Evans POV:

Once Eddie and I are back at my new apartment, he asks "So are you going to tell me who this guy that you ditched me for, and then kissed you is?" Eddie asks as I hand him a beer, thankful that Kelly had stocked the fridge for me.

I sigh and gesture for him to follow me to the couch. "It's a long story." I tell him, he raises an eyebrow at me as in saying "tell me anyways." So I do.

"Jay and I grew up around the corner from each other, his older brother Will is Maddie age and they were best friends and Jay and I were best friends.'' I say smiling remembering all the shit we got into as kids.

"Well when we got to high school we started developing feelings for each other, so one day we explored those feelings, we dated unbeknownst to most people beside his brother, and Kelly. We dated up until he left for the army a year after I graduated high school, as he's two years older than I am, which means he left at the age of 19. We kept in touch while he was in the rangers for the first 4 years then, 4 years ago he came home on leave, we had some nights together but he left to go back a week after he got home, and I couldn't take the not knowing when he was or if he was coming back so I cut off communication with him, and now here we are.'' I told Eddie, the cliff notes version of mine and Jay's history, barely touching on it really. Hoping he doesn't hold it against me that I couldn't be there for Jay.

"Come on, it's a big day tomorrow, let's go to bed, we can talk more in the morning." I say not wanting to face Eddie's disappointment in me. I feel like I did the same as Shannon only difference was he was still gone.

"How long was Jay gonne for?" Eddie asks as we take our beer bottles to the kitchen.

"He was gone for 4 and a half years that we were together for, I don't know when he got back so I don't know how long he was over there after I left.'' I l explained.

Eddie nods then says "you know I understand right, I get it, being with someone in the army is hard, Shannon probably would have left sooner than she did if it wasn't for Chris.'' Eddie says and I sigh, scrubbing a hand over my face. "Thanks, I appreciate that, but I know now, especially hearing from you some of what you encountered over there, that what I did was shity, and I should have been there for him. It'll always be one of my biggest regrets.'' I told Eddie.

"You still love him don't you?" Eddie simply asks, I sigh heavily and nod. I do, I love Jay so much and after the kiss tonight it's left me more confused than ever.

"Don't miss out on your opportunity to be with him again." Eddie simply says then heads to the spare room saying. "Good night Buck, see you in the morning."

"Goodnight Eddie and thanks." I say, he simply nods and is gone behind his bedroom door.

I go to my room and strip off down to my boxers, crawl under the covers and I grab my phone to set my alarm, when I see a text that came in twenty minutes ago from Jay.

Jay: That kiss tonight made me so happy, it reminded me of the good times we had.. I was thinking maybe we could go out Friday night?

I smile happily at my phone, I'm off friday as today is wednesday and we are on 24 and off 48..

So i say:

Me: It made mine too, it made me think of our past too. I'd love to go out with you Friday..

I only have to wait a few seconds for a reply:

Jay: Good, well we both better get some sleep.. See you soon Evan.. Xox

Me: Okay, see you soon Jay. Xox

I say and fall asleep thinking of what the future might bring..

--

It's the next morning and I overslept by thirty minutes, so I'm scrambling around the apartment geting ready.

"Damn snooze button shouldn't even exist." I grumble as I throw stuff into my work bag, as Eddie laughs at me and I shoot him a glare.

He holds his hands up in surrender and takes another bite of his toast.

I look at my phone which says its 7:00am

And I'm supposed to be at 51 early today.

"Crap we gotta go." I tell Eddie who nods and we head out, and grab a cab. I really need a new car.

We arrive at 51 with very few minutes to spare. . Kelly and Matt are standing outside of the firehouse smoking a cigar and chuckling at me as I run up to the house.

"Running late on your first day back, baby sev. Tisk tisk." Kelly says to me and I playfully smack him and says. "Shut up, I overslept, if it wasn't for Eddie waking me up I'd still be asleep." I grumble.

They all chuckle at me and I say to Eddie. "Come on, I'll show you where the locker rooms are, and then we will go see Boden." I tell him who nods.

As I pass the ambulance I see Shay and Sylvie for the first time since I've been back.

"Evan!" she exclaims then engulfs me in a hug. "Kelly said I missed you at Molly's last night, the girls were being fussy, so I let the guys go out one time without me and I miss your first night back." She grumbles. I laugh "It's okay Shay I'm back so there will be more nights at Molly's." I simply told her.

Then turn to Eddie who looks like he's mesmerized by Brett which makes me chuckle to myself. I say "Shay, Brett this is Eddie Diaz, Eddie this is Lesile Shay and Sylvie brett." I will introduce the three.

"Nice to meet you ladies." Eddie says, smiling at Brett, who has a shy smile of her own.

"Nice to meet you too." Sylvie says, offering her hand, which Eddie shakes.

