Sorry about that tug, Simon. And thanks for the pineapple juice."

Simon gave his older brother a quick hug in response and then went to join Jeanette for a little time in the sun. The brunette Chipette was on her stomach while waiting for Simon to return when she saw him lying on his stomach beside her. Simon smiled and asked her, "Comfortable, Jeanette?"

Jeanette nodded and said, "I'm comfy. I hope you are too, Simon."

"Want to build a historical sand castle?"

"Oh, yes!"

And so, Simon and Jeanette got on their knees and began gathering up sand and sculpting it, taking care to use a little water to allow the sand to stick. They worked together for fifteen minutes and at the end, they had successfully constructed a life-size sand model of Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark.

"Lovely, isn't it?" said Simon. "Great work on the arches, Jeanette."

"Thanks, Simon," Jeanette smiled. "You're pretty good at this yourself."

The two friends hugged and then basked in the sun around their Danish sand castle before letting the waves wash over their feet.

Meanwhile, Theodore and Eleanor were strolling through the village with a basket of fruit to share. They tasted berries, bananas, papayas and of course, a whole pineapple. After washing their hands in a pond, the two chipmunks continued their walk until they reached a grove of pineapple shrubs that were in bloom. They picked a single pineapple, tore it open, and scooped out the sweet fruit to eat. Then Theodore had an idea, and he said to his blonde friend, "Eleanor, I challenge you to the ultimate fruit-eating contest."

"You're on, Theodore!" the chubby Chipette replied with a giggle.

And with that, the two took a basket each and collected as many berries and bananas and oranges and other fruits as they could, and then they got on their knees and began their silly fruit-eating contest. For nearly twenty minutes, Theodore and Eleanor ate all the fruit they could eat, and since they were both chubby chipmunks, it was hard to tell who was winning. When their contest was over, Theodore and Eleanor were slouching in the shade of a tree with orange and banana peels around them for any hungry birds that came by. They had fruit juice all over their faces and their bellies were as round as bowling balls. Despite how full they were, the two chipmunks were smiling at each other. They simply rested there in the shade and eventually fell asleep, and they only woke when Alvin and the others called them for dinner with the chief and his tribe. Theodore was eager to join his brothers for the meal, and Eleanor went with her sisters at a leisurely pace.

Dinner that evening consisted of roasted pork, fish, prawns, various fruits, and coconut water was the primary drink served. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes sat with the chief Tuiama and his wife as they were his guests in the village, and they enjoyed every moment. Alvin and Brittany toasted their good fortune and drank the water from their coconuts, and surprisingly, they both liked it. Simon and Jeanette shared fruit with each other, and Theodore let Eleanor pick some almonds from his hands. They ate happily and chatted with their hosts, and when dusk came, Chief Tuiama declared, "And now it's time for the dance!"

"Dance?" chorused the Chipmunks and the Chipettes.

It was true, for at the chief's direction, a troupe of village girls dressed in flower-pattern tops and grass skirts with leis and crowns of flowers approached the group and began dancing in the torchlight. Alvin and his brothers watched the dance while holding hands with the girls. They had been hoping to see some hula dancers on their cruise, and perhaps they would get the chance when Dave came to find them. But for now, they simply enjoyed the moment.

As the festivities continued, Brittany had an idea. She said to Jeanette and Eleanor, "Say, why don't we give it a try?"

Her two younger sisters were reluctant at first, but the Chipmunks gave them a little encouragement. With that, Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor started hula dancing slowly at first, then they began getting more into it. The islanders soon took interest in this and watched as the Chipettes tapped their toes and shimmied in a line. Then Simon started playing a ukulele and Theodore played on some drums, and Alvin blew a tune on a little flute as the Chipettes began singing one of their favorite songs for summer.

Chipettes: The tide is high, but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one
Brittany: I'm not the kind of girl who gives up just like that, oh no

Brittany: It's not the things you do that tease and hurt me bad
But it's the way you do the things you do to me
I'm not the kind of girl who gives up just like that, oh no

Chipettes: The tide is high, but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one
Number one (n-number one)
Number one

Jeanette: Every girl wants you to be her man
But I'll wait right here till it's my turn
I'm not the kind of girl who gives up just like that, oh no

Chipettes: The tide is high, but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one
Number one (n-number one)
Number one

Eleanor: Every girl wants you to be her man
But I'll wait right here till it's my turn
I'm not the kind of girl who gives up just like that, oh no

All: The tide is high, but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one
Number one (n-number one)
Number one

The tide is high, but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one

The tide is high, but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one

The tide is high, I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one, n-number one...

The islanders all clapped and cheered, clearly impressed by the song and dance displayed by the Chipmunks and the Chipettes. Alvin and his brothers and their respective Chipettes hugged and took a bow for their hosts, and the celebration continued with feasting and dancing and music until the stars were out. The chief Tuiama had beds in his own hut prepared for the Chipmunks and the Chipettes, and that night, the two trios slept soundly in the hope that Dave would find them soon and bring them home.

A/N: The song for this chapter is "The Tide Is High", originally performed by Duke Reid and the Paragons in 1967, but famously covered by Blondie in 1980.

I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, even though it came so late. The next chapter will be the last one of this story, and it will be the best one!
