Chapter Seven: The Deadlands

"Faen!" I hissed under my breath as another gust of cold wind hit me as I held one of the blankets that we grabbed from the priory before heading out closer to me. We were nowhere near Bruma and already the Jerral Mountains had greeted us with their icy cold winds. "Serena, are you alright over there?" Martin asked as he looked over his shoulder the best he could.

Unfortunately, since there were only three horses at the stables at the priory I had to pick one of the three men to ride with, and since I'm pretty sure Jauffre is a little in shock from my choice language that left the two men I have been traveling with. Espen was out of his damn mind I swear, so I didn't feel comfortable being on the same horse as him which only left me with having to ride with Martin.

I was fine with that since he seemed to be the only person that hasn't pissed me off or gotten on my nerves yet.

"Just cold," I assured him. You would think since I was half vampire I would not be all that bothered with the cold, but I was. "I offered my cloak to you a few times now." He reminded me. "And I still have the blanket." I argued stubbornly. I clung to Martin so I wouldn't fall off as suddenly the horses started panicking. I heard a familiar sound of a scamp screeching. "Everyone duck!" I warned, and if as on cue a ball of fire shot over our heads. "What in oblivion?!" Jauffre gasped in shock as we dismounted from the horses.

"Looks like we attracted some attention to us." Martin commented as he readied his spells. I quickly drew my bow and released an arrow at the scamp. I resheathed my bow and drew my sword since there was no way I was going to be able to keep up with fighting back the daedra. I was good with my bow, but I wasn't good when surrounded by enemies good. "No shit." I hissed as more daedra came towards us. I felt my blood run cold the moment I spotted a spider daedra and groaned. Aunt Serene warned me of those things, and how much she hated them.

"What is that?!" Espen demanded. "Something that should be killed…quickly!" I added as I grabbed Martin and pushed him away from the line of fire of the shock bolt it was sending this way. Everyone was very expressive that Martin was supposed to be kept safe for some reason, so since I'm the closest one to him I guess I'll have to play protector. "Noted, and I'm starting to be more grateful I did hire you!" Espen called out to me as he charged for the spider daedra. "Your gratitude is very lacking since you haven't paid me yet!" I hissed as I thrust my sword into a dremora churl that tried to attack me from the side.

"You know I can fight as well?" Martin reminded me as he sent a bolt of lightning to a mage dremora that was getting ready to summon probably more daedra. "I'm well aware of that, Martin, let's focus on the daedra and we can bicker on the way up the mountain about this." I hissed. After killing a few daedra I noticed more were starting to come, which didn't make sense. Is someone summoning these things or opened some portal or something?

"Where are these things coming from?" I hissed as I blocked an attack from a dremora Kynval. I gritted my teeth as he tried to break my block with all of his strength. "Serena, come with me! I know where they're coming from!" Espen called. I huffed and glanced over at Martin then back at Espen. "I'm a little busy here!" I hissed. A katana pierced through the dremora's chest and I sighed in relief as he was sent back to Oblivion to reveal Jauffre was the one who helped me dispatch the dremora. "Go with the Hero of Kvatch, I'll make sure Martin is safe." He informed me.

The hero of what now?!

Too many questions, not enough time right now to get answers.

I ran after Espen as he led me to a gate of Oblivion. "We need to get inside and destroy the sigil stone." He explained. "What goes inside as in stepping into Oblivion?!" I demanded. I yelped as he shoved me through the portal. I managed to brace myself with my hands to stop me from landing face-first only to discover the ground was extremely hot. I jumped up onto my feet and looked around to see the sky was crimson red and there was lava everywhere.

"Welcome to the Deadlands." Espen announced behind me. I looked over at him in shock and then back at the plane of oblivion I was in. I was in Oblivion, if Aunt Serene found out about this she might have a heart attack which would be quite something considering she is a vampire. "Follow me and stay close. I know it's very shocking we're here, but we do need to get the sigil stone destroyed so the daedra can stop attacking us." He told me as clapped my back.

I readied my bow and followed him through the fiery wasteland. "When were you going to tell me you were the Hero of Kvatch?" I asked as we crossed what seemed like a bridge of a river of lava. "You didn't know?" He asked, genuinely surprised by this information. I spotted a clannfear and knocked an arrow. I released it and watched to make sure it penetrated through its tough scales to see it did and had managed to lodge itself in the clannfear chest, killing it. "No, I didn't know. This may come as a shock to you, but the Imperial City gossip hasn't given much information about the Hero of Kvatch." I explained.

He nodded and pointed to a tall tower. "That's our target. The sigil stone has to be in it. The last time I went through a gate of oblivion it was the tallest tower." He informed me. "So if it's not in there I can push you off the tower?" I asked, already dreading the number of stairs I would have to climb. "I mean you could try, but it will be pointless."
