Jacob arrived at Emily and Sam's house and saw the usual amount of action around the house. The guys were play fighting the in front yard and Emily was inside the house making food and Sam was with her.
He walked straight to the front door and accepted the pushing and shoving and greetings that he got from the guys outside, but he was on a mission.
"Where have you been, man? We haven't seen you in days. How's the girlfriend?" Paul poked. Jacob gave him a look of chagrin and continued inside. He was ready to get this conversation overwith.
"Jacob!" Emily's greetings always made him feel so welcome and like a part of a family. That's really what it was: a family. Sam and the pack were Jacob's brothers and he was theirs.
"Emily." Jacob smiled.
"Please, sit. Eat." Emily was loading the table with a large platter of meat biscuits and hashbrowns. It was a little late in the day for breakfast, but it had been hours since he'd eaten pizza with Bella and he was starving. Jacob began loading a plate with food and sucking his fingers clean of the remnants of the food before he dug in.
Sam sat down across from Jacob and started doing the same thing. "How's Bella?" He jumped right to his point, as usual for Sam.
"She's better, but not herself." Jacob answered.
"I'm glad she's better. I'm not sorry about what happened to that guy, but I'm sorry that she has to deal with the pain of losing someone that she cared about." Sam was always so honest and straightforward.
"I feel the same way." Jacob and Sam chewed in silence for a while. "I got her out of the house today for the first time in weeks." He smiled slightly at the memory of earlier. "But she misses her mom."
"She hasn't been home in a long time, makes sense."
This was it. Jacob jumped right to the point. "Yeah, she wants to make the trip, but won't go without me, so I offered to accmopany her."
"Jacob--" Sam sighed deeply. "We need you here. You've already been gone a lot in the last few weeks."
"Sam, I kind of lost her too." Jacob dropped his gaze. "Not in the same way, but she's not my--she's not the Bella we all know and love. And I think this will really help her. And it's only for a few days." Jacob stopped when he realized he was rambling. He glanced up and saw that Sam's jaw was set and he was staring off into the distance behind Jacob.
"The red haired one is still out there, Jacob, and we--"
"Actually..." Jacob interrupted him. "Bella pointed something out earlier today." Sam turned his gaze back to Jacob now listening intently.
"She was only here because she was after Bella, and that was only because the bloodsucker had killed her mate." Jacob said the last word with a sort of disgust. "But now, he's dead and she has no need to try and hurt him anymore. Bella doesn't think she will continue pursuit when she finds out."
"Hmm." Sam looked down at his plate in deep thought. "Interesting, but how do we tell her?"
"Well, I don't know but we--"
"We could have Bella tell her." Sam was still thinking out loud.
"What--you mean use her as bait?" Jacob was rigid in his chair. An involuntary anger was building.
"Not as bait, Jacob." Sam looked at him again. "We won't need to kill her if she will leave peacefully. And Bella is the only one she will listen to."
"No, Sam. That's too dangerous. Even if we were there, if it came to a fight--"
"I wasn't asking. Do you think she'd be up for it?" He put all of Jacob's feelings aside as usual.
"It doesn't matter, I won't let her do it!" Jacob's anger was building even more. "She already has a death wish, you think it's a good idea to put her in danger?"
"A death wish?" Sam was confused.
"She jumped from the cliff off First Beach, Sam. By herself. During a storm."
Sam was shaken by the new information. The look on his face also revealed some confusion.
"She said she could see him, like a vision or something, when she did something dangerous." Jacob shook his head. "She was trying to see him, but she almost killed herself to do it."
"Deathbed visions?" Sam almost whipsered.
"What?" Jacob spat.
"Deathbed visions. Our ancients told stories of them but only with those who had a natural connection to the afterlife."
"That's morbid." Jacob pushed his half-eaten plate away."
"Jacob, it just means that the vampire was destined to die long before she jumped."
Jacob thought about it for a minute in silence. She's blaming herself, but maybe she had nothing to do with it at all. Jacob vowed to do some research about it later.
"It still doesn't change how dangerous it would be to put her out there with the redhead." Jacob changed the subject back.
"So you have another suggestion I assume?" Sam looked at Jacob with amusement in his eyes.
Jacob sighed, "No."
"Well, if we can get the read haired one to leave, I'll encourage the trip with Bella to see her mom."
"It's in Florida." Jacob smiled because he thought it might change things.
Sam's jaw hardened again. But nevertheless he said, "So be it."
Jacob was flabbergasted that Sam agreed so easily. Well, not exactly easily. He still had to put Bella in danger again and he did not ever want to do that again.
Just this one last time, Jacob. He told himself. One more time and she would be free of the souless bloodsuckers once and for all. That's worth it, right?
