UNITED
Carter was uncharacteristically quiet about his time before Stalag 13. But the boys were able to put together bits and pieces. One thing they knew was that he had spent his last birthday in a Gestapo cell.
They unanimously decided that this birthday would be different. They pulled out all the stops: party hats, cake, presents, pin the tail on the donkey—the works.
They couldn't quite swing a pony ride. But that night, Newkirk and Carter snuck out. And, in a secluded field, Oskar was waiting with a horse.
"Thanks, Newkirk."
"It was a group effort. Happy birthday, mate."
