Sofia the first season 1 episode 21
The Baker King
It was morning in Enchancia. Sofia and Madeline were woken up by Violet the servant girl.
"Rise and shine, your majesties!" Violet called.
"Good morning, Violet." The girls chorused.
"And what would you like to wear today, m'ladies?" Violet walked over to the girls' wardrobe.
"My purple dress." Sofia declared, stepping off her bed.
"And my red dress." Madeline added.
"As you wish." Violet opened the wardrobe. "But which purple and red dresses?"
"I guess we do have a lot." Sofia admitted, looking at all the purple and red dresses in the wardrobe. "I'll take that one."
"And I'll take this one." Madeline pointed.
"Here you go." Violet got the dresses and handed them to the girls.
"We can put them on." Sofia smiled.
"You know, tomorrow I get to wear a fancy dress too." Violet declared as she picked up the girls' tiaras."
"You mean for the villagers' ball?" Madeline asked.
"Oh, yes!" Violet nodded. "It's so lovely of king Roland to throw a party for everyone in town!"
"Mom and I used to go every year whenwe lived in the village." Sofia recalled, as Violet put her tiara on her head. "This'll be our first time going as princesses."
"It'll probably be just as fun, though." Madeline noted, as Violet moved to her.
"The whole town's so excited." Violet smiled. "Everyone in Dunwitty looks forward to the villager's ball all year."
A bell rang.
"Oh, time for breakfast!" Sofia realized. "Thanks, Violet!"
"Maybe later, we can help you pick out your dress for the ball!" Madeline suggested.
"You're too sweet, m'ladies." Violet bowed. "My job is to serve you."
Down in the dining room, the servants were bringing in the food.
"I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm famished!" Roland declared, about to take a bite out of a muffin.
"Excuse me, your majesty, but we have quite a bit to do today." Baileywick interrupted. "And a few things need your immediate attention."
"Alright, Baileywick." Roland sighed. "Go ahead."
"The new schoolhouse is finished." Baileywick declared. "When should we open it?"
"Tomorrow." Roland replied. "I'll be there myself for the opening."
"Excellent." Baileywick smiled. "The village playground needs new equipment."
"Swings, seesaw, and a dragon-shaped slide." Roland listed.
"There aren't enough vegetables in the community garden to feed all the villagers." Baileywick declared. "What should we do?"
"Um, plant more seeds, then have Cedric sprinkle them with his magical grow-fast powder." Roland declared. "Now if you don't mind, I'm going to eat my breakfast. Most important meal of the day, you know?"
"Actually your majesty, we still have a few things to take care of." Baileywick informed him.
"How many things?" Roland asked.
"Pardon me, queen Miranda." Baileywick unfurled his scroll, which rolled all the way across the table.
"Whoa." Sofia gasped.
"Dad sure has a lot to do today." Madeline added.
"He always has a lot to do." Amber pointed out. "He's the king."
"Looks like I'm in for another busy day." Roland sighed.
"Indeed." Baileywick agreed. "Now, what kind of cake would you like for the villagers' ball?"
"Cake?" Roland asked. "On top of everything else, I have to worry about cake?"
"We can help you with that, dad." Sofia offered. "Since you have so much to do."
"Yeah, we can do it." Madeline added.
"That would be great, girls." Roland smiled. "Thank you."
"Just write down what kind of cake you want on the order form, and I'll bring it to the village baker." Baileywick handed them the paper.
"No problem." Sofia smiled.
"Now, we must be off to the throne room, your majesty." Baileywick declared. "You're already late for your first appointment."
"I'm on my way." Roland stood up.
"And I'm on my way to the attic to get decorations for the ball tomorrow." Miranda added.
"So, what kind of cake should we order?" Madeline asked.
"I vote for strawberry." Amber smiled.
"With lots of chocolate chips!" James added. "And vanilla frosting!"
"I think the cake should be ninety-nine layers tall!" Amber gushed.
"Ninety-nine?" Sofia asked.
"Okay, make it a hundred." Amber smiled.
"One hundred it is." Madeline wrote. "We're going to bring it to dad."
"You know, we should help him as much as we can today." Sofia smiled.
The girls left the dining room.
"I'll help him eat his muffin." James chuckled.
Amber rolled her eyes.
In the corridor, Sofia and Madeline ran to catch up with Roland.
"Dad, wait!" Madeline called.
"Here." Sofia handed him the paper.
"A hundred layers?" Roland asked. "Well, that must have been Amber's idea. Thanks, girls. You've been a big help."
