Newkirk must have inherited some of his mother's dancing abilities. He was light on his feet, like a cat. It was probably what made him such a good thief and it was convenient that it also helped him be a good spy.
Now, Carter thought as he anxiously watched Newkirk pick his way through the field, he hoped Newkirk would be graceful enough to avoid stepping on any landmines.
"That's it then. Your turn. Easy does it. Just watch where you step."
Carter was the exact opposite of graceful.
