Chapter Two: Escape
I yelped as we emerged from the tunnels and skidded to a halt when I saw we were on a ledge of a very steep cliff. I scooted over as I pressed myself against the wall while telling myself not to look down, so Nan could have room. Nan stepped out from the tunnels and looked down. "Of course the escape tunnel leads to a cliff." Nan grumbled and looked down. There was a high pitch screech and Nan looked over at me. She looked over at me and placed her hand on my back. "Forgive me." She pleaded and shoved me off the cliff before I had a chance to ask why.
I'm gonna die.
There was no doubt about it as I continued to fall, I noticed below me was nothing but white and I could only pray it was snow and not fog as I tried my best to readjust myself to landing on my feet while bending my knees. I gasped in shock as I fell into some thick fresh snow and relief washed over me.
I'm not gonna die.
Nan either took a risk or her vampire eyesight is that good she knew I would land in fresh snow. I'll go with the latter if I want to be able to look at her again when she catches up with me. "Inveni Vos!" a male voice growled behind me as I wiggled myself out of the snow. I looked over my shoulder in horror to see a tall man dressed in red robes under some armor with a silver mask charging towards me with his sword drawn.
I quickly reached for my dagger though I quickly realized how useless it would be to deflect his attack. I quickly dodged him as he thrust his sword at me and he glared over at me. "Nothus." He hissed as he tossed his sword to the side and lunged at me. I screamed as his whole weight knocked me off my feet and he pinned me down as he reached for my dagger. "N-no!" I hissed as I frantically tried to keep the only form of defense I had away from him. He grabbed my wrist and squeezed it, causing me to cry out in pain and releasing my dagger. He grabbed my throat with both hands and started to squeeze hard. I clawed at his hands desperately trying to get him to release his hold on my throat.
I couldn't breathe and I was starting to panic, which I knew wasn't good from the few lessons Cassie gave me. I could claw at this man's hands all I want, but that clearly won't deter him from the fact he had every intention to kill a thirteen-year-old girl. I frantically started to search for something or anything in the snow to help me out. I felt a cool metal object and grabbed it. I recognized it was my dagger's hilt and used all my strength to stab down into his neck. His hands flew off my neck and I watched in horror as blood spluttered out from his neck and the mouth in his mask. He fell lifelessly on top of me and I felt sick to my stomach as I just laid there in the freezing snow with a dead man on me. My mind was spinning as reality sank in I just killed someone while at the same time that realization made me sick to my stomach.
Every rational part of me was gone as I laid there motionlessly and this feeling of numbness slowly crept in. I wasn't sure how long I laid there in the snow, but I knew it was a long time since the dead man on top of me was growing colder and I was no doubt developing frostbite judging by the pins and needles sensations I was feeling in my cheeks and fingers. I was probably also going insane cause I could have sworn I heard my name being called.
"Serena!"
"Serena, where are you?!"
I heard footsteps coming up towards me and I continued to lay completely still, hoping if it was more of those cultists who attacked my home they wouldn't notice me under their fallen comrade.
"By the Nine! Seri!" Cassie cried out as I heard footsteps run towards me and pulled the dead man off me. She knelt next to me and cupped my face. "Are you all right?! Actually don't answer that! What I'm thinking you're not fine…Serene, I found her! Help me out here she's in shock!" Cassie called out.
Aunt Serene is here? How did she get here so quickly? She lives all the way in Rivenspire. How long was I here?
A familiar Breton vampire wearing a hooded cloak ran towards us as she removed the hood it was indeed none other than my aunt. Aunt Serene is technically my great great great great great aunt from my mother's side, but it was easier to just say she's my aunt. She kept her visits brief here, only because she couldn't stand my uncle and my father-mostly my father-for some reason, so the only reason she visits is to see me.
Right now, I honestly didn't care that she was here. I was just relieved it was people I knew and trusted here. "Seri, sweetheart, I'm gonna need to pick you up so we can get you off this godsforsaken mountain. I'll try to be careful, but I need you to let me know if you're in any pain." She told me. I nodded woodenly and she bent down and scooped me up in her arms. My eyes landed on the man I killed and I felt my stomach churn. "Aunt Serene, put me down, please…I'm gonna-" I didn't get a chance to warn her as I became violently sick though I did manage to aim over her shoulder.
"Sorry." I croaked. "Don't apologize, it's alright." My aunt assured me. "W-Where's Uncle Cedric and Nan?" I asked as I looked around for them. "Nan is safe and waiting for you in the carriage. She was worried sick about the fact she had to push you off the cliff for your safety," Cassie answered. The fact they didn't answer my question about where is Uncle Cedric didn't go over my head and that made me feel uneasy. "He knows where to find us." My aunt assured me, no doubt sensing my reaction.
I only nodded woodenly and rested my head on her shoulder not wanting to look back to see the man I killed or Castle Hrive.
Author's Note: *TRANSLATING TIIIIIIIME!*
Words being translated as followed:
-Inveni Vos: I found you in Latin( I figured what better language to use to have them speak Daedric than non-other than Latin!)
-Nothus: Bastard in Latin (Apparently there were a lot of words for bastard in Latin I had to look for the word that means what I wanted to sooo the definition of this word literally means illegitimate which works and you guys will understand fully why here soon…I found it pretty funny cause I realized what I did on accident.)