"Dad, wait!" Madeline called again. "We can help you more."
"All day, if you want." Sofia added.
"Hmm, I'd love that." Roland smiled.
"Great." Madeline smiled as she and Sofia took his hands. "What are we doing first?"
A short time later, a group of jesters were performing in front of them.
"These are the funniest jesters in the kingdom." Baileywick declared. "But only one can be the new court jester."
"Which one do you like, girls?" Roland asked.
"This one's really funny!" Sofia giggled, pointing to the middle jester.
"He sure is!" Madeline agreed between laughs.
"Excuse me, your majesty." Baileywick stepped forward. "This urgent note just arrived from king Nasir of Caldoon."
"Oh." Roland read the note.
The middle jester flipped and did a pratfall.
"Dad, you're got to see this!" Sofia giggled.
"J-just a moment." Roland insisted, turning back to Baileywick. "Nasir wants to borrow some of our flying horses. That's fine, but tell him he has to return the royal toolbox sometime this year!"
"Yes, your majesty." Baileywick nodded.
One jester held up a teacup, filled it with tea from the pot on his hat, then gave it to Madeline.
"Thank you." She giggled. "There, he's the one."
"Mr. Teapot." Sofia agreed.
"Right." Roland nodded. "Baileywick, that's the new jester."
"Excellent." Baileywick made a note. "Then it's on to the knighting ceremony. And after that, you'll need to approve the expansion plans for the enchanted animal park, and meet with constable Myers about the elf situation..."
"The... elf situation?" Roland inquired.
That night, Roland, Sofia and Madeline were walking down a staircase, Baileywick just ahead of them.
"Good news, your majesty." Baileywick declared. "We've finished everything on your list."
"Finally." Roland yawned. "I'm exhausted."
"Then I'll make sure dinner is served right away, so you can get to bed early tonight." Baileywick announced. "We have an even bigger day tomorrow."
"Great." Roland chuckled humorlessly.
Miranda was overseeing the placement of a mirror when they walked by.
"Hi, mom." Madeline waved. "What are you doing?"
"Oh, just sprucing up the castle for the villagers' ball." Miranda smiled. "Look, I found this mirror tucked away in the back of the attic."
"Huh." Roland peered at the mirror." I don't think I've ever seen it before."
"It's... very unusual." Sofia declared.
"I know, isn't it great?" Miranda beamed. "Well, I'm going to go check on the ballroom. See you at dinner."
"Bye, mom!" The girls chorused.
"Oh, the mirror's crooked." Madeline noticed.
"Well, a king's work is never done." Roland attempted to straighten the mirror. "Still not... oh, it's straight enough." He suddenly realised something. "Oh, I forgot to give Baileywick the cake order!"
"We can bring it to him." Sofia offered. "You've had a real long day."
"I sure have." Roland agreed. "Imagine what an easy life the village baker must have."
"What do you mean?" Madeline asked.
"Well, all he has to do is bake bread and cake, whereas I have a whole kingdom to run." Roland explained, looking into the mirror. "On days like this, I wish I were the village baker. It'd be such a simple life, just the six of us. Well, we'd better get to dinner, while I still have time to eat it."
"Okay." Sofia nodded.
As they walked away, the mirror glowed a blue light.
"What's that?" Madeline looked back.
"What's what?" Sofia asked.
The mirror was normal.
"Oh, nothing." Madeline sighed. "I must be seeing things."
The next morning, Sofia and Madeline were awoken by the crow of a rooster. As they jolted awake, they saw the rooster on the open window frame. They looked around. Their room had changed. James was sleeping in a bed across from them.
"Where are we?" Sofia asked.
"Just one more tiara, daddy?" Amber mumbled in her sleep.
"Amber, wake up!" Madeline shook her.
"What are you doing in my room?" Amber yawned.
"This isn't your room." Sofia told her.
"Where are we?" Amber asked. "And why is there only one dress in that closet? And... where's my tiara?"
Amber's scream woke up Roland.
"Amber?" He fell out of the bed.
Roland and Miranda entered the kid's room.
"Is everyone okay?" Roland asked.
"Where are we?" James asked.
"And who's nightgown am I wearing?" Amber added.
"I don't know." Roland replied.
"Look, there's the castle!" Miranda pointed out the window. "We must be in the village."
"That cant be!" Roland looked. "We all went to sleep in the castle last night."
There was a knock downstairs.
"Baileywick, there's someone at the door!" Roland called.
