Chapter Three: A New Start

Fennorian, an Altmer vampire scholar who was my aunt's beau, gently tilted my head to the side as everyone silently waited for him to finish assessing the damage done from my encounter with the cultist and being in the snow for a long period of time. We never traveled to Castle Ravenwatch, which I thought was odd, but we traveled to Cyrodiil and were residing in the Imperial City in an apartment my Aunt Serene still owns. How no one grew suspicious of a tenant that's been residing there for two hundred years was beyond me, but somehow they didn't.

"Well…what's wrong with her?" Cassie asked irritably. One of the many things that I admired about Fennorian was that he always ignored Cassie's rudeness. I have no idea where this mer found this level of patience, but I need it! "Despite the obvious signs of frostbite and strangulation, she's in a bit of shock from well everything. It's a perfectly natural and understandable response. She did just lose her home and for the first time killed someone." Fennorian reminded Cassie.

"So there's nothing else wrong?" She asked. Fennorian just shook his head and reassuringly pat my head. There was a soft knock on the door and we all looked to see Aunt Serene looking a bit unsure. "Sorry to interrupt, is it alright if I speak with Serena alone?" She asked. Fennorian nodded and Cassie glanced over at me then back at Aunt Serene then nodded. "Your mess anyways," Cassie grumbled. My eyebrows furrowed at the statement as Aunt Serene shot Cassie a warning look as she left the room.

How is all of this Aunt Serene's mess?

Fennorian walked over to my aunt and looked at her unsure. She gave him a reassuring smile, which seemed to be enough for him to leave the room, closing the door behind him. My aunt sighed heavily and walked over to me. "May I?" She asked as she pointed to the open seat next to me on the bed. I scooted over more so there would be more room for her, and she sat down. She fiddled with her thumbs a bit and looked over at me. "I have no idea how you are truly feeling from all the events that have occurred today, but I do know you must be deeply troubled." She commented. I nodded woodenly and looked at her.

"Do you know why those men attacked my home and wanted to kill me?" I asked her. She sighed heavily and ran her hands through her dark brown curls. "Honestly, Serena, it could have been multiple things. The fact you're a half-vampire and maybe someone spread word there is a half-vampire, though again since they were cultists that shouldn't have bothered them. So it could be the fact I did foil Molag Bal's plans many years ago." She admitted. I blinked and looked at her in shock. "You were the Vestige?!" I asked in shock.

She grimaced and nodded. "Those were dark days, Serena, but yes." She admitted. Something about her theory about it's because she is the famous Vestige didn't make sense since the cultists' colors were crimson red, and Molag Bal's cultists wear black. "But that doesn't make sense," I mumbled.

"I should have told you about this sooner, I'm sorry-" "No it's not that Aunt Serene, these cultists were in crimson red robes…not black, and according to Nan just two cultists were attacking the castle." I interrupted. Aunt Serene's eyebrows furrowed at this news. "Maybe I don't know after all like I thought I did." She mumbled. "But what are we going to do now?" I asked. "You should be safe in the Imperial City with Cassie and Nan. Though you should really learn the local language if you're going to stay in the city." She added. I blinked and looked at her confused. "Where will we stay and where will you go?" I asked her. "I'll stay here to assist Cassie and Nan in teaching you everything you want to learn and I feel you need to learn. Fennorian and I already talked it over." She told me. I nodded woodenly. "Starting next week we'll start your language lessons, I can't keep you cooped up in this apartment all your life because you speak only Old Bretic." She grumbled.

"Does everyone else know about the fact we'll be staying here?" I asked. She nodded. "And will they need language lessons as well?" I asked. She grimaced and shook her head. "I'm sorry, Sweetheart...you're the only one here that doesn't speak this language you need to learn." She apologized. I blinked a little and stared at her in shock. "What do you mean I'm the only one?" I asked her in shock. "You're the only one, Serena. I'm sorry. You can thank your uncle for that." She told me. I cursed under my breath and sighed heavily.

I have a feeling I'm gonna hate learning a new language.