"Anyways, I have to get to the Chief's office, you coming Diaz." I say

"Yea, right behind you." He says as I start to walk away to the lockers, he quickly catches up.

"She's single." Is all I say when he catches up to me. He looks confused, and I elaborate by saying "Brett, she's single.'' He starts to stutter and I chuckle at him as I show him where the squad lockers are.

"I, I-" He tries saying I cut him off. "She's a great girl, but has bad luck in love, she's two years younger than you, she's 30." I told him. He sighs and just nods, making me chuckle.

We stuff our stuff in our lockers, then put a tap on our locker with our names on it, then we head to the Chief's office.

"Hi Chief." I say to Boden as I walk into his office after knocking, and he gestures for us to come in.

"Evan! It's so good to have to see you, and this must be Eddie Diaz." Boden says, clapping me on the back and shaking Eddie's hand.

"It's nice meeting you Chief Boden." Eddie says

"You as well, so Grissom says that you've done enough rescues like the ones squad does to place you on Squad 9 while you take your certifications and I agree.'' Boden says, making Eddie nod.

"Okay so Evan, the rest of your squad should be here soon, you will have one of the quarters back here in the bullpen, the one next to Hermans." Boden says and I nod.

"Okay you're both dismissed, it's good having you both on board." Boden says.

"Thanks Chief." We say in unison.

We head out to the apparatus floor where I see four new faces, 3 men and 1 woman.

Kelly gestures to me over.

"Ev, Come meet your new squad members." Kelly tells me.

"Hi nice to meet you guys. I'm Lieutenant Evan Severide, it will get confusing as Kelly here is Captain Severide, as he's my brother." I tell them which they all nod.

"I'm Jesse Miller." The early thirties dark haired green eyed, about 5'7 muscular man tells me, shaking my hand.

"I'm Keith Anderson." The mid-thirties short about 5'5 muscular man tells me.

"I'm Sam Johnson." The 5'7 fit woman with blonde hair and blue eyes tells me.

"And I'm Riley Taylor." The late twenties tall and muscular man tells me.

"Okay nice meeting you all, this is Eddie Diaz he's also on Squad 9." Introducing Eddie.

"Nice meeting you guys." Eddie says.

"Okay we will start running-"I try to say but am cut off by the bells.

Squad 9, squad 3, truck 81, ambulance 61, engine51, multi-vehicle pile up on the main street.

Dispatch says.

Great going to be one of those days I think, like Herman always says, if you get a call before breakfast it's going to be a busy shift.

"Okay load up people.'' I say and we all get in. I tell Jesse "Miller you're the driver." He nods and gets in the driver's seat.

We race down the streets to main street, it's a mess there's a tractor trailer and 4 cars involved in this pile up

Casey takes command of the scene.

"Squad 9, you stabilise the vehicles, Squad 3 you see what's in that trailer, Truck you extract the victims, 61 setup triage."

Casey says, then I look at my crew.

"Miller, Anderson get the cribbing, Taylor, Johnson, Diaz, staple that mini van in the shop window." I yell out.

For a new team that is thrown into action right away together, they work flawlessly together.

--

The scene takes a few hours to clear, by time we leave the scene it's already noon, and we are all sweaty messes, thanks to the late June weather.

When we pull back into the house I see Jay sitting at the squad table waiting for me, I smile and jump down from the truck. Shed my gear and go to him, to which he stands up and says. "Can we talk somewhere private for a second?" He asks and I nod, and lead him to the briefing room.

I shut the door and say "What's up?" He looks nervous.

"I need to tell you something before someone else tells you." he says and I raise an eyebrow.

"Remember how I told you I was with someone but she left for the FBI and I've been single for almost two years now?" he asks and I nod.

"Well, she had my twins, a boy and a girl. She left after they were born saying she couldn't be a mom and all this bull shit, and left me with full custody and rights." Jay tells me as he runs a hand through his hair.

I gasp, I can't believe what he's just said, I know I must have the look of pure shock on my face.

"Please say something." He begs after a few moments of silence from me.

"So you have twin two-year olds?" I say

"Yes, well, they will be two in September, but yes," He says.

Then adds "I still want to see where things go with you, if you are willing but I understand if this is too much for you." he says with a sad face.

"I still want to see where things go with us too, you know I love kids." I told him, with a small smile.

I need to be there for him now, especially where I wasn't there for him when he was in the army. I want to be there for him and his kids.

"Okay, I'm glad you're not giving up on us again." he says with a sad smile.

"Jay, we have a lot to talk about with everything, and figure out where things are gonna go from here, so why don't we wait a few weeks before you introduce me to your kids." I say and he nods. "Yeah that's probably a good idea.'' Just then his radio crackles to life, and he curses.

"I gotta go but I'll see you tomorrow night?" He asks and I nod, and squeeze his hand as he walks past me, he smiles back at me when he reaches the door he says "I'm not letting you go so easily this time, Evan Severide." He tells me and I smile "Good,. "I simply say.."