"Uh, I don't think Baileywick's here." Madeline pointed out.
"Okay, uh, everyone get dressed." Roland instructed.
Amber inspected her dress.
"This is the ugliest dress I've ever seen." She groaned.
"That's not a dress, Amber." Sofia told her. "That's an apron."
Amber screamed again, the knocking joining her.
"Coming!" Roland came down the stairs. Sofia and Madeline followed.
"This looks like a bakery." Madeline noted.
Roland opened the door.
"Uh, hello?" He said.
"Mornin' everyone." A chubby man walked in. "Two loaves of bread please, Roland."
"Excuse me?" Roland asked.
"Two loaves of bread." The man repeated.
"Why are you asking me?" Roland asked.
"Because you're the baker." The man answered.
"No, I'm the king." Roland retorted.
"You, the king?" The man laughed. "That's a good joke." Everyone knows you're Roland the baker."
"Baker?!" Roland gasped.
"Let me guess." The man pointed to Amber as she came down the stairs. "Next you're gonna tell me you are the queen?"
"No, I'm the princesses." Amber huffed
"What a sense of humor you all have!" The man laughed. "So Roland, can i have my bread now?"
Madeline and Sofia each got a loaf of bread and handed it to the man.
"Here you go." Sofia smiled.
"Thanks." The man, still chuckling, paid Sofia.
"Bye." Madeline waved as he left.
"What is going on?" Miranda asked.
"Why would that man think you're a baker, daddy?" Amber asked
"I have no idea." Roland shrugged.
"I think I do." Madeline spoke up. "Yesterday at the castle, dad wished he was a baker."
"I did?" Roland frowned. "You're right, I did."
"Well, it looks like your wish came true." Miranda noted. "But how?"
"I don't know." Roland shrugged. "Maybe some kind of a magic spell was cast on us."
"Maybe Cedric messed up one of his spells again." James suggested.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" Amber asked. "Let's get back to the castle and undo the spell before someone ask us to... bake something!"
"Wait." Roland declared. "This spell might not be such a bad thing. I mean, you can look at it as a vacation."
"A vacation?" Sofia asked.
"A vacation?" Amber gasped.
"Yeah." Roland nodded. "Life in the castle is so busy and demanding. This is my chance to take a break from being king. If we stay here, all we have to do is bake some bread. Then we can relax and spend some time together."
"Oh, Rollie." Miranda chuckled. "I know it sounds good, but I used to live in the village, and I'm not sure being a baker is as easy as you think."
"Couldn't possibly be harder then being king." Roland surmised. "So, what do you say, everyone?"
"Well, if it's what you really want." Miranda agreed.
"I'll do it." Sofia nodded.
"Me, too!" James added.
"And me." Madeline smiled. "It could be fun."
"Or it could be horrible!" Amber griped. "I want to go back to the castle. Now, daddy."
"Come on, Amber." Sofia pleaded. "Dad needs a break."
"Can you just do this for him?" Madeline begged.
"Pretty please?" Roland put his hand on Amber's shoulder.
"Fine, I'll stay." Amber gave in. "But i won't like it."
"Thanks, everyone." Roland smiled. "Now let's do a little baking, and then a lot of relaxing, huh?"
"But dad, we don't know how to bake." James pointed out.
"That's okay." Sofia declared, indicating herself, Madeline and Miranda. "We can teach you."
"Not unless we get some more flour." Miranda noted.
"And milk and eggs." Madeline added.
A short while later, James was trying to catch a chicken.
"Here, chicky, chicky!" He called. "I need your eggs, please!"
The chicken escaped James' grasp.
"Why does she keep running away?" James groaned.
"Probably because you're chasing her." Sofia pointed out. "You should check the chicken coop."
"Ohhh." James smiled. "Good idea."
Amber staggered over, carrying a bag of flour almost as big as she was.
"I've got the flour!" She yelped.
The chicken started pecking at Amber's feet. Screaming, she ran around the back yard. She climbed onto a pile of hay bales, but fell trying to get off, bring up a cloud of flour.
Madeline found Roland staring at a cow.
"What are you doing, dad?" She asked.
"I'm getting milk." Roland declared. "Cow, I command you to give me milk this instant!"
The cow mooed.
"I don't think that's how it works." Madeline said awkwardly.
"It isn't?" Roland asked.
"I'll show you, dear." Miranda walked over. She put a bucket under the cow, and started getting milk.
"Hmm, fascinating." Roland observed.
"Oops!" James yelled from outside.
