Chapter Sixteen:

"I thought she didn't have any powers!" Bunny yelled.

"I thought she didn't either…" Hiccup whispered to himself. He pulled hard on Toothless's saddle, avoiding the fire that had started to spread. Across the field, Jack used the winds to sweep Rapunzel into his arms, throwing down a layer of ice that evaporated on the flames.

North pulled the sleigh close enough for Bunny to hop aboard, and the Pooka grabbed Toothiana by the ankle to drag her in as well. The Yeti's were yelling loudly, but had managed to avoid the fire.

Merida - well, she was in the middle of the flames, slightly hunched over with the effort it took to both unlock her abilities and use them so much. Hiccup remembered how much his body had hurt when he'd started controlling the wind, but he'd never been able to accomplish this much.

"JACK!" Hiccup yelled, pulling Toothless to a stop next to the winter and spring spirits. "I need you to put this out!"

"Yes, I would very much like to do that!" Jack griped. "EXCEPT IT'S TOO HOT!"

"I thought you could use the water in the air," Rapunzel asked.

"There is no water in this air," Jack griped. "C'mon Punzie, it's time for you to go sit with North,"

Hiccup and Toothless zipped back towards Merida, probably looking for an opening to get to her. Rapunzel twisted angrily in Jack's grip and scowled, crossing her arms.

"Like hell I'm sitting this out!" She hissed, and threw herself sideways, causing Jack to drop her. Before he could react, a large flower burst out of the ground and caught the spring spirit, depositing her on the ground. Rapunzel looked up and smiled at Jack, then started to pull the rubble from the castle over the fires, smothering them. Jack flew above her, using layers of ice to put out the other fires.

The guardians tried to avoid the fires, letting Rapunzel and Jack do most of the work as they faced off against the remaining Nightmares. Still, nobody could get close to Merida, who was still screaming and setting things on fire. It looked like even her hair had started to set.

"Merida!" Hiccup yelled, pulling Toothless to a stop above her. The darkling glared in his direction, grabbing and aiming her bow. "Meri!"

The Bear Queen fired in quick succession, and two flaming arrows headed towards the dragon rider. Toothless spun into a roll to avoid the shots, but Hiccup lost his grip and was sent flying towards earth. The autumnal spirit leveled out his body and summoned a cushion of air to soften the fall, landing only a few feet from Merida, but trapped into a burning ring of fire. Toothless roared, but the dragon wasn't able to get back to his rider.

Hiccup took a deep breath. In the background, the guardians were all fighting together against the rogue nightmares, but they struggled against the fires. Jack and Rapunzel were trying themselves, but the fires appeared faster than they could put them out.

"Merida!" Hiccup yelled. The Bear Queen didn't spare him a glance. "Meri! You've got to stop this!"

Hiccup took a deep breath and summoned the winds, pushing against the fires. The flames parted a little, and he took a few steps forwards. The flames licked at his legs and arms, but he kept going.

The wind gave out, causing the fire to lash back at Hiccup. He yelled as it started to catch and burn him, but he limped forwards, reaching out for Merida.

The Bear Queen turned, her eyes aflame and angry, just as Hiccup reached her. He grabbed her by the shoulders. The two spirits locked eyes, and Hiccup pulled her in. Merida's eyes widened.

Their lips met, the fires flared brighter, and everyone else yelled out at once.

Authors Note: And the merricup hits! I hope you're all excited for the ending...

also sorry this chapter seems so short. But I promise the pacing is worth it!
