Goh and Ash slump onto the couch, dejected.
Chloe opens the door to the lab, and notices the melancholy boys. Puzzled, she inquires about their situation. "What happened to you two? Did you get involved in some big competition or battle, or something like that?"
"No, it was… it was the café", Goh mumbled. "It's not getting nearly enough costumers. We've tried everything."
"Is it really important for it to get more costumers? When I went there, it seemed to be doing well…"
"Leah is in a lot of debt because of all the months she spent not getting any costumers, so we need to do better", Ash explained. "But… Pikachu is too tired to give people flyers anymore."
"Pika…"
"…Why is he in a tutu?" Chloe questioned while pointing at pikachu.
"We thought the tutu would help get people interested." Goh told her.
"Well, getting new costumers isn't the only important thing, you need to keep the ones you attract, too!" Chloe observed.
"You have a point, the café is kind of… drab. We haven't noticed many return costumers lately."
"Is there anything I can do to help? Seeing you guys get so invested in this café business is making me want to get involved, too!" Chloe exclaimed, with a rare smile.
"Wellllll…" Goh trailed off, suddenly not looking so dejected anymore. "I did have a bit of an… idea."
Chloe felt a strange chill run through her body. "W-What do you mean, Goh? And… why are you looking at me like that?"
Eventually
"Why…" Chloe muttered, but was unable to will herself to finish the question. She already knew why! It was because Goh and Ash are just two big idiots, that's why!
"Don't be so grumpy, Café-chan! We need you chipper to entertain the guests!" Ash replied, apparently oblivious to Chloe's plight.
Chloe wished she had a mirror to see how ridiculous she looked right now. When Goh showed her the dorky mascot costume, she couldn't believe it. She kicked and she screamed all the way to the café, until finally she was forced to cave in.
Dressing up as an anthropomorphic coffee cup named 'Café-chan' was not how she imagined she'd spend her weekend. At least it does have Eevee ears. Eevees always make everything better.
Chloe musters up what little courage she has and waves her flags (the flags of cafétopia, Goh tells her) at some entering costumers. "Look at me… it's everyone's favorite, Café-chan! Oh, wow."
"Hm. You don't sound excited enough." Goh complained.
"Do I look excited?" Chloe grumbled. It was taking all her willpower not to just rip this costume apart and regain her identity. Too bad she's just too nice to these two dorks and can't help but wanting to help.
I mean, it's not all bad. Sometimes Dawn pops in to ask for drinks, and she gets to look at her beautiful face again. Though for some reason, Chloe doubts Dawn knows it's her under the suit. She keeps asking Ash 'how come Chloe never visits this place', which is… rather depressing.
"Hi, I'm… Café-chan…" Chloe tries to say, but she sounds like she's about to faint.
Wait a minute. She is about to faint! This costume is too stuffy! She's going to die from the heat if she keeps this up!
Chloe walks into what she thinks is a blind spot and tries to remove the upper half of the suit for a while, just to get her bearings again.
Unfortunately, she trips on Grookey (that monkey is the bane of her existence! It's a bad influence on Eevee _) and ends up falling right in front of a family of costumers, including two kids who are now staring at her in shock and sorrow.
"C-Café-chan… Café-chan isn't real?!" One of them tearfully asks their parents. They are giving Chloe the biggest death glare right now.
She's also feeling another, far more menacing death glare behind her. Looking back, she sees Ash. He is very, very angry at her.
"Ash… I didn't mean to-" She stammers, trying to think of a better excuse.
"Chloe, did you just traumatize these little kids? DID YOU?!" Ash shouted.
"Oh, no, please!" Chloe discards the café-chan suit entirely and starts fleeing for her life, with Ash in hot pursuit.
"You don't get to make children be disillusioned with the world while I'M around!" Ash yelled angrily. "I'm the only one who gets to be horribly traumatized around here!"
"I JUST WANTED SOME AIR!" Chloe insists while desperately trying to find a hiding place.
Meanwhile, Goh stared at the morbid scene, wondering if he should intervene at some point. "…Nah", he concludes before looking down at his Rotom-phone again. "Oooh, what's this? Mew sightings in Lental? That's very interesting…"
Suffice it to say, Chloe never dared even utter the name 'Café-chan' ever again.