"Aah!" Amber ran in screeching. "The chicken's coming! Run!"
"Oh, boy." Roland rolled his eyes. "Perhaps we should get inside and start baking."
Inside, all the equipment was laid out.
"To make bread, first you gently sift the flour." Sofia demonstrated.
"Got it." Roland took the sifter. "Sift the flour!"
Roland turned the crank too hard, creating a cloud of flour.
"Oh, my." Roland declared. "I can't see anything!"
The family coughed as the cloud dissapated.
"Uh, I think some of that flour made it into the bowl." Madeline noted.
"And the rest of it is all over us." Amber grimaced.
"I know!" James beamed. "Isn't it great?"
"Perhaps baking is a little harder then you thought?" Miranda asked Roland.
"It's only our first time." Roland smiled. "I'm sure we'll get better a it."
"Well I'm ready to go back to the castle whenever you are, daddy." Amber said as she emptied flour out of her cap.
"Not so fast." Roland declared. "You haven't given this simple life a chance."
Roland got out the baking supplies and got to work.
Roland: Life as a king is filled with stresses
I spend my days fixing royal messes
So let me kiss that world goodbye
And give the simple life a try
Don't need my hands in every matter
I just want to mix this batter
Sofia/Madeline: But we don't know a thing about dough
Amber: Is icky sticky goop the way to go?
Roland: I know my life will be easy here
Free from the stress and strife
I'm sure our days will be breezy here
Living the simple life
Let's get off the royal fast track
A baker's life is much more laid-back
Miranda: But here in town we've still got stress
Amber: And not a tiara or fancy dress
Roland: I know my life will be easy here
Just me with the kids and wife
I'm sure our days will be breezy here
Living the simple life
The batter expanded, surprising Roland.
Give it a try, and you'll see it's fun
Baking a croissant or a cinammon bun
The dough Roland put in the bowl starting rising.
Sofia: But look out
Madeline: It's rising up and up
Miranda: Just pat it down with a measuring cup
Roland: I just need time to practice cooking
And make the pastries better looking
James: I hope you're right, I really do
Amber: Cause what I'm eating tastes like... ew! Glue!
Chorus: You see life isn't so easy here
Still we've got stress and strife
Roland: But I'm sure our days could be breezy here
Living the simple life
Chorus: But it doesn't seem easy
Or simple or breezy
Here in this not-so-simple life
The oven suddenly blew up, covering Roland's face with dough.
"Oh, no." He groaned. "I'm sure we'll get the hang of it."
"We are never going to get the hang of it!" Amber groaned.
"I know." Sofia sighed.
"And dad doesn't look any less busy then when he was a king." Madeline added.
Roland broke a spoon in his dough.
"That's the third one today!" He sighed.
"Mom, we don't think this is working out the way dad wanted." Sofia told Miranda.
"True." Miranda nodded. "He may not want to admit, but he's a better king then a baker."
A mother and her two children came into the bakery.
"Mom, can we go to the playground?" The boy asked. "Please?"
"We'll see." The mother declared. "I need to buy some bread. One loaf, please."
"We'll help her." Madeline declared.
Sofia handed the bread to Madeline, who gave it to thewoman
"Here you go, ma'am." She smiled. "Sorry it's a little lumpy."
The woman paid Madeline.
"Now can we go play?" The boy asked.
"Come on mom, hurry!" The girl pulled her mother's hand.
"Okay, okay, you two." The mother chuckled. "Thank you!" She told the family.
As they left, Sofia and Madeline counted the money.
"Wait you gave us too much!" Sofia called.
"We'll be right back." Madeline told the others as they left the shop.
The girls followed the mother and her kids to the park.
"Excuse me, ma'am." Sofia held out her hand. "You forgot your change."
"Oh, thank you." The mother smiled. "I was in such a rush. My kids love the new slide. It was so kind of the king to build it. I wish he could see how happy he made all of the children."
"Us, too." Sofia agreed.
"Then he can see why he needs to be king." Madeline realised.
"Maddie, that's it!" Sofia smiled. "Come on!"
They raced back to the bakery.
"Mom, Amber!" Madeline called. "We know what to do about dad!"
"What?" Amber asked.
"We're going to show him all the great things he's done for the villagers." Sofia explained. "Then he's want to be king again."
"I hope you're right." Amber sighed.
Sofia and Madeline found Roland in the back room.
"Dad, would you help us make the bread deliveries, please?" Madeline asked.
"Sure, girls." Roland nodded.
"Great." Sofia smiled.
