Chapter 3

Should've Known

Alex walked into the police station and saw Maggie at her desk, walking over she placed a coffee in front of the detective with a smile." Hey."

Smiling at the caffeinated goodness she looked up at the agent. "Hey yourself, to what do I owe this pleasure?"

"No reason, just thought I would stop by and see how you were doing."

"Mmm-hmm you're here to get information about the shooting today." Maggie smirked and took a sip of coffee. "I heard Lena was in surgery, do you know how she is?"

Alex rolled her eyes at Maggie, "You think you know me so well, don't you? And Kara just messaged me telling me that Lena was out of surgery and would make a full recovery."

"Good to know, I'll go over there shortly to get a statement from her and the Turner woman." Maggie said then added, "And I do believe I know you very well, tell me I'm wrong."

"Fine, I was looking for information on the rioters and the shooter. Long shot but Lillian Luthor could be involved."

Maggie quirked her eyebrow at Alex in shock, "Wow that is some family, but it doesn't surprise me. Do you have proof?"

"No, but the guy who shot Lena might. Have you questioned him yet?"

"He lawyered up before he got into the squad car. A high-end lawyer showed up at the station a few minutes after he did."

"Yeah, that's not suspicious or anything. So, who's the lawyer?" Alex asked and then looked up when she heard a door open and men talking. "Are you kidding me?"

"Nope, so your theory about Momma Luthor might be right."

Supergirl flew to the DEO, J'onn was investigating the whereabouts of Lillian Luthor and would let her know when he found her. With nothing more to do until she received information Kara went home showered and changed and went back to the hospital to wait for Lena to wake up and to keep her safe in case someone tried to harm her again.

While she was away Lena woke up for a few minutes but was asleep when she arrived. She was also moved to her own private room and Jodi was sitting next to her talking on her phone.

Kara waved to let her know she was outside and sat down across from a security officer most likely hired by Jodi. It's doubtful Lena will get away without security now. Kara was happy that Lena had Jodi, she was so happy when she transferred to L-Corp. Lena could only say good things about the executive.

Kara smiled because Jodi reminded her a little of Cat Grant but not as prickly, she knew what she wanted and went after it. Having someone like Jodi allowed Lena to do the things she enjoyed most which made them a great team. Thinking about the conversation she had with the CFO at the ceremony, she wondered if she and Lena were more than friends.

Thinking that made Kara look at Jodi with a bit of jealousy which she had no right to feel. Shaking her head, she had to get rid of those feelings, Jodi was good for Lena maybe they would become more than friends. Lena deserved happiness, she deserved to be loved even though she never believed she did.

"Hey, would you like to sit in with her? I need to make a few more calls, it seems Lillian has more friends on the board than I thought."

"Are you sure? I know that Lena and I aren't um, well I can stay out here I…I just uh…"

"She's asleep, she won't wake up for a few hours if not tomorrow morning. Go in and I'll be back shortly."

"Okay, I'd like that, thank you."

Jodi spoke to the security officer then walked down the hall and disappeared around a corner.

Kara sat in the chair next to Lena and held her hand. "I'm sorry this happened, Lena. I should've stopped it before they got a chance to hurt you. I'm so, so sorry for it all. I wanted to be the person who never hurt you, but I did, and I'll never forgive myself for that."

"I didn't want to hurt you, I didn't want to say goodbye or end what we had, what we were becoming but I had to, I thought I was protecting you, but I hurt you and now the shooting. You were to be protected this shouldn't have happened to you."

"K…Ka…Kr"

Kara whipped her head up to look at Lena. "Lena? Lena you're okay, you're safe, wake up, please wake up."

There were more murmurings from Lena, but nothing made sense to Kara. "Lena, what are you trying to say? It's Kara, do you want me to get Jodi?" Kara was standing over Lena now, even with her super hearing she couldn't make out what she was saying.

"Lena, it's okay, you're going to be okay. I don't understand what you're trying to say."

"Kryp…Kara." Lena groaned. "Sto…Moth… L."

"What's going on?" Jodi asked as she walked in the door hearing Kara and Lena. "She's awake? Did you call the doctor?"

"It just happened, I'm not sure what she's saying for sure. Stop Lillian maybe?"

"She might have heard me on the phone earlier, I was talking about not allowing Lillian in tonight, to wait until tomorrow. Nothing was pressing that couldn't wait until then."

"Lena, can you hear me? Open your eyes Lena… come on wake up for us." Jodi soothed stroking Lena's hair.

Kara bristled at the gesture but took a deep breath and continued holding Lena's hand. "Lena, what do you need to tell us?"

The on-duty nurse walked in at that moment and asked when Lena had woken then left to page the doctor.

Lena moved her head back and forth as if she were having a nightmare, whispering no, no over and over.

"Lena, you're safe now, Supergirl got the bad guy, you're in the hospital, you're going to be okay." Jodi continued to try and placate her injured friend.

"Su, Ka…Kryp, L-corp."

It was jumbled but Kara knew exactly what Lena was trying to say and it took all her strength not to fly out of there. "Did you say that Lillian was trying to get into L-Corp tonight?"

"Yeah, and I think she got her way too. There's something there that she wants, isn't it?"

"Oh yeah, I thought Lena… I thought." Kara believed Lena had destroyed it all, but it seems whatever she's been doing in her lab involves kryptonite again and if Lillian gets her hands on it…

"I need to go, if you can keep Lillian Luthor out of L-Corp do it, I'll try and get help and have them go there."

"I'll do what I can, but I've been trying ever since I arrived here to keep her out."

"Do what you can, threaten someone if need be!"

Kara left the hospital room and quickly went to the nearest elevator, there are too many cameras that might catch her changing, once she was outside, she flew towards L-Corp calling J'onn and Alex on the way.

"Hey, Lena's been working with kryptonite and Lillian is on her way to L-Corp to get it. I'm on my way now."

"Kara, wait until we get there, you don't know what kind it is and how it will affect you. Don't go in there like this, wait for backup." Alex commanded but it fell on deaf ears. "Kara? Kara! Dammit Kara."
