AN- I probably hinted it a bit too much, so this chapter probably won't be that interesting. But if you didn't, get ready to find out a part of the truth. I didn't initially have this chapter in the story, I finished the story and then added this in so there may be some mistakes. And yes, I probably should've posted this weeks ago, but life got super chaotic.
OA was still sitting outside. He didn't know how long he'd been there, and didn't particularly care.
He was looking at a picture on his phone. More like, he couldn't stop looking at it. Analyzing it. At least it gave him something to do.
It was a picture of Maggie. What bothered him about it was that it was the picture on her ID. She looked professional, her face hiding any and all emotion. He hated the picture, but it was the only one he had of her. He knew how much she had hated her picture being taken, so after her death a few weeks ago, when he'd asked around for one, this was the only one he managed to get ahold of. Nobody in the bureau had another one.
He didn't know how to contact her family. Besides, he wasn't sure he could even face them. He blamed himself for what had happened, after all. He couldn't bring himself to do it.
The stars were hidden by the city lights, but he could clearly see the full moon.
"Mags, I'm so sorry." He whispered to the sky. "I miss you. Six weeks ago, I couldn't imagine my life without you." And now…
If only he hadn't been so preoccupied with his own minor injury. If only he'd been on that rooftop when Harraway had shot her. He could've stopped it.
He waited. Even he didn't know what he was waiting for. A sign, maybe? A sign she could hear him? Whatever it was, it didn't come.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
She stepped out of the cabin, and closed the door carefully behind her. She knew Morgan had headed down the driveway, and out of her sight, to take a call, but she still didn't want her to know what she was doing.
She lay down in the grass, wincing as pain twinged in her chest.
The stars were so bright from here. She never got to see them in the city. Part of this made her miss the city, and her old life. But, she'd return soon. As soon as she started feeling like herself again. She would feel like herself again, right?
Her gaze met the full moon. This was probably a stupid idea, but, maybe it would give her some closure.
"Hey, OA." She whispered. "I miss you. I don't feel like myself without you by my side. I…I don't know who I am anymore." She admitted. She still couldn't hear Morgan, so she felt safe confessing her troubles to the sky.
"I'm so sorry. This is all my fault." She said, her voice breaking. A tear escaped her right eye. She made no effort to wipe it away.
If only she hadn't given into her anger. If only she'd stayed with him, and let Harraway get away. Then, he wouldn't have bled out. Then, he'd still be alive.
She was quiet after that, just staring at the sky. Reflecting.
"Maggie?"
She sat up so suddenly pain flashed through her chest and she gasped.
"Sorry!" Morgan said quickly, and then turned on her phone's flashlight.
"The stars were just so…pretty tonight." Maggie stammered, rubbing her chest, which was still throbbing. Morgan's face softened.
"I know you were talking to OA."
Maggie sighed. There was no point in denying it. "I miss him." She said quietly.
"You need closure." Morgan said.
"Yeah. But there's no way to get it, even if I did get cleared for duty."
"On the record, yes." Morgan said, and then pulled out a holstered gun, and a badge.
"Where did you get those?!" Maggie asked, almost excited as she took them from Morgan. Her badge. Her gun. Just holding them made her feel more like herself. She winced again at the movement.
"It doesn't matter. Look, if you need closure to be able to move on, that can be arranged." She noticed Maggie's wince and then added; "do you want painkillers?"
"No. I've gotten through this entire ordeal without them. I'm not caving now." For reasons she hadn't told Morgan. But, she hadn't questioned it. Maggie tried to pull her thoughts away from her decision to not take painkillers, despite Morgan's constant asking, and spoke again.
"What do you mean? About the…getting closure?"
"I mean, let's investigate. Off the record. The bureau's coming up with nothing. The news has stopped reporting the story, that always means the case is going cold. The person who shot your partner is dead, yes, but the person who ordered the hit is still out there. And they're going to slip away if we don't do something."
Maggie liked the idea, and almost scolded herself for it. She really shouldn't be doing this. But..it was so tempting.
Morgan knelt in the grass beside her. "This—" Morgan tapped the badge—"can get us into almost anywhere."
"Let's do it." Maggie said, having not at all though through the potential consequences. Her desire for revenge was growing into a roaring fire at Morgan's words.
Morgan smiled. "Ok, then. Let's make them pay for what they did to your partner."
AN- for the record, I would never in a million years kill off Maggie. It will be explained in later chapters how she got to this point.