Roland got two burnt loaves off the shelf. A head shake from Sofia and Madeline, and he changed him for better loaves, putting them in the basket. Once they left the bakery, Sofia and Madeline took Roland to the park.
"There you go." Roland gave a woman some bread. "Enjoy the bread."
"Can't catch me!" One boy said to another as they ran by.
"Hey dad, is that the new playground equipment you ordered?" Madeline pointed.
"You're right, Madeline." Roland smiled. "The children sure like that slide."
"They love it." Sofia agreed. "Come on. We have more bread to deliver."
As they walked past a garden, they overheard some conversation.
"I don't understand." A man said. "The garden was empty yesterday, and look at all this!"
"King Roland and his sorcerer make everything grow faster, honey." His wife explained.
"Thank goodness for that." The man smiled. "We'll have to thank the king at the villagers' ball tonight."
"Oh, the ball!" His wife beamed. "I can't wait to dance in the great ballroom."
"The villagers' ball!" Roland gasped. "I forget all about it! I wonder if everything's ready at the castle?"
"We don't have to worry about that anymore, dad." Madeline told him. "We're bakers now."
"Bakers, right." Roland sighed.
As they kept walking, Roland noticed something.
"Look girls, it's the new schoolhouse!" He pointed. "Miss Sarkin!"
"Oh hello, Roland." Miss Sarkin smiled. "I'm afraid we won't need any bread today after all."
"What?" Roland asked. "Why not?"
"The king never showed up to open the school, so we had to send all the children home." Miss Sarkin explained.
"Oh, that's right!" Roland groaned. "I was supposed to open the school. I mean, the king was supposed to-"
"I heard no-one has seen the king all day." Miss Sarkin confided. "And if he doesn't show up soon, they're going to cancel the villagers' ball tonight. Oh, I hope nothing bad happened to him. He is the best king Enchancia ever had!"
"I never thought about what would happen if I wasn't king anymore." Roland sighed.
"I know it's a hard job, dad, but you're really good at it." Sofia declared.
"And the people need you." Madeline added.
"You're right, girls." Roland acknowledged. "I think it's time I become king again."
They returned to the bakery.
"I have an announcement." Roland declared. "I want to be king again!"
"Finally!" Amber cheered. "Yes!"
"Aww, already?" James groaned.
"I'm glad to hear it." Miranda smiled. "But how can we undo this spell?"
"Good question, Miranda." Roland replied. "I... don't know. I don't even know what caused it."
"Uhhh... oh!" Miranda gasped. "Think back to when you made the wish. Where were you? What were you doing?"
"Well, I was with Sofia and Madeline, in the castle." Roland recalled. "I remember talking about how much easier life would be as a baker... but we were alone."
"No, we weren't." Madeline realised. "The mirror was there too!"
"Ah, of course!" Roland gasped.
"What mirror?" James asked.
"The mirror mom found in the attic!" Sofia declared.
"Dad made a wish in front of it, and right after, I saw it sparkle and shimmer!" Madeline revealed. "Maybe it's a magic mirror that grants wishes!"
"Well, that would certainly explain everything!" Roland smiled.
"So, to undo the spell, maybe all you need to is go back to the mirror..." Miranda started.
"And wish to be king again!" Roland finished. "It might just be that simple."
"But daddy, how are we going to get in the castle?" Amber asked.
Just then, the door opened, and Baileywick entered the bakery.
"Good day, Roland." He greeted him.
"Baileywick!" Roland embraced him. "I've missed you, old friend!"
"Is this how you greet all your customers?" Baileywick groaned.
"Oh, uh, right." Roland let go. "Only our favorite customers. So, how can we help you?"
"I'm here to pick up the cake for the villagers' ball." Baileywick declared.
"Um, what cake?" Roland gulped.
"I ordered it yesterday." Baileywick told him. "Strawberry, vanilla icing, one hundred layers tall. Sound familiar?"
Roland smiled nervously, while James glared at Amber.
"Of course, the cake." Roland frowned. "I'm afraid-"
"It's not finished yet." Sofia stepped in. "But as soon as it is, we'll bring it to the castle, in person."
Oh, nothing's going right today." Baileywick sighed.
"Oh, don't worry." Miranda consoled him. "It'll be there, in plenty of time for the ball."
"If there is a ball." Baileywick replied. "No one seems to know where the king is, and it's getting late."
"Alright, we'd better start- I mean, finish that cake." Madeline declared. "See you at the castle."
"I hope so." Baileywick nodded. "And no goodbye hug, if you don't mind."
