Hogan had always thought the swords were just for show. A way for the old Heidelberg aristocracy to—along with their duelling scars—showcase how honourable and manly they were.

He never expected the general to unsheath his because of an off-handed quip. And, considering honour was the whole reason for the weapon in the first place, he never thought that the general would run him through without warning.

He would have thought that after all this time as a spy, he would have learned to expect the unexpected. But, as he dropped to his knees, he was genuinely surprised.