Just after Jay left I run into Matt, Kelly and Eddie.

"What's up it looked like you were having a serious conversation, what's going on?" Kelly asked joking around knowing he could get to laugh at anything.

"Jay just told me he's a dad." I replied with a silly smile on my face. I had always imagined us being dad's together growing up.

"That's great news. I didn't know how to keep that secret for much longer. It hurt not telling you about them or that Jay was back but you were happy and I didn't want to cause you more heartache."

"It's fine I understand but thank you I needed to find my own way home and I couldn't do that if I knew about Jay then I would have come home for the wrong reasons." I replied walking to the break room to get coffee, making the three other men follow me. We all sat at the round table and Eddie asked."Is the mom in the picture?" I shake my head and say. "Apparently she left after the twins were born, for the FBI." I tell Eddie and he raises an eyebrow at me. "Twins? I can barely handle Chris on my own some days. I couldn't imagine two of the same age at that." Eddie says, making Matt ask. "You have a kid?" "Yea he is 7 and my world." Eddie tells Matt and Kelly.

"So you know who their mom is right?" Kelly asks me and I shake my head 'no'

"Erin Lindsay." Kelly tells me and I gasp.

She was in Jay grade in school but she was in the wrong crowd. We never hung out with her. She's also sergeant Hank Voight, Foster's daughter.

"He was with Erin?" I say almost choking on my coffee.

"Yep was with her for about 6 months before she found out she was pregnant, but then you could tell everything changed. She was more hateful than normal and she broke up with Jay two months before the twins were born." Kelly tells me

"Wow, I can't believe he went through all that, alone." I say wishing I'd never left him, but I know if I hadn't he wouldn't have his twins and knowing Jay he wouldn't trade them for the world.

"You had to do what you had to, to protect your heart." Kelly tells me with a reassuring pat on my shoulder.

"Thanks Kel." I say.

"Are you two going to try to get back together?" Matt asks

"Yeah we have a date tomorrow night, I told him though I think we should see if we can work through our past before he introduces me to his kids." I tell them.

"Probably for the best, I know speaking from being a single dad, it's hard on the kids when a relationship doesn't work out, sometimes it's harder on Chris than it is on me." Eddie says with a chuckle.

"I can see that Andy and Lizzie are so soft hearted. I can see that being the case, we are lucky though that Shay has Emma and I have Matt." Kelly says.

"Yea, we are lucky." Matt says

"We will tell Jay that we will take the twins tomorrow night for the night, so that way you guys can have some time together if need be." Kelly says with a wink and I roll my eyes at him and say, "thank you, I appreciate that." I then ask "have you looked after them for him before?" Kelly nods "I'm sorry, I have I feel bad for the guy." Kelly says. "Don't worry about it, I'm glad he had you to help him." I say with a small smile.

Then I turn to Eddie and say "So Eddie, what do you think so far are you going to stay on with squad 9?" I tried to change the subject for a bit.

"Yea I am, I'm gonna need to find a care for Chris where he has CP. It's more difficult though, and a school and place but I'm going to make the move." Eddie says with a sigh.

"Good I'm glad, and here comes the woman that can help you." I say as Sylvie approaches our table.

"What can I help with?" Sylvie asks with her cherry smile.

"Eddie needs to find a school and Carr for his son Chris that has CP, and a new place for them." I tell Sylvie who squeals slightly.

"I'd love to help, I can get Donna and Cindy to help with the school and care for Chris, maybe Natalie would know someone who is qualified enough to care for a child with CP, and I'm definitely the person to help you find a place." Sylvie says with a smile.

"Okay, thank you Sylvie. I appreciate that." Eddie says with a smile, that she returns.

Eddie and Sylvie talk for a bit and I'm lost in my thoughts, so I go to my quarters and look at a picture that I've kept in my wallet for the last 4 years, a picture of Jay and I kissing and then another of us just happy to be with the other while at Molly's..

I messed up. I know that, but everything happens for a reason I guess, But I need to get Jay back I miss him and I love him so much, I can't lose him again.

Eddies POV.

Sylvie Brett is amazing, for lack of better word.

She already had me interested just at first glance but now, she's helping me get everything situated here in Chicago like she's an angel.

She's showing me houses and apartments even though I rather a house, she's showing me them on her laptop. Go she looks like a goddess.

So when I decide on a few places to look at tomorrow after she sets everything up for me I ask her: "hey Sylvie, will you look at these places with me tomorrow and then maybe we can catch dinner?" I ask

"Sure it's a date." She says and I can see the wheels turning. She thinks I didn't mean it as I date so I quickly say "it's a date." With a smile that she mirrors..

The rest of shift is filled with drills and calls keeping the whole house but especially squad 9 busy.