"Of course not." Roland chuckled nervously. "Bye, now."
Baileywick left the bakery.
"Good thinking, girls." Roland smiled. "When we bring the cake to the castle, we can find the magic mirror and undo the spell!"
"You're forgetting one thing." Miranda declared.
"What?" Roland asked.
"First, we have to bake the cake." Miranda pointed out.
"And not just any cake." James added. "It has to be a hundred layers tall. Thanks, Amber."
"Sorry." Amber winced
"It'll be impossible to bake a cake like that!" James groaned.
"Well, if I've learned one thing today, it's that something's in life are very difficult, but worth all the hard work." Roland declared. "So let's start baking."
James and Madeline mixed the cake batter, with Sofia putting strawberries in it. Roland and Miranda put the individual layers in the oven. Amber was in charge of frosting.
"Why did I ask for a hundred layers?" She groaned, standing at the top of a ladder.
Finally, the job was done.
"Well, we did it." Roland smiled.
"We sure did." Sofia agreed.
"Let's get it to the castle before it tips over. "Madeline said hastily.
"I'll got the cart." Roland said.
Miranda opened the back door, and the cake was wheeled out. It was too tall, though, and the top was knocked off.
"James, catch it!" Roland yelled.
James dove and caught the piece of cake. He then ran after the others
"Wait up!" He called.
Once they got to the castle, they used some rope to lift James up so he could put the top back on the cake.
"Careful." Roland said. "Steady as she goes..."
Just as James put the top back, Baileywick entered.
"Ah, finally. "Baileywick noted. "The cake has arrived."
"On time as promised." Miranda smiled.
"I hope it taste better then it looks." Baileywick grimaced.
"I hope so too." Roland said under his breath.
James tasted the frosting on his finger.
"Nope." He declared.
"Please take this to the ballroom." Baileywick told the servants. "Now, I'd better go find the royal family, or else there will be no ball."
"We'd better get to the magic mirror." Sofia stated.
"Yes." Roland agreed. "This way!"
The family followed Roland to the mirror's location.
"Here we are." Madeline noted.
"I really hope this works." Amber declared.
"I do too, Amber." Roland cleared his throat. "Hello again, magic mirror. Remember me? I, uh, used to be the king, before you turned me into a baker. The people in the village need me, and I need them. So if you'd be so kind, I very much wish to be king again. Right now, if possible."
The mirror started to glow once more.
"Look, it's sparkling!" Sofia smiled.
The royal family were covered in sparkles, which changed her villager clothes back to their royal clothes.
"It worked!" Miranda gasped.
"The spell is broken!" Madeline cheered.
"I'm back!" Amber took her newly-returned tiara off her head. "Oh, my sweet, precious tiara. I missed you so!"
"It feels good to be king... again" Roland smiled.
Baileywick walked by, and saw the royal family.
"King Roland, there you are!" He smiled. "Thank goodness! The villagers' ball can begin!"
"Splendid, Baileywick!" Roland beamed.
"But there are a million things you need to do first." Baileywick added.
"Great!" Roland declared. "Let's get to work! Oh, and could you please have that mirror put back in the attic?"
"Way, way back in the attic." Miranda added.
"It's the only mirror I never want to see again." Amber stated.
"Of course, your majesties." Baileywick looked at the mirror.
Some time later, the royal family entered the ballroom, accompanied by a fanfare.
"Oh king Roland, it's such an honor!" Miss Sarkin gushed.
"The honor is mine." Roland smiled.
"Thank you for planting more food in the garden, your majesty." The wife from earlier curtsied.
"Of course." Roland nodded.
"And for the playground." The mother added.
"My pleasure." Roland declared. "You are all very welcome."
"It is time for the cake." Baileywick pulled a tassel, revealing the cake from behind a curtain.
The crowd gasped. The royal family took their places at the table while servants handed out plates with cake slices on them.
"So, are you happy to be king again?" Sofia asked Roland.
"Are you?" Madeline added.
"I'm happy to have daughters like you." Roland smiled. "You're always looking out for me, whether I'm a king, or a baker."
"To king Roland, who does so much for so many." The chubby man raised his plate.
"To king Roland!" The crowd cheered.
"To dad!" The family added.
Everyone started eating.
"Ugh, there's something wrong with this cake." The mother grimaced.
The royal family shared nervous looks.
"I'll be sure to have a word with the baker." Roland declared. "The cake will be much better next year, I promise."
Roland pushed aside his food as the villagers began dancing.
